Hey Jake. I did some test. If you want to have the best dynamic range with this camera, you really have to consider shooting in V Log. This gives you maybe one stop more of dynamic range. I don't use it on the GH5. Switching to Cine D and playing around with the contrast and master pedestal level + 10 (for more details in the shadows) gives me enough space to work with. I saw some footage of Sony's hybrid cameras on TH-cam or black magic pocket. They have a higher dynamic range than the GH5 if that is very important to you. Or go full frame with Panasonic S5, S5m2. I stick with the GH5 m43 system. These sensors are getting better. Soon Panasonic will announce the G9m2 m43 camera. I will wait and watch some reviews when it's out. I'm excited too see how these camera's perform.

Thank you a lot! Panasonic has amazing picture profiles. They have a cinema camera that is approved for Netflix that has the same size sensor. So in the GH5 they created this looks and made it very user friendly. Every picture profile are unique. Standat and Natural look's good straight out of camera. but if you like to deep dive in color grading start using cine D to creat your own look. But most of the times I have to be honest, I messed up my whole footage trying to color grade too much. Awesome video... Amzing grading. I currently own a G7. Looking to upgrade to either g9 or gh5... This seems like the best upgrade options. Thanks again.
Thank you! The G7 has an amazing image quality I love it! I was thinking about to get one as a second camera. But if you think to upgrade, why don't wait a little bit longer and get the G9 ii straight? You will just need the body cause you can use ur lenses from the G7. It will have the best image stabilisation, and autofocus. But also I think you can only shoot in 10bit therefore you'll need a powerful computer to edit the footage too. What do you think? :) I JUST HAVE TO CORRECT MYSELF AND EDIT THINS COMMENT: THE G9 M2 IS STILL CAPABLE TO SHOOT IN 8BIT ALSO! AFFTER I DID SOME RESEARCH ON THE PANASONIC WEBSITE! PLEASE RESEARCH YOURSELF TOO ON THE PANASONIC WEBSITE.
@@kenslyder That makes sense. I think I will wait a bit. I really want to stick with m43 for now because of my tight budget. I hope the price will be favourable. What PC specs would you recommend for editing 10 bit footage. I currently run a Ryzen 5 3600, 32gb ram and a GTX1070 gpu.
@@JMXCzw alright I did some research. Because I'm editing my 4k 10bit footage on a MacBook2.4 GHz 8-Core Intel Core i9. Graphics: AMD Radeon Pro 5500M 8 GB Memory: 32 GB 2667 MHz DDR4 It has some struggles if I don't let him time to render the footage while I'm editing. But it's not a big problem for my workflow if I give it some time. If I would edit it in proxy files, things would be more smoothly. In your case: The Risen 5 3600 and 32gb ram must be good. I'm not sure about the GTX1070 gpu. My tip: If you know someone who has a camera capable to shoot 4K 10bit. try to get some footage and try to edit it on your computer and you'll see. If that doesn't work at all, try to import the files as PROXY and then try to edit it that way, It should work on my opinion, but I'm not sure. Otherwise the G9 or GH5 is still a very great option in my opinion. I love to shoot with the m43 system. You should definitely try to download the Panasonic Image app for your smart device. I have a video about that. You will be able to focus manually and automatic remotely. And it does many other things, like changing shutter speed, iso, aperture. You can set your white balance all from your smart phone or tablet. I think it works with the G7 too. I use the Panasonic Image app almost all the time paired with the GH5. With the GH5 you can shoot in 4K 8bit and it's very affordable for editing even in 60p with no crop
@@JMXCzw I just went trough the Panasonic web site and there is an option for the G9 m2 to shoot in 25,00 p, 100 Mbit/s (4:2:0 8-bit LongGOP) (H.264/MPEG-4 AVC, AAC). And some others 8bit options. Sorry my mistake! It's better you watch trough the Panasonic web site yourself to make it sure. I heard from a TH-camr that it only shoot 10bit but it seems it can shoot in 8bit too
i really wanted to get something like s5mk2 or a7s3. but you are right, i barely even did anything with my gh5 yet why upgrade, it wont make me that much better, maybe only 10-20 percent. should definietly master the techniques first and everything else before upgrading. but i currently only have 15mm f1.7 and 35 t.1.5 prime. do you reccomend more versitile lens like 12 60 or 12 25? f2.8 is scary
Thanks for the comment. The GH5 was a game changer in 2017 and it's still a very versatile camera in 2023. You own very good lenses an I would definitely master the GH5 before upgrading. Starting to make content and making the best out of the camera. Onde you really master the GH5 you will love it and there will be more newer cameras in the future. So while mastering the GH5 you are waiting for even better cameras. Maybe they will drop soon a GH7 or so. But if you think you want to change to full frame go for it. Same here. Before I started my channel, the S5m2 came out. And I thought I have to get this camera before starting a TH-cam channel but than I would have to buy all lenses for full frame new again as well . So I thought why not starting using the GH5 more and start making content while learning more about this camera and making the best out of it?! At the and of the day it's always the end result what matters. You can give a GH5 to a pro video Shooter and an S5M2 to a beginner. Who do you think will make the better videos? That's why I think you should keep the GH5 and instead to invest money for a new camera you should invest your time on you skills and lighting e.t.c and remember while you shooting and the time passes there will always be newer cameras coming out. For instance, I'm more excited when Panasonic drops a GH7 maybe soon. Don't wait making content. Start with you GH5 and make the best out of it. My opinion:) oh and yes you already have 18mm and 35mm you should go for an 50mm more or less more zoom There are some cheap options like the Panasonic 42.5mm 1.7 or Sigma 56mm 1.4. It's a bit more expensive by 400dollars or go for an 12-60mm
@@kenslyder yea I kinda hate prime lenses though as good as they are. but to get better I think I'll go for 12-60 to always have that focal length range. thx
I´ve shot movies on - T2i, GH4, BM pocket OG, BMCC, Sony a6300, Sony a7s, URSA, RED,................it really never mattered at all. It all came down to story, audio, good production...that´s it.
