LUMIX GH7 in lowlight
Tonight I shot a video in lowlight conditions with the Panasonic LUMIX GH7 and that video today made me rethink if I really need to switch to a full frame camera anytime soon or not. I mean, the lowlight performance and shallow depth of field that I got with the GH7 was insane paired with the Sigma lens 30mm f/1.4. Later in the night I called a friend to shoot a short music video and here is the end result. Please comment for any tips ideas or questions :)

Like a movie. So good!!! 💯
Great Video! You can get some stunning low light video if you play with the settings. I have seen a lot of people complaining about the LL performance...........compared to Full Frame. 1. The sensor size is 2 times smaller but still packs in almost 25 MP. I will gladly trade size and lens weight for a smaller sensor size. Plus you can get all the full size lenses with just a simple adapter. Honestly this looks like a movie trailer for a network Television movie. Way to work with the camera. I love the 4/3 format because what you see is what you want to put out. You don't have to worry about cropping in compared to a FF as it is already cropped.
This is fantastic great job brother
Looks great. People just have to learn how to work with the camera they have in their hands. If you know your camera, you can get a lot of excellent footage out of it. People complain about noise in their footage. But, if you look back to the 1960's and 70's, movies had a ton of grain (like noise) in the footage. But, no one complained back then. With DaVinci Resolve, you can reduce the chroma noise and you're left with something that could pass as film grain. Either way, there are tools available to suit your vision. I worked at IMAX converting movies to the IMAX format. There were many times, including one of the Mission Impossible movies, where we cleaned up the footage for IMAX and then added grain back to the image based on the director's instructions. So, while people often complain about noise, there is always a way to give your footage a film like look with grain. It just depends on what look you're going for.
@@AllThingsFilm1 I agree on that! Fortunately I was born in the 80s and I grew up with those movies 🍿 Grain is something I never complain about. quite the opposite I like it. I like the texture it makes it feel film like, and less digital. I’m glad to have you here with you years of experience! Thanks for commenting!

Loved these images and short scenes... those natural colors complimented the look of the environment and were pleasing to look at. My favorite shot speaking as a cinematographer was the section were you walked towards camera and stayed in focus, yet maintained that shallow depth of field... I'm suspecting (like myself...) you are a solo filmmaker (?) and relied on the camera to track you ? With my GH5s and SLR Majic cine lenses I have to setup my shots with a pre-determined blocking to make sure I'm in focus and inframe... proving to be a challenge but when I get the shot I love iit.
@@NEFKANO Awesome! Thank you so much for the comment 🙏 Yes the GH7 autofocus is fantastic at tracking (not always) though. Yes I did everything myself with a tripod.
Lovely imagery once again! You are clearly able to get amazing images and scenery out of the GH7. Even with a micro four thirds sensor, you capture very nice bokeh and depth of field.
@@AllThingsFilm1 thank you so much! I used the Sigma 56mm 1.4 on purpose to get the best amount of shallow depth of field on M43. But I realized that it’s not enough for me in some situations. I will definitely switch over to Full Frame this or the next year :) Thanks for watching

OK Ken , you have convinced me ha ha , the GH7 can look as good as the GH6 and so i will hold off on the gh6 , this video alone will lower the price of many other cameras , that's the creamiest analog like image i have ever seen out of the MFT and beats most full framers baring the S5 mark one chuckle , but sadly the S5 has to crop for 60p 4k and has worse R Shutter than MFT and that auto focus on this GH7 is well good enough and any of the S5 cams have no access to all the lovely low weight MFT lenses either , so wow , looks like i wont be going full frame . cheers 😎🤠👍🤓😳💯⬆😌awesome !
@@minorrhoads5318 👋 hey thanks again! You’ve mentioned the Rolling Shutter. Thats true in the S5ii it’s worse but I have to be honest. I miss a little bit more shallow depth of field when I’m on a farer distance from the camera.. My fastest autofocus prime lenses are at f/1.4 on M43. I’ve seen a video from one guy that used an f/1.4 on a FF camera and the results were shocking beautiful! Imagine that scenario were your standing so far away from the camera that you can see the whole body and still have a nice background separation 😍 It’s very hard to get that on M43 unfortunately. The fastest lens for M43 is an f/0.95 but it has no autofocus and still it is equivalent to a f/1.9 on FF
@@kenslyder yes your right it is harder to get that bokeh at a distance , in good light it sometimes works out well with compression bokeh on my 100/400 , also i was tracking a horse riding person with the 75mm 1.8 and it worked out well bokeh wise because even though they were 50 feet from me , the back ground scenery was much further so it looked great , i have the the F 1.2 /42.5mm and its bokeh is gorgeous , but yes it still has the same issue as the 56mm 1.4 , so sometimes it all works out great , but yes full frame does do that better , swings and roundabouts especially if you are a low light shooter who want perfect bokeh , i would keep the GH7 , and may be get the S5 & the light weight L MOUNT 85mm 1.8 which would be f/0.9 of mft and that has auto focus and THAT S5 is lighter than the GH5 ha ha , but i used to think have more lenses would help a lot , but finding good content is more important really , so really you already have it sorted as most people would be more than happy with your filmic image , but i do understand the the desire for that look . cheers 🤓👍🦉
@@minorrhoads5318 I agree with you. Hollywood standard aperture is at 2.8 aperture anyways for most of the times. On FF. So It’s ok really having at least some f1.4 lenses for M43. It’s just about finessing some shots where you want to be a little more artistic where you want something faster. So yes I will continue using the GH7 for sure until I might get a newer FF camera someday when I have the money 😅🎞️ Thanks and It’s great chatting with you about cinematography! you have a very good knowledge 😉👍
@@kenslyder I agree , that finesse and artistic look is wonderful to get , and thanks for the compliment ,you likewise , and yes i also one day would get a full frame when i can afford one but still keep my GH5/G9 , but get rid of stuff i rarely use any more , yes i always enjoy your reply's and chats with other viewers too . thanks , i did get Panasonic's for video because of how good people got the gh2 to look with its hacks back in the day , but i ended up liking photos too ha ha and as much as i really enjoy making videos , i can say without question you are definitely more talented as a film maker than me and i am enjoying the journey you are on , have a great rest of autumn and winter filming 😊Ken 👍
@@minorrhoads5318 Thank you! Very kind of you 😌 Have a great autumn and magical winter too 🎞️🎨
This is a huge improvement in colour and low light performance using the GH7. This is not even 5.7K pro res raw which will yield even better results. Well done
@@T2JUDGEMENTDAY-rl2xi Thank you buddy 😌🙌
@@kenslyder how do you feel about the GH7 now?
@@T2JUDGEMENTDAY-rl2xi well it’s much better and more enjoyable than the GH5 but to be honest if I could go back I might would wait a little longer and go for Full Frame just because of the better shallow depth of field.
@@kenslyder yeah but you can get lens that can give you the same dof as full frame for eg 0.95 voighlander
@@T2JUDGEMENTDAY-rl2xi yes but unfortunately those lenses have no autofocus. You can get M43 lenses from Olympus at 1.2 with autofocus but it’s still an equivalent to 2.4 in full frame. And when I think there are lenses for full frame at 1.4, there is a big difference. Maybe M43 will announce new lenses with autofocus at least a 0.95 will see. Now I keep the GH7 as long I can. It’s an affordable camera overall. I own 3 Sigma lenses for this system at 1.4 and it gives a nice background separation but it’s still can’t compete with what a FF camera could do. Of course it’s not necessarily for filmmaking. The M43 is good enough
Wow. Looks fantastic. One of my favourite videos now
