Ella might be my favorite female singer of all time. There are many other amazing singers, but her voice is just so enchanting. When I saw you put out a playlist featuring her I got so excited, but I wanted to sit down and commit to listen to it rather than have it in the background so it took me a week to get to it. Thank you!
I love listening to vintage jazz before I sleep. It puts me so at ease and makes me forget anything that may have happened during the day, being just the singer and I, which is very nice. No other music has this kind of effect
The record player with a stack of various records began playing a classic by Lady Ella. I sat with my sweet tea cooling down on the coffee table. My wedding photo album open on the table as I wait for him to come back in the solarium. As I see the face of my beloved husband of now 70 years, I think back to when we were just a couple of teens back in 1942. Before he was to head off to France during WWII. I remember the day we first met. I was just a scraggly thing of 7 years and he was a string bean of 8. I had just moved into the neighborhood with my parents and older brother and sister. After a great hullabaloo over a tea party getting disrupted by a bunch of older boys, in comes this thin as a stick, raggedy looking boy ready with his baseball bat and a real mean look on his face. I knew that look wasn't aimed at me or my friends, but at the bully boys. Next thing I know, it's a massive scuffle that ends with the three boys scattering like cats on a hot street. Of course he wasn't unscathed and thankfully I knew enough about nursing to help him (with my friends) get patched up as best I could. He introduced himself proper as "Eddie" and I introduced myself as "Estella". From that day on, I swear we was inseperable! Wherever I went, he went. And when we had to separate for the night, he'd always tell me "G'night my beautiful 'Stella Star'. See you in ma dreams". And ya know what? He'd be absolutely right as I'd find myself dreaming of him often as I got older and matured. I hate to sound cliche, but I fell for him hard early on and never let that love waver or wane. I still remember the day he was being shipped out to France as probably the third most terrifying day of my life. Yet he hugged me tight. Kissed me til it seemed like oxygen felt like a suggestion than a requirement. Told me that no matter what, I'd always be on his mind and to listen to his records whenever I felt like missing him. Well that became what I did for almost 5 years amongst the letters and care packages (including one bittersweet letter telling him of his parents passing and my pa's). It took him a little longer than expected to return home, but he did return to me whole. Oh how happy I was when he showed up at the house my pa left me before he passed. Clean cut, but definitely fresh off the plane, I almost didn't recognize him at first. Yet as soon as he called out for his 'Stella Star', I knew! I won't lie and say I acted like a lady in that moment, for with the background noise of a Ella record playing, I pounced on him and proceeded to kiss him within an inch of life. Safe to say, we were married swiftly in 1952. Welcomed our first baby in 1956--followed by our next 6 in the years 1957, 59, 62, 64 and 69 (the last two being twin girl and boy). We had enough for a basketball team, but we had love amongst it all. We watched our babies grow into respectful members of society. We watched our grandbabies grow and most of them are grown now and we've just celebrated our 70th anniversary with all the kids/grand kids/great-grand kids around us. I look up from my memories and hear a song that usually got us moving around as young'ns. He surprises me by taking my hand and asking me for a dance (despite the fact that I wasn't completely healed after a nasty fall a month prior that nearly dislocated my shoulder blade). I wanted to protest, but he looked at me with such love in his eyes, that I couldn't say no. We start swaying about to the sultry tones of Ella Fitzgerald and simply soak in the everlasting moment of swaying in each other's arms. Content to just be "Eddie the Great" and "Stella Star". A pair of 90 something teenagers all over again.

I love your playlist so much, I play it while I'm doing homework; can we get a 1940s playlist?
songs playing from the radio nestled in the corner of our 1940s living room
