Being in Gen Z, it has always bugged me how people follow trends online like literal sheep. But whenever I try bringing it up with other people my age, they never seem to think it's as big of a problem as I do. Thanks for pointing that out.

I’m Italian (NOT) Italian-american), and i feel like mafia shouldn’t be glamourised too much. My parents know people whose lives were ruined by mafia. Where i live, everyone knows somebody who knows somebody, if you get what i mean. It’s very close to some people’s lives, and it’s ruined my country and rotten not only it’s politics but also it’s soil to the core. There’s a place in italy, “la terra dei fuochi”, that is not safe to cultivate due to how much illegal waste-dumping was done by the mafia there. I feel like it should not be glamourised, as it kills men, women, kids, countries.

I live in Rockford, IL, which has a large Italian presence. It's amazing (and pathetic), on how many people still cling to that persona. It's like cool, way to glorify your criminal behavior and then simultaneously complain that the world is going to shit. People need to look in the mirror and see what they caused

i started to adopt some characteristics of the clean girl era bc it appeared at a time where i finally wanted to get my life together, i've started taking more care of myself and getting more organised for college, being careful with what i eat and looking more presentable since image is important in the business world. i don't really care what type of products they use, it's the overall meaning of getting ur act together that drew me into it. in a way i'm thankful bc at the beginning it really gave me inspiration to keep going.

All the time, you see girls pretty much get swept off their feet with social media trends. It’s such a ridiculous and childish look at the least, but it can also be very tragic in a number of ways. I haven’t seen the full video but all I’m gonna say is I’ve been a clean girl at my core since 2019 and really found my style in 2020. I still do love simple pops of colour paired with neutral items. But I’ve never been a fan of overly done make up and sleek back hair suits me and it’s practical. My wardrobe is full of more classic pieces that I can mix and match and won’t have to update very often unless I find an item I’m missing. I loved seeing the trend on socials because I was finding outfit, hair and makeup inspo I could do using items I have. I kinda hate how it became mainstream and a trend when it’s just about being more natural and classical as opposed to using consumerism to say you need these items to be cool. Idc what trend comes next I’ll always be a clean girl because it’s what makes me feel like well me.

The way you described wearing your Mom’s fur coat is EXACTLY how I view and others SHOULD view trends. They are meant for more options, fun and inspiration…add on’s, to try new stuff and so on. They are not and never were meant to create a WHOLE lifestyle around and or put yourself in a box. The obsession with building your entire life into one aesthetic is mind boggling to me….With that being said there are people who are genuinely geared towards one style which is fine if it’s a genuine interest but even than it’s a collection of different stuff throughout the years and it’s because they truly like it and are naturally drawn to it. They don’t throw away all their stuff because social media told them to and then buy all new belongings to fit into the new style. It’s the follow the leader mentality and not being able to think for yourself, not even knowing who you are or what you truly like is what scares me the most about all of this. YIKES 😬

When I was a teen in the 90s-00s, u picked a certain type of style u identified with & u stuck it’s it. But because it was who u are. Music, lifestyle & firend groups obviously played a huge part. If u dared stray, be prepared to be shunned by ur friends. For my group of friends it was Alternative/Grunge.
But young people these days have NO IDEA who they are!! They’re this one week, that the next. They have no clue about music, only what’s playing or trending on Tik Tok. It’s sad & strange.

I used to own a clothing store and when I went to the trade shows to buy for next season I always wondered how all the companies were on the same page telling me what was going to be popular next season. How do they know what is going to be popular? Then I realized that the fashion industry are changing the trends every year to make people buy new clothes and they are making a new fashion or trend popular by telling every store what to buy and putting celebrities into the new fashions, so you see celebrities wearing the stuff that all the stores are stocking now. It works better on women than men... If I had last years women's clothing they would all know that it wasn't the right colour or style for this year, but I could sell 2 year old men's clothing and they would buy it as long as they thought it looked cool.
Most people don't buy clothes out of necessity cuz their old clothes wore out, they buy for fashion so they don't get left behind, and they throw their old clothes out. Planned obsolescence. But there are only so many trends so the old ones come back again one day (retro) so I just wear 20 year old clothes and I'm usually just ahead of the "new" fashion.

