    Awesome video! I would love to see a followup safety video. Specifically, if you are adjusting this tube while it is live, which parts of the yoke are safe to touch without getting shocked? Is there anything other than the annode itself that is dangerous to touch while the tube is plugged in?

      I once did a house call on a 35 inch RCA that had started up and then the Xray safety circuit had shut down. I discharged the Anode which went off with a big CRACKLE. Problem was it was likely 50kvolt and while it was discharged to the Dag on the tubes outside ground I believe the tube ground was charged compared to the earth ground. It was a very painfull Zap I caught off it.

    When the monitor is powered up and you mess with the yoke adjusting it can you run the risk of getting electrocuted? Is it safe and ok to mess about with the yoke when the tube is plugged in?

    Two questions. 1# Did you ever find out what the name is for the single piece purity ring you were taking about towards the very end of the video?
    #2. I adjusted my rings as best I could, but when I slid them back to the point where they were not making contact well with the tube the screen was perfect? I would assume I still need them but thought I'd ask.

    The tube on my Midway Pacman cabaret is a Wells Gardner 13" K4906.
    I was recently moving the cab and have necked the tube.
    The CR23 neck board socket is a 12 pin and wondered what other tube other than a K4906 will work if swapped.
    Will any K4900 be compatible with this yoke?
    Does the number on the yoke need to match the number on the tube??? Or is it just trial and error?
    I found a 14" tube which had the same number of pin outs on the CR23 but the tube was too big for the chassis without bending the chassis to accomodate the tube.
    If I were to tube swap will my yoke be compatible on another tube or does it have to be the same series of tube like if its a K4900 series then will the only compatible monitir for that yoke need to be either a 4901, 4902, 4903, 4904, 4905, 4906 etc etc for it to work??

    I am doing a go7 cbo
    So if the tube look the same and is the same size
    But the yoke on the new tv have a resistance of 16 and 2.5 And on the go7 is 55ish and 2.5
    I can just switch the two yoke ( put the one of the go7 on the new tube )???

  • @Jagasian

    Thanks for showing how to swap the chassis’s yoke onto a new tube. I wish there were more videos showing how to do this, versus using a yoke that was not designed for the chassis. I am planning on doing this, but worried about convergence adjustments. So more videos would help.

    Question, I use the discharge method of using the wire with the alligator clip attached to the screwdriver. The t.v. doesn't have a metal frame that arcade cabs use, where should I attach the alligator clip while discharging it?

    • @BarrySlisk
      @BarrySlisk 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The metal parts in the corners where the bolts go maybe? I think I have seen someone use the metal wiere thingey running along the tube (not the degauss).

    I've gotten this type of swap to work only comparing yoke coils of original with donor and getting pretty close. You think these guys who say you also need to measure inductance in Henries are being too critical? Without an LCR meter, I guess one could build one of those circuits with a resistor of known value and apply a power supply with known frequency and do a couple of calculations to get the Henry value. Do you think this is overkill?

  • @freshlysqueezed-r3u
    @freshlysqueezed-r3u 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hey! Great video! Just completed a swap and it looks great but I’m worried about the difference in resistance between yokes: I left the original tv yoke but it had a 10 ohm resistance for the vertical while the arcade yoke had a 12.5. Should I go back and replace it with the arcade yoke? Since it’s already working does that mean it’s fine?

    For what I think what you got, is either Emerson, Sylvania, or Symphonic (Funai) TV/VCR combo from 2000's from the curb. And I didn't know that will work for the Arcades. The Funai Picture Tube is either made in USA, Mexico, or China.

    Hi Jason, Great Video. I did a G07 tube swap last year in my Ms Pac. I used a 2002 Samsung TV/VCR combo. I had to swap the yoke as well. I got the convergence and and yoke adjusted awesome outside the cabinet. As soon as I put it in the cabinet the convergence was off and colors went all wonky. Long Story short ended up being that the tube didn't like being at any angle but normal TV orientation. No amount of Deguassing would fix it. It almost seems like the shadow mask moves when tube is rotated from normal TV orientation.. Have tried this with many tvs and they all the ones i have collected seem to do it as well. Have you had any problems like this?

