    To name the first guitar player in Sweet it was Gorden Fairminer. He stayed in for about 3 weeks. The 2nd was Frank Thophy, he was in for about 6 months he was followed up Mick Steward. Mick Steward even wrote some songs which were recorded on the B-side. Allthough those first 3 singles wasn't the band that play on the A-side Such as "Slow Motion", LolliPop Man" and "All you ever get From Me" but they had a bit off radio succes, Mick Steward left. Then Andy Scott steped in. And to use Andy's words, the rest is history.
    Those 3 single's were pré recorded and the writers were looking wich voice suits the best.

    Amazing segment. I grew up listening to lots of Sweet music including the deep tracks, I still do. I had no idea about Ronnie James Dio potentially replacing Brian. I think the band made the correct decision in not pursuing that direction. It would have been interesting however Dio was too associated with early Rainbow and ELF.

    Loved the interview so far, so insightful. At first thoughts Ronnie replacing Brian is laughable, it seems a mismatch, and don’t get me wrong I have most Sweet’s and Rainbow,s and Dio’s music, and seen singers both live. After further thought, think the heaviness of No You Don’t, most of the Give Us A Wink album, I think Ronnie would have taken that to the next level. Eg Remember when Bon died and Brian Johnson took over. We’ll never known, nor should we.

    Trivia note: When Brian Connolly brought the song "Jeannie" (B-side of "Poppa Joe") to the other members of :Sweet", the other guys thought that Brian had written it. Actually, Roger Glover (Then a flat-mate of Brian's) had written it. Glover seemingly didn't care that it was credited to "Connolly/Priest/Scott/Tucker"

    • @AlexAlexon3897
      @AlexAlexon3897 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Not sure it would have worked. Dio in a band that harmonised? With his extraordinarily powerful vocals i don't think he would have accepted it. But at least the band would have rediscovered their 'heaviness'. So i think Andy was wrong and of course Brian was the focal / vocal point and when he was booted out the band lost a vital part of their imagery.

    Andy did an extensive interview some years ago, talking about how life had turned horrible in the mid-eighties. The Sweet got hit with a huge tax bill something like a million pounds after they broke up. By mid nineteen eighty-five, Andy had found himself living in a bedsit in London on the dole. Now that took a $ load of guts to reveal this, as I grew up on the dole as a kid as well, no great memories I can assure you. And Andy just looked around and thought hey I can only go up from here, and he did. You don't always know how these guys feel? so imagine being a former rock god, traveling the world, with tons of money and women, and then your in a bedsit by yourself, applying for social services. ANDY IS A TRUE ROCK SURVIVOR

    • @vbassone
      @vbassone 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@thorstenkehde3453 The problem lies in how the word "original" is being redefined in this context, and this happens very often now. The word"original" means the beginning, or the first.

    • @vbassone
      @vbassone 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Amongst musicians nowadays, it seems that being part of the original lineup somehow means you were part of the "best" lineup. The "original" lineup should simply and only mean the FIRST lineup. Being in the FIRST lineup doesn't necessarily mean one was in the BEST version of the group. Sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't There are MANY examples of bands where the original lineup did not produce the music that went on to being considered their best work. In some cases the first lineup did produce what is considered largely to be the superior work in a band's career. The point is; "original" should not be in anyway an indication of QUALITY, it simply should mean what the word means, the FIRST.

    NOOOO!! COMPLETELY WRONG! "Original" means only one thing; you were there in the BEGINNING of the band, not in some subsequent lineup. Is this clear now? This burns me up. People need to look up the definition of the word "original" in the DICTIONARY, and not REINVENT or broaden the scope of what "original" actually means. NO, David Gilmour was ABSOLUTELY NOT an ORIGINAL member of Pink Floyd, although he was in the best version of PF, nor was Ian Gillan an ORIGINAL member of Deep Purple. YOU were not an ORIGINAL member of Sweet. Now having straightened that out I hope, the "original" lineup of a band should NOT imply BETTER or BEST version of a band either. In many cases yes, the original lineup was the strongest and most creative period of a given band but, there are MANY MANY instances where a subsequent lineup, not the ORIGINAL lineup, was superior. If you weren't in the band in the BEGINNING, or at least the beginning of the RECORDED and DOCUMENTED history of a band, you are not an ORIGINAL member. Done!

    It was said that Andy, had recorded the album in a higher key than Brian could sing in, so he struggled and believed he couldn’t manage any more, and they were able to get rid of him. It was said to be the most creative sabotage in music history. Scott had been jealous of Brian for years before this, and used Brian’s drinking against him. Karma came and boy him on the backside, as The Sweet never had another hit record, and split up a couple of years later.

      Yeah, the band was never the same after they booted Brian out. Sadly they lost their way without Brian and Brian was completely lost without them.
      They definitely needed each other..

    Dio surely would not have fitted Sweet, I for one sure is glad it did not happen, never been a fan of Dio´s singing style, lyrics or stage antics.

      They were friends with Ian G & Roger Glover (Brian shared a flat with him for a time) & they were on the same circuit in the early days. Van Halen were newer kids on the block & took a lot of influence from British rock bands like Deep Purple, Sweet etc.