However, it's part of the nostalgia we feel while we are growing up. The world is weird, and I'm glad we have these weird, random trends. It keeps things lighthearted. Im 25 years old and never really followed trends.
My mom was a huge influence on me as a teen because she always gave me perspective on trends and how some of the things suggested would be out of fashion in little to no time. She always says I should buy stuff I really like rather than jumping into trends. She's taught me how to regulate my impulse purchasing tendency.
I only once fell into "buying because it's trendy". Around 2010-2012, I bought neon colored clothes because I thought they were trendy. When they went out of fashion I couldn't even look at those clothes because I truly didn't like them. I was in my preteen/young teen years, but it was then that I realized the power advertisements, trends and celebrities had to make us think something that I honestly found icky could be flattering or fashionable. I now thank my mom for all those clothes she wouldn't let me wear because she thought they were inappropriate or tasteless. She had the wisdom I lacked back then.
I think teens are especially at risk of falling into trends and into a splurging lifestyle because they are learning to connect with the world and are much more susceptible to influence. I see it with my cousin who's a teen and is always trying to be "in style." She struggles with impulse purchasing at such a young age. I think it is very important to have a good relationship with your own style so that you can buy clothes you feel comfortable and confident with.
I now laugh at the TikTok trends and aesthetics because they are ever-changing and sometimes it's hilarious how far apart one style is from another. Here in Argentina, people are raving about Coquette Girl aesthetic. Last year, clean girl was everything, and a couple of years back, the motorcycle-leather-all black aesthetic was everything. Maybe it's because it's summer, but the "mob wife" aesthetic did not reach us yet.
I don't know if it'll help anyone (it certainly has helped me) but the best advice I heard for people who don't know what clothes to buy (like the people more likely to impulsively jump into any trend TikTok suggests) is to:
    - pay attention to those things you like about your appearance and how to emphasize them through your clothes.
    - ask yourself what you want your image to convey.
    - find your basic, timeless pieces.
    - buy good quality clothes that will last a lifetime (or more). I have clothes that belonged to my mother or grandmothers and they are in really good conditions mainly because the textiles are good (think 100% of one textile). Maybe they are more expensive, but in the long run, it pays off because you buy much less clothes than if you follow trends.
    - Find your neutral colors (colors you like to wear and how they combine with each other).
    - Don't impulse buy (go to the shopping and walk around). Think about what you really need in your wardrobe.
I truly think people who always jump into trends don't have good quality, long lasting, timeless clothes that correspond to their style. Because when I started doing this with my clothes (I am still doing it), it became much easier to realize what I truly like in fashion.

Personally I love the combination of old money and coquettte because I love elegance and beauty (and pink), but I enjoy the "clean girl" aesthetic for its focus on skincare and fitness. I generally don’t move with the trends though haha
I just hope all these girls find their fit and stay there. It seems like they are searching for their style and haven't quite found what feels right for them yet. There's no harm in trying different styles out, but maybe they should be doing it in a way that involves less consumerism :)

So I guess someone should push the "comfortable girl" trend. That one I'd go for for the girls in my life. Brett, you should be the one to lead it.

All these women need to do is freaking relax yeah, and be cool. This junk is such a ridiculous and vain look, and tons of people instantly judge you. Women who behave this way are immediately moved into a separate, unserious classification.

I did like the clean girl aesthetic just because i like not having to do a million steps in my makeup routine lol but the whole buying house stuff and completely purging everything that isn't clean girl was insane! Just like i liked minimalism cause im lazy and would rather have simple stuff and multipurpose items but the extreme was just that, extreme! It's insane how easily swayed people's identities can be just by a simple trend.

I remember finally getting to pick my own clothes as a teenager. I went with the “jeans and a t-shirt” look. I have stuck with that ever since, for decades now. It has never been top of the fashion tier, but it has never gone out of style. Solid color shirts, rare is a design or logo. I went with pocketed t’s at first but realized I never used the pocket, so why have it? Oh, I have khakis and some button-ups, black and black slacks for my funeral attire, but yeah - jeans and a t-shirt. It just works.

I'm also all about jeans and a tshirt, but I love t shirts from vacations, ones with cute pictures or silly slogans, or all of the above. Styled with no belt, the same purse every day, a coat/jacket of the right weight for the weather. I think I've aged out of caring too much about my outfits.

I’m 33 i’d love to have “the clear skin” asthetic 😂 i’m curating a “ if you wouldn’t see someone in star wars or lord of the rings or buffy the vampire slayer wearing it it’s not in my closet 😂😂😂 and some gothy-tired mom who tries to workout, do homeschool, groom my animals and clean the house, pieces. Also almost all my clothes are thrifted unless it’s underwear. I have gold tin paper stars hanging from my living room ceiling with no live plants i guess i’m not trendy

Do your own thing. Be your own person. Don't follow trends. Be an individual. You know what you actually like, do that. You want clout? You want attention? Go against the trends. Be yourself.

You're the best haha! You just made a summary of how trends take so much part of our lives. I'm french and it is the same. They literally all look the same, this is truly annoying! It seems like they have all the same personalities. They just can't embrace theirselves, it is kind of scary, btw. As a result, I decided to wear my hair natural, super fluffy and curly and i put on silver jewellery. Last year, i used to do the same hairstyle, as you show on your videos, and my hair lost so much of its strength.

I'm a millennial, born I 93 and raised as a Gen X I never cared for trends that are like this. I prefer wearing tank tops or t shirts and jeans .
Sometimes if I wanna go full out I like to dress like a rockstar that's just me and it makes me feel confident as f**ck
Other times I dress like you Brett, no makeup on just casual and chill.
Also, I absolutely love your videos and your channel, you're awesome

I am so glad I’m a guy. I have had the same leather jacket since 1995, and now my son is wearing it. Wrangler jeans and Wolverine work boots, replaced as they wear out. No trends, ever. I’ve had the same haircut for 30 years… it was even “in style” once!
