Anti English Sentiment in Llanberis Tourists Speak Out

- A group of seven English women from Lancashire claim they experienced intense anti-English sentiment during a walking holiday in Llanberis, North Wales. From rude remarks on the streets to being refused service in restaurants and pubs, the women describe the hostility they faced as overwhelming. Despite the stunning landscapes of Snowdonia, their trip was overshadowed by negative encounters, leaving them vowing never to return.

Not just the English that suffer from this - even as a born and bred Welshman I've experienced this type of behaviour. It would be interesting to see what these local communities would be reduced to without tourism
They don't like South Wales folk either!
Something similar happened to my husband and i .We walked into a pub which was full of noise until we. Walked in we had a drink and left before we were shown the door .
Shocked to hear this its terrible im from south wales and you'd never experience anything like that here ,personally I'd be letting the North Wales folk what I really think of them
I am Welsh, we have a beautiful country. Unfortunately we also have the Welsh tourist prevention society. Trust me they are a minority.
I have been going to Wales for the last seventy years and never experienced anything like this I still go at least once a month for a day trip and it makes me happy the scenery the lakes the mountains the beaches the waterfalls I drive round with a big smile on my face
Such a shame when they lose money from tourism. Stupidity beyond belief

Happened to me and my fellow motorcycling mates on Anglesey about 30yrs ago - 5 of us walked into a pub, where the locals were all speaking English - as soon as they heard us speak they started speaking Welsh. One of my friends immediately commented (he was not the shy, retiring type) to the landlord "it doesnt seem very friendly in here" - to which he replied "you are free to leave at anytime".
We let him pour 5 pints....and then walked out.
😂 hahaha.... Love it. 😂😂😂
Ah - another 'story' about the Welsh reverting to their native language the moment they hear an English voice. Yeah, right. This is the same Anglesey where some 'expats' from England demanded road signs should only be in in English (they retired there and bought much cheaper properties on the island). Try that in Spain, France, Germany, etc. Are you one of those brits abroad who is ENTITLED to only your language being spoken wherever you go? When in Rome etc: don't expect the world to revolve around you, cariad😅
It beggars belief the old they spoke English but turned to Welsh when we walked in the pub shop myth is still being trotted out.
@@northwalian1970 It's not a myth.
During the UK's contribution of peace keeping around the Yugoslav conflicts, some lads from a Welsh Regt (can't remember which one now) were briefly taken captive by Serb forces. What did they do? - That's right, immediately started conversing in their mother tongue - To such an extent that their captors eventually released them.
Now how is that attitude going to encourage tourism to Bangor, Llandudno, Wrexham etc from the Balkans?
Just plain rude if you ask me.

My first wife had Welsh speaking relatives. We walked into a local shop where the two assistants were talking in English, but immediately turned to Welsh when they noticed we were 'foreigners'. Auntie Kitty then spoke to them in Welsh and they then resumed their conversation in English! Hypocrites!

Sadly there’s institutional, Welsh Assembly-led hostility to the English. Despite fewer than 18% of Welsh people speaking Welsh, all the public signage is primarily in Welsh, however I’ve rarely experienced direct prejudice. The Welsh don’t seem to care about the adverse affect all this has on their economy and on tourism.

Not surprised. Been twice many years ago and nothing but rudeness and outright agression even from older women serving in shops. Last time was about 25 years ago when I was at Uni near Liverpool. Such a shame, at the end of the day we are all British as such should enjoy each other’s company and be grateful to live in peace and freedom.
I’d prefer to say we’re all people and should enjoy each others company regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, religion, sexuality and so on. Any kind of bigotry is not a good thing. I guess I’m lucky that as an older British white guy I’ve only very rarely faced it myself, but you are absolutely right we all just need to rub along a well as we can.
My family and I had a holiday in Wales some years ago. We found that any shop or pub we entered and they were speaking English as soon as any of us spoke they would immediately revert to Welsh . We were subjected to hostility throughout the holiday.
How do you know they were speaking English before you entered? It may surprise you to learn that in Welsh speaking areas people's first language is Welsh and it is the language they would use normally. English people who buy up property in these areas and insist that everyone speaks English naturally upset the locals. There was a case of someone moving in and insisting that workmen erecting a mobile phone mast in their garden spoke English. How arrogant is that?

There's good and bad folk everywhere. In the late 70's I went to watch a car rally in mid Wales with a mate. Went into a Bank to get some cash and the only speaking Welsh started. Unfortunately for them, my friend was from Cardiff and he went nuts at them. " I've never been embarrassed in my own country before " was his shout, with a couple of swear words thrown in for good measure. We got outside after I'd been served and he burst out laughing, " I don't speak bloody Welsh either " 😂😂😂
I arrived late one night to run the Snowdonia marathon the next morning. I was tired, hungry and cold. I went in a chip shop to ask for directions to the street I was staying, no one knew the street, i later realised it was a few meters away. I left and asked another person, turns out they sent me in completely the wrong direction, leading out of the town. After my third strike I thought what a lovely bunch of people.
That's the Welsh for you, love your money but dislike you.
My old mum challenged a lot of Welsh speaking locals , inc the publicanin a pub. She understood Welsh. They were taking about all signs need to be in Welsh . She asked what language the ten pound note was in with which they had happily accepted. Of course, English. We walked out and went to almost next door run by a couple from Birmingham. Totally different approach to all customers whether Welsh, or whatever. It's all very childish
I can understand how they feel our world has changed so much .but if we maintain (when in Rome) and not dominate the places to which we travel by speech mood or demeanour or numbers or self importance .maybe we will be accepted more easily .we overwhelme not only by our numbers but in many other ways As a traveller Myself I have seen our people change over the last fourty years just my humble opinion .I find if I include the people in my travel by asking advice have conversation .comment on their home their people their country their food culture and I am welcomed with open arms I find the Welsh wonderful I have had no trouble .

It was the arse end of the Norman dynasty that built it, the English too had plenty of castles to remind them of who was in charge (and it wasn't them).
In a different part of Wales (where I live now) a shop assistant was being rude to me and part of that was speaking at me in Welsh deliberately - but I promptly spoke at her in a different language altogether (ie Danish). I only know a few phrases of it, but my looks are such I could pass as Danish. That stopped her rather in her tracks and she had to return to speaking English to me at that point.

Small town mentality. I first went to North Wales on my motorbike in the mid-70s. It was a great place to be. We made friends with some local lads, Kogs and Harvey. We had a great two weeks.