The GH5 was really a game changer in 2017, the IBIS is still better than FF cameras, even better than the S5II. The AF is not great but the GH6 is most of the time worse depending on the lens. The only advantage is the improved colors. Even the details in video are worse. So I totally understand why the GH5 is still loved so much.
Correctly. Yes it was a game changer. Coming from Nikon at the time I wasn't sure if going for Sony or Panasonic. Man I don't regret it that the GH5 became the one. Still loving it today.
@@MrSTravelQuest ☺Thank you mister! At the moment my favourite lens is the Sigma 56mm f/1.4. do to the focal length and f stop, I get very beautiful portraits with a beautiful shallow depth of field and image compression. It is very sharp and the autofocus works pretty good paired with the GH5. It also changes the look pretty much in colours and contrast. Skins looks very clean almost like you were shooting on a Canon. What's yours favourite lens?
@@kenslyder I see you re a sigma fan...I recently sold the 30 mm 1.4, and still have the 16 1.4, the 60 mm 2.8, and the sigma 17-50 2.8 and sigma 10-20 for my Nikon... I Also have like 12 more lenses...maybe we can talk about micro 4 3 lenses
I think you didn’t get the point of the video.. There will always be a better camera. even better than the gh5s.. The point is not what camera you use but more about learning the skills with the camera you use. there are other things that matters more like correct lighting, exposure, audio, etc.. about learning the skills of filmmaking etc.. framing, composition, what focal length to use in different situations, storytelling and more
GH5 is legendary, however, I prefer the GH5II even more. Being able to charge the battery via USB-C alone is big enough advantage, 4K60 10 bit, plus the low - light is significantly better… Also, it has a newer processor which means it is upgradeable thru firmware, whereas the original one has reach it’s cap… 🤔
You're right 😂. I try to do the best I can with it. I made some videos on how I made it work as good as possible. And I have a playlist with GH5 tutorials. It also depends a lot on what lens you use. Some lens react better in focus than others. And if you plan to operate your camera remotely, there is a fantastic app from Panasonic. (Panasonic Image app) it helps with focusing a lot. I don't know if you know these tricks like half pressing the shutter button to grab focus etc. You can also switch the camera in manual focus but still you can focussing on things just by tabbing on your display or remotely trough the Panasonic image app. my videos about that is in the Playlist if you want to check it out. Great I'm happy to see that so many people still love their GH5 like I do. Enjoy it as long it works 😅 after 6 years fortunately I hade no issues with it.
Disagree. Get good gear so you remove the obstacles preventing you from becoming a better videographer faster. It's like saying, you're gonna be a great driver no matter what car you drive as long as you just practice. If you practice with a good car, you're gonna be a better driver faster than with a car that has a bad clutch. I wish I had a camera with a decent autofocus. I'd have saved so much time and prevented a lot of motivation drain from failed recordings if I had a better camera than my GH5. I still made great looking videos, just took me longer and more frustration to get it. I will always trade time for money. Losing time is gaining frustration and getting rid of frustration and winning time is worth the extra money
I think you missed some of my other videos trying to explain what really matters. Its clearly, if you have a better camera you can make better films but if you don't know a lot about skills like lighting etc.. the best camera in the world will not make you a better film maker. This is the point of my videos. And if you are really serious making films for Netflix or bigger productions then most of the times you are gonna need rent and not buying cameras like an ARRI Alexa. And guess what. These big cinema cameras doesn't come with a continuous autofocus most of the times, and there is always a 2. camera operator pulling focus remotely. I have made some autofocus tips and tricks for the GH5 also where I'm using autofocus remotely. So for first improve your skills with smaller cameras before moving to the next camera. Makes sense? Thanks for your comment :)
The GH5 is a great camera. It's made me rich beyond my wildest dreams as I've been shooting videos for major brands with it since 2017. I've not upgraded because I love it.