    • @ArcadeJason
      @ArcadeJason  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      the original yoke measurement is 55 ohm and the would be replacement is 14ohm. i did not measure the inductance but it would force the defection circuit to draw approximately 4x more current which would damage the deflection circuit or blow a fuse

    • @ArcadeJason
      @ArcadeJason  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      the current and voltage varies per manufacturer design. deflection circuits in raster monitors have 2 voltages aprox 12v-50v and 80v-180v you can touch a live yoke as long as you don't touch the bare terminals you'll be oik

  • @JohnyTheWizKid
    @JohnyTheWizKid 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I just bought a 1976 RCA tube tv from craigslist and I want to use it for my youtube channel where I play games on it. Naturally, a modulator is what I need but I have component wires, the RGB ones. Everyone uses HDMI nowadays but I bought component wires from Retrovision HD and I want to use those. I thought of either modifying the TV just like you did with yours or find any modulator that has component input. I can't find any. So I ordered a converter box that's an AV component to composite. If that doesn't work, then the only way is to modify the tv. I know its possible and so many tell me its not. I can either have it re-wired or replace the unit inside with a different one. I just can't find any technician in my area that can do that. Would you be able to do that? Do you think you can help me with this experiment? Its an analog tv from RCA and I have the schematics... I think. Its on google.

    Hey Jason, kind of off topic but maybe you can answer this for me. I’m having a hell of a time finding a replacement 25” crt tube to swap into my Wells Gardner K7193 chassis .... it appears 25” crt’s were light enough to just hall to the dump back in the day so good luck finding one in CRAIGSLIST or Facebook buy and sell 🤦🏼‍♂️ 27” crts are much more readily available however. Can you marry a 27” tube to a chassis made for a 25” tube? Will this cause any possible damage to the chassis that you know of? Is it even possible due to Horizontal and Vertical yoke impedance marching .... do they even come close enough in ohms to do the swap? Thought I’d ask you before I bring another tube home .... my wife already wants to kill me for all the crt tubes in our garage 😂
    Thanks man,
    Adam

    Great video.. You are the "CRT whisperer!" :-) I've watched other vids, and they make it seem more complex - Never seen anyone suggest that maybe that the magnets would be OK if you leave it alone.. I have done one tube swap, but it was from one arcade monitor to another, so it was a good first try. Your video gives me confidence to do this with a TV if needed! A couple comments/questions: 1: When you lifted that tube out by the neck, I expected it to implode. I always treat those as if they'll break if breathed on too heavily. Is that really a recommended way to carry?! AND.. I dont have any vector games, but I'm always curious WHY the tubes are different on a vector game?? By the time any signals get to the tube, it's all about X/Y deflection no matter what, right?? Why can't a regular tube be hooked to a vector game? Thanks for the great info!

    Is there anything one would need to be safety concerned about while adjusting a powered up yoke/rings?

    • @BobofWOGGLE
      @BobofWOGGLE 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Steer clear of the anode cap, the neckboard, and probably the wire lugs on top of the yoke where the wires to the chassis attach and you should be fine. The yoke coils are insulated (though they may get a bit warm), and the purity rings are just magnets, they're not connected to anything electrically.
      It's best to keep one hand in your pocket (or behind your back, or otherwise well clear of the monitor) and use an isolation transformer even if the chassis doesn't necessarily need it, just to be sure you don't put any dangerous voltages across your heart.

    Hello Jason. In this excellent video you mention that xray radiation shouldn't be an issue if you use the same size tube or larger. What are the chances that a 25 inch Sharp tube would fit the neckboard of a K7191 chassis with a 19" tube? Do I even bother opening up this Sharp TV? Someone told me a tube swap would be easy with either a Sharp or RCA. So I'm kind of splicing your video with that comment from another source. If it doesn't fit then it doesn't fit and I move on but I'm more concerned with the radiation. I don't think a NeoGeo cab conversion is worth radiation poisoning. :P.

