Heard somewhere (possibly here) that the COD is not part of carrier inventory .. that COD is based on land and typically only stays on carrier if maintenance is needed. Is this correct?
Rob - thank you! My father was a COD driver back in the mid-60's. After the Navy he went on to fly for Air America and then flew commercial (Saudia and Gulf Air) until his retirement in '95. I was born 6-months before his 10-year-stint in Japan was over, so I was far too young to remember any of his military time. While he loved to tell stories, it seemed to me (as a kid and young adult) that he was a very quiet man when it came to his Naval experience - he would never talk about it unless asked, and even then, it was matter of fact and he never seemed to brag or embellish (or want to accept any type of acclaim) about the amazing life he must have had. Of course, his kids grew up and we all went our separate ways to have families of our own... Not very long after my own children were born, Dad died suddenly, closing off any chance of he and I ever sitting down and talking (as adults) about his amazing career. My kids never got the chance to know their granddad, and really didn't understand just how cool he was until I showed them several of your videos. They were suitably impressed, needless to say, and in great part due to your excellent videography and narration! 💪 While watching your vids, I often find myself imagining Dad and I watching them together, and me asking something like "did your cabin door always fly open like that?" and then listening to him talk about the many stories he must have had that I was never able to hear. So again, thank you - your videos are able to bring to my boys' imagination a little bit about the life of a man they only know from a few family photos. 🤩
Thanks for walking us through the process Rob. I can see why the flight deck operations are so dangerous. This vet salutes all the flight deck personal for their service and ability to stay safe.
@@flyrobroy Rob at 1:07 you say "nose-wheel steering handle". So is there a joy-stick of sorts for this? I would have assumed you steer the nose-wheel with rudder pedals...?
@@ArtisannasitrA Yes, impossible to see in my videos, but right below the yoke on the left side, there is a literal nose wheel steering handle (joystick as you say) that allows us to use extra power to turn the nose wheel. I think the reasoning is the incredibly tight turns that are required around the flight deck would otherwise be impossible with simple rudder pedal input. Hopet hat helps!
@@flyrobroy On the other hand, he never brings anything interesting with him when he comes aboard. Almost everyone on the ship likes to see a mighty battle COD catch a wire.
@@flyrobroy I tried watching a couple of video's of Growler Jams but he just doesn't keep my attention. Your video's I binched when I found your channel

LT thank you for sharing these videos I'm a former DC who served on a couple Flattops IKE was my first and favorite ship. I used to love to watch you guys from Vulture's Row. And my repair locker I was in charge of was 7A by the crane sponson. Brings back memories of my naval career. Thank you "Sir" for carrying the torch. God Bless.
The white shirt on the left was holding on the pad eye so he doesn’t get blown over. I used to work on the flight deck as a green shirt and boy the jet blast from the F4 was experienced I will never forget. COD on the ball with mail!
I'm a retired HMC, I wish we had GoPro's or even cellphones back in my day! I flew out to a carrier on a COD enroute to my unit during the buildup for Desert Storm. I did many cool things during my time but that was one of the coolest! Today being Veteran's Day thank you and all Vet's for your service!
The amount of technology, human skills, and processes that all have to work together is just astounding. Watching the whole system (with your commentary) never fails to blow my mind.
That was great narration, and you know that by all the other commenters saying the same thing, it was informative, understandable, dumb down enough for me not to feel that it was dumb down for a novice like me. The end of the video was very well done too, exciting, tense and humorous, well done sir, i will definitely support your channel.
The question isn't so much why it has 4 verical stabs, but more of why only 3 of them are rudders...

Just damn, was blessed with a tiger cruise on the ranger in 89, pearl to diego, nothing but awesome from these young men. Had my hair singed in the crows nest up top when a tomcat went off the starboard cat, up and over the blast screen, will never forget, lucky times with a vhs and made a dvd, thank you my older brother master chief Don Hornacek, 26yr navy retired, best week of my life.
Great stuff Rob and thanks for the ride! Fascinating stuff. I flew GA years ago and come from a family of airline pilots (Cathay, Qantas etc.). Now my son is showing interest too! For shorter runways, I reckon you could add capacity (and pax thrills) by installing cats for bigger birds, such as the A380 etc. 0 to 170kts in 2 secs while sipping your French red (in a white shirt) could be just the thing! Cheers mate from Australia - Dave
With each passing year and more clips showing all the weather and the crazy environments they operate in, I'm convinced that Greyhound drivers are the hottest aviators on carriers.

It’s all about which side the Shooter is on. Here’s a video where my copilot is saluting the Shooter who’s on the right side of the plane, but I’m sitting in the left seat. Great question and thanks for subscribing! th-cam.com/video/hyGRYGP9Npc/w-d-xo.htmlsi=6yI0ulVXORkOInhy
About the guys and planes being blown around in the jet blast and just how powerful it can be; there's an episode on one of those disaster analysis shows where a plane crashed because one of it's control surfaces stopped working. The investigation led to a broken control cable that had worn out. It turned out that the plane was usually parked in a spot where it got the full brunt of other planes taking off and sitting there being shaken around violently all day simply wasn't in the design of the plane so the cables wore out before the techs could spot it.