@@PVMMAC "unstoppable for Iceland" for IcelandAir was the first commercial shot with it. People need to stop making excuses. The GH5 can be made to look as good as any camera with enough preparation and commitment. I prefer it over my BMPCC 6k Cinema camera.
I heard from a TH-camr that it only shoot 10bit but it seems it can shoot in 8bit too
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
i really wanted to get something like s5mk2 or a7s3. but you are right, i barely even did anything with my gh5 yet why upgrade, it wont make me that much better, maybe only 10-20 percent. should definietly master the techniques first and everything else before upgrading. but i currently only have 15mm f1.7 and 35 t.1.5 prime. do you reccomend more versitile lens like 12 60 or 12 25? f2.8 is scary
Awesome to hear that from someone with a lot of experience! Thank you so much for your comment!
@@kenslyder Most people from the field could barely distinguish cameras...sometimes someone could point out the T2i, but between the others....never.
I don’t have gh5, but I have gx80. And it is still amazing camera
The gx80 has a very cinematic look as well I like it a lot!
Gh5 will always be the bench mark. It's one that got Canon and Sony to up there game. I have one and will never get rid of it
me too :)
I love my GH5! I even bought a GH5S.
I'm impressed how many people are still in love with these cameras. And I completely understand it. =)
@@kenslyder I love mine, I’ve shot wedding, quinces and social media content for small businesses. I love that I can’t shoot handheld with it too.
WoW I just saw your channel and subscribed. Wonderful work!@@MrSTravelQuest
@@kenslyder I appreciate it, love your GH5 content. Keep up the amazing work. What’s your favorite lens?
@@MrSTravelQuest ☺Thank you mister! At the moment my favourite lens is the Sigma 56mm f/1.4. do to the focal length and f stop, I get very beautiful portraits with a beautiful shallow depth of field and image compression. It is very sharp and the autofocus works pretty good paired with the GH5. It also changes the look pretty much in colours and contrast. Skins looks very clean almost like you were shooting on a Canon. What's yours favourite lens?
Which do you use for editing??( Color grading)
What what do you use in terms of software?? (Any luts ?? ) Please teach us
hello. I'm using Final Cut Pro X on Mac
@@dosabwinja No I don't use lut's ☺ If you practice color grading yourself, you'll get better over time
You are more than a pro
@@dosabwinja Bro thank you very much 🙏
What lenses do you use with the gh5?
In this video mostly with the Sigma 56mm 1.4 But also Sigma 30mm 1.4 Sigma 16mm 1.4, Panasonic 25mm 1.7, Leica 12-60mm 2.8
Of course we can talk about it.. I'm also going to make a new video talking more about m43 lenses soon :)
You should definitely get a GH5s. 8000 iso is very clean. So for events, it absolutely DEMOLISHES the GH5. SOME upgrades do matter.
That is your opinion and that's ok
I think you didn’t get the point of the video.. There will always be a better camera. even better than the gh5s.. The point is not what camera you use but more about learning the skills with the camera you use. there are other things that matters more like correct lighting, exposure, audio, etc.. about learning the skills of filmmaking etc.. framing, composition, what focal length to use in different situations, storytelling and more
0:59 I bet, you know what is Toneh !!😂
Not exactly I researched on Google. Has it to do with the camera conspiracies videos on TH-cam? This guy is a genius 😂
@@kenslyder Yup. CC guy coined the word… !!
@@rcmanoj Ahahaha yes now I know thank you 😂
GH5 is legendary, however, I prefer the GH5II even more. Being able to charge the battery via USB-C alone is big enough advantage, 4K60 10 bit, plus the low - light is significantly better… Also, it has a newer processor which means it is upgradeable thru firmware, whereas the original one has reach it’s cap…
🤔
thanks for the comment :) I'm exited for the GH7
I mean this is true, but also fighting the autofocus is not the best experience :D
but I like my gh5 :D
ahahhaahah just saw the end. exactly. loved it
You're right 😂.

@@Obsolete569 awesome comment 😍😍😍🔥🔥🙌🙌🙌 thanks for the reply!
@@Obsolete569awesome!! Congrats! Any footage that can be shared? Would love to see it
@@PVMMAC "unstoppable for Iceland" for IcelandAir was the first commercial shot with it. People need to stop making excuses. The GH5 can be made to look as good as any camera with enough preparation and commitment. I prefer it over my BMPCC 6k Cinema camera.
The commercial was made a month after the camera was released in April 2017 and broadcast in May of that year.
This isn't the whole truth - pros shoot indoor events they can't bring lights to all the time
depending to the situation
If gear doesnt matter go do with iphone
We are talking about cameras here, not phone
