Usually my work is made to order (although I do have a few pieces for sale), so as soon as it's made its delivered and installed. I always need to keep a few pieces for an exhibition I do every year.

Hi James! Absolutely fascinating geology lesson!! We’re hunkering down for our first winter (FINALLY) storm here in South Central Iowa, USA. It was about 10 C here yesterday so today we started out with rain, then sleet aka wintry mix 😑 and now it’s blowing snow and drifting! Gotta love living in the Midwest!! It was a slow drive home from work this evening...35 mph tops. I enjoyed your video snuggled up under an afghan! I so want to visit Wales some day (maiden name was Thomas, so I’m a Welsh for sure!) and may just have to pop over to Scotland and take in the staggering beauty!

Hi Garry, Thank you. The slate in the video can only be split to about 5 or 6mm at the thinnest. Welsh slate can be split very thin. To about 2mm or so.

Do you find many fossils in your slate? When I was a child in Pennsylvania (USA), we used to look for fossils in the natural slate grounds around our area! Tons of fun!
Hi Donna. Not in the slate I work with. I think sometimes they're lost as the slate is formed due to the heat. I've found fossilised whale bones half way up a mountain before and ferns and fossilised trees in carboniferous sandstone but never anything in the slate I use.

Thank you. I have work in Chicago which was -40 last winter I believe and the Swiss Alps as well as pieces in the north of Scotland where it can get to minus 20 occasionally. Hottest place would be Portugal and Texas. They've all been fine. Of course there's always the option to have it cast in bronze. Your sculptures are beautiful. The iron pyrite was so unexpected for me! Please speak up a bit. Even with the volume turned all the way up it was hard to hear. Hi, yes they are usually dry stacked at first. More often than not I do fix them together later although some of them are left dry stone. They are fices using a variety of methods I've come up with myself. I prefer to leave a little mystery.

Thanks John. The pieces I'm splitting in this video are pieces of paving and walling stone. Many quarries that produce slate will generate this as a biproduct of the roofing/architectural industries.

I need to chip my slate into very thin pieces for fine sculpture. Do you have any recommendations for chipping down to 2-3 millimeters thick. I need pieces that are 2 to 3 mm thick by 25 mm long by 50 mm wide. Any suggestions?
does anybody know how one could take two or three Roofing slates and glue them one on top of another to create steppingstones for a garden so that when you stepped on the slate it wouldn't just crumble underneath your foot. You need to use felt in between each piece of slate? What kind of glue should you use? I just replaced the roof of my 125-year-old house and God bless him the roofers left me every single last piece of slate that was up on the roof.

I love your sculptures and videos. You are quite an incredible designer. It would be impossible for any of your sculptures to happen by chance (or by pretty much any of us, for that matter.) That’s what I believe about God being the Designer of our universe, earth and bodies. Just too complex and interwoven to happen by chance. No offense meant, just a thought.

You could try a powered tile cutter.

Hi James, I got it from Sheffield Steel online. For years I used a bolster. These are so much better. Hope that helps.

It's moe a geological issue than to do with any methods. I'd suggest selecting a very fine grained slate to get down to that thickness.