  • @allanpatterson7653

    The magnet cluster on the neck of the tube is your STATIC convergence that is for the center of the picture
    Tipping the Yoke is your DYNAMIC convergence that is for your 4 corners .
    19VJTP22 is not that big of a tube so you shouldn't go to far wrong.
    Sometimes if your contrast or picture is set too high the shadow mask can overheat and warp slightly enough to form what may look like a green egg on one side of the picture it will go away once it cools off.
    Keep magnets like in speakers away from the tube face as it will mess up the colour purity.
    The speakers in the tv itself you may notice have shields around their magnets.

      as long as the power is off and the tube is discharged you can touch anything on a ez 20. but when it is live stay away from the neck board as it has a 400v ish focus and around 90vish grid voltage also the yoke has aprox 100v so if you want to move the yoke while live touch ONLY the plastic parts

    Can you use a 20" chassis with a 19" tube

    • @ictyyz
      @ictyyz 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      From what I got the tube needs to be bigger than the high voltage values. ... ?

    • @allanpatterson7653
      @allanpatterson7653 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is close I would say Yes. There are two ways to measure size,they both measure diagonally one way is the viewable area the other is the mechanical measurement diagonal. What I found back in the day was a 32 inch had the same gun assembly as a 28 and since it had a greater area to paint with Electrons it had to run more current and either flared a color or aged prematurely. Mitsubishi 35 or RCA35 come to mind. I believe Mitsubishi tried a 40 inch tube it was very heavy the Purity and Convergence were affect by localized magnetic fields and the three color guns were prone to age quickly.

    Ok just a quick question. I failed to understand the part about the radiation. Let's say I want to use a 20" tube on a chassis that was in a 27", is it a no-no? Or will I survive with a shot of rad-away?

    • @ArcadeJason
      @ArcadeJason  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      ok you wanna know the truth lol i probably should't tell people this but.....the amount of radiation from a crt tube is small and not dangerous for a short period of time . but that being said you don't want x-ray radiation blasting you in the face for several hours either. you have PLENTY!!!! of time to adjust your high voltage to a safe level. btw a 20" tube should have around 19.5kv at the anode. also i highly doubt you would get this much exposure but the first sign of radiation sickness is a severe headache

    • @davidlescarbeau521

      if you have an hv probe there would be zero danger involved but i don't suggest doing it without a probe

      at www.jmargolin.com/xy/xymon.htm Jed says "above 25KV it starts to produce ionizing radiation, commonly known as x-rays", so I guess HV/tube mismatch isn't detrimental to one's health even in long term if it's under that voltage?

    • @ArcadeJason
      @ArcadeJason  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      it depends on tube size 25kv with a 19" will produce x-rays but 25kv on a 32'tube will not

    Iv been saving and storing19" monitors from the trash. I'm thinking about getting them all hooked up to universal chassis and sell as one unit for people who need a "plug" and play option. May do a "core charge" like they do with auto batteries and pay for the original chassis to restore those aswell.

  • @shovelhedded
    @shovelhedded 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Jason, what about yoke impedance? People always talk about checking that to compare the donor yoke with the original yoke.

    • @ArcadeJason
      @ArcadeJason  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Excellent question I have found that as long as the resistance is close enough the impedance will follow suit. But that's not always the case I have seen some monitors that require a specific ring or impedance from the yoke to even turn on. But most cases it's just a simple resistance test

    • @shovelhedded
      @shovelhedded 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Arcade Jason so, should the resistance be the same as the original or can you ignore that?

    • @ArcadeJason
      @ArcadeJason  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      same as original. many monitors and tvs use the same parts and same yoke voltages so it is very common for 2 different yokes that have the same resistance to also have the same impedance

    Can you take a medium rez chassis, yolk, etc, and swap it into say a go7?

    • @ArcadeJason
      @ArcadeJason  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      yes you can use a standard res tube with a medium res chassis and yoke. infact many medium res monitors used std res tube from the factory. but i have a suggestion for you. some early vga monitors use a compatible high res tube which look great on both std and med res chassis

    • @snooks5607
      @snooks5607 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      what about 100hz TVs, was that refresh rate just a feature of the HV circuitry? no special consideration needed if the tube is otherwise compatible?

    • @ArcadeJason
      @ArcadeJason  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      a 100hz tv is just the scan speed the hv would be the same as long as the tube fits and the yoke is close your good to go . although i would stay away from the 100hz crt wide screens of course
