I'm not a Gypsy nor a Jew. But i have an incredible respect for both communities. They protect their presence, despite all the challenges and everything ! And, this music is wonderful ! We need to tilt with respect in front of everyone, who have contributed to the creation of this music - past and present - and who continues to play this music today; without any racial or nationalistic views!
+Can Hacıoğlu «They protect their presence, despite all the challenges and everything !». That's why so many german philosophers hated them. They were an insuppressible contradiction for the civilization and state's theory. Israel today is going to change that. On one hand Israel State is like the victory of Heidegger thought. History is full of funny stuff.
My Mother's maternal Grandfather was a Klezmer fidlr. Also I came up listening to Django, among others. I truly appreciate this for what it is. Thank you so much!
Greetings everyone! Just to throw another drop in the mix: two of the tracks are clearly Bulgarian (Gankino horo and Ratcheniza), so ... enjoy! Music is a universal language and one we can all speak without words. Many thanks to the musicians who put this album together. As I see it, it celebrates humanity, to which we all belong willy-nilly, so keep it going, gentlemen. :-)
Jews were the ones who lived "globalization" on their very flesh.. Thats why i hear a Polish Shtetle and Romanian little Jewish village tunes here too. Beautiful !! Indeed celebration of Humanity
Wonderful work and quality music. Thank you for making these themes and ethic melodies public. Unlike many living in the Central-North Balcanic area I am pleased that finally this music is finding recognition. Good job. Keep it up. Bring more delight to our hearts and souls ;0)
Just to clarify the title, as some of you are having an argument about it. It's merely an album name, reflecting our repertoire which came from both traditions in the same part of the world, and putting the two words together like that is clearly unlikely/impossible in reality. So it's just a concept for an album, no more, no less.
Lassaigne jérôme I've never heard of the Yeniche (Jenische) people being 'part Jewish'. They are a W. European travelling people, not related to the Roma or the Jews. Their dialect contains some Romani and Yiddish vocabulary, through contact with those peoples - that's all.
Actually, it is not unlikely or impossible in reality! I am some of both heritages, and there are many of us out there, and this is why (written by my cousin who is a Rabbi): "One complex thing about being Romani and Jewish is that both are Diaspora peoples. And the Jewish Diaspora was in India prior to the Indian Diaspora ever happening. So some (though obviously not all) Roma not only have some Jewish DNA as well, but they have specifically Indian Jewish DNA. This proves that when India was attacked, the local Jewish population took part in the fight/exodus along with the Roma, and have been intermingling ever since then. In a word, since the Romani people have existed, there has been some kind of relationship with the Jewish people." I am thrilled to see you guys making such wonderful music, and I shared this video on my facebook page with these words: "I am of both some Romani (formerly called Gypsy; a few different vitsas/clans) and Jewish heritage, and also have an Irish great-grandfather, and study cultural anthropology and sociology, so I think this group's multi-ethnic/multi-national musicians and fusion of traditional sounds from those is wonderful! Beautiful things happen when people *appreciate* each others' cultures and share theirs with an open mind and heart!" So bless you, and keep on making the world a more beautiful place for all!
Renee Joy Many Jews with Gypsy heritage? I had a DNA test recently, l'm mostly Jewish with a tiny percent "south Asian", l am told this is probably a Roma ancestor. I was so surprised, as neither group approved of intermarriage. But I know that Gypsies traveled in Ukraine where my ancestors lived. I wish I could learn more about the relations between these groups, that's why I looked at this link.
Laura Woodswalker It may be unexpected that you personally could have Roma ancestry. But it is no surprise that people with mixed Roma and Jewish ancestry exist. The two communities may indeed have disapproved of intermarriage, but they also lived close together in Eastern Europe (and elswhere) and would have traded and worked together (Jewish and Roma musicians often played together at weddings in Hungary, Romania, Ukraine etc.) - and, as they say, 's#!t happens'. All in all, over the course of a few centuries, it probably happened quite a lot. Such couples and/or their offspring were, no doubt, often ostracised from their respective communities - at the very least, the identity of the father would have been kept *very* quiet.
I like this music, a lot, although my things is mainly the traditional Andalusian Gypsy Flamenco music and all of it's "Palos" I still like to feel the music of my ancestors, as I too have the blood of the Sephardim, Spanish & Portuguese Jews, and Gypsies, on one side, and Gallic / Celtiberian tribes on the other. I like ALL music, but I can feel this in my veins.
Loving this mix of virtuosity, tenderness, passion and utter musical craziness. I’m stepping into the broader world of central and East European music after playing a lot of klezmer and Jewish music generally. Trusting the accordion (my chosen and beloved instrument) to lead me on my journey…❤

I am Gypsy/Jew. I am Romanichall Lee on my mothers side and my grandfather told me that during our travels we had also come across Jews who like us were being persecuted. At some stage in our family history there was a marriage to a Jew. Though we stayed predominately Roma we were instructed to never forget our Jewish links. My father is a Sikhi from the Punjab. The Roma originate from here. All roads lead to the land of the five rivers

This is very likely. I am Hungarian Gypsy and Austrian Jew. Not sure why people feel this is an unlikely combo. Both were targeted by Hitler, and many relationships were born of suffering and concentration camps. I admire both lines of my heritage and am proud to carry the blood of my people.
I've listened to many recordings of klezmer-style music on YT but this one is easily the best. Awesome drive, polish, and musicality. Any musician or group to combine these qualities deserves highest praise. Well done and many thanks !
yes, the Hora here is Romanian. 'Max' was our own composition, but basically its Bulgarian. Polegnala and Gankino Horo are both Bulgarian, as is Rachenitsa. Es Brent is a Yiddish song, and as said before, Izek is a Hungarian Gypsy tune.
Jon, I think they go well together. Historically many of the musicians at Jewish weddings in pre-WW2 Eastern Europe were gypsy. There was a mutual influence musically. Giora Fiedman, who has many recordings on TH-cam, is obviously influenced by American Jazz. And has anyone heard of Stefan Grappelli? Is his music jazz, French, Gypsy? Who cares? I shouldn't be too worried. Its great music.
I only speak English, but many years ago I had a cassette tape of recordings of songs sung by the Bulgarian Women's Chorus. I don't remember any of the names of the songs, and didn't understand them then, but I recognize a song here that was also on that tape. The song starts at 12:48. Thank-you for this recording.

The river theme in Smetna's "Ma Vlast" was originally a Swedish folk song with nothing to do with Bohemia or Czechoslovakia. It was then adopted as the Israeli national anthem. Music belongs to everybody.
Orkestina, U might enjoy the sound track to the Human Resources Manger.
