Good video folks. I will give some advice on stakes. In my extensive camping experience I've found that wooden stakes I made form pallet wood work the absolute best in sandy soil. I found it quite by accident, I was out of plastic stakes and I found an old pallet, I split a pallet board into long strips with pointed ends and they worked incredibly well. I found later that something called the Coefficient of Friction keeps the wood stakes from sliding out of the sand. Well just FYI for your next time you have to cope with the windy days instead of folding it up over and over. Have fun folks

I love my Clam! I cover my top with Aluminet shade cloth. It breathes but still reflects heat, creates better shade and also protects the fabric from deteriorating UV rays. You can use a longer piece that can cover the top and the sunniest side. Then just turn it when sun moves to other side.
We have the Clam Escape. It's a bit larger than yours. It has D rings on all the upper corners for more tie down options. With wind curtains attached and all tie downs being used ours withstood 40+ mph gusts coming off Lake Ontario. Though it says water resistant it has yet to let any water penetrate. Clam recommends you do not cook inside, however with a propane stove and a bit of COMMON SENSE we have had no issues. We bought ours after watching your first video and use it the same way you folks do. AN EXCELLENT PIECE OF GEAR. Ditto to Everything you said in this update. You guys are awesome.
Great review! Had the same issue with sunny days making the tent HOT. Made quick work of that problem by making what I call a "Sun-Fly" I put over the tent made out of mylar. I have a 3 minute video showing it on my channel for anyone who might be interested. My next project will be to make a side panel or two out of the same mylar to better protect the side of the tent that would get the most sun exposure. Now even in direct sun, I can enjoy the same temperature inside the tent as I would under the full shade of a tree! It's been a game changer for our camping!

Rick & Linda, We received our Clam Quik-set shelter a few weeks ago and put it to use for 4 days while camping. The flies were bad but not inside the Clam. Set up the Jackery and 100-watt folding panel and we were all set. I was able to run a 12-v desk fan and power electronics. What a great addition to our camp, thanks for the heads up.
I find that stepping on the ground flap makes it much easier to open the zipper with one hand. We usually make sure one flap is flipped to the inside so it works going in or out.
One thing we always do whenever using nail stakes, we put those artificial flowers. Helps from tripping when not thinking 😰 and when barfoot or wearing sandles.
I have one. Love it. Only problem I’ve had is in the wind even though it was tied down good the roof would collapse. Had to put a pole up in center to hold it up.

Finally someone that makes a point mentioning that this is NOT a tent, nor a shelter. Is a gazebo with walls, a good one at that but a gazebo nonetheless. I actually got the Gazelle several years ago. Love it for its intended purpose and have actually used it as a second tent with the panels but I had my regular tent pitched as well, decided the gazebo had a better view of the river and slept in it knowing my tent was ready should rain, severe cold or wind would happen, I was in the Sierras. Is also great to keep my dogs contained when I want them out of their tie outs in National Parks, my dogs although big they’re well behaved and won’t dig underneath, still this is always supervised since the mesh wouldn’t be able to stop my pit to go after coyotes and viceversa. Excellent video, full of good info. Thinking of using this as an addition to my SUV conversion. When weather is stormy or windy I can retreat inside the SUV and use the Clam when weather is better, which will be most of the time where I will be. The ease of setup and takedown makes me think this could work well. Thanks for the info! ☮️❤️😎
We love our Clam Escape, the version with all the wind panels attached. Heavier, but I can carry it by myself, and set it up by myself. We stake out the panels facing the wind, only, and occasionally a panel pops in; That tells us where to add another stake. The 12 footer is 6 1/2 feet long when closed up, so consider the length before choosing one. My brother and all his camping friends have them, various sizes; we bought on their recommendation. I have small trailer ( Casita) and this additional space makes me feel like I have a huge camp. We love it.

I solo camp in a hard-side A-Frame camper and I have the 6' Dia Traveler. I've had the wind collapse it once, so I now tie down the sides. It does get very warm inside out in the sun. It's great for keeping out the bugs. I have already had zipper problems and just have a single zipper now. I do like the magnet idea, just need to figure out how to mount them. The only damage I have experience is a bear putting his claws through the mesh siding.
Bought the other brand(Gazelle) and your review would be about my review for that one also. Live in Minnesota and for fall camping ... Set up the Gazelle and put the wind panels on it and used it as a tent ... it looked like a living room LOL as had my cooler, table, and Tent Kot set up in it. Was wonderful as also had my buddy heater (use it for ice fishing) and low temp got down to 28F NO Prob, love the room and was super easy to set up!! for warmer weather, plan on getting a small fan & a Jackery :) loved it!! Gazelle makes a very nice POP out Tent with floor that looks amazing as its very similar but water proof and easy and roomy (for a tent) Fits in the back of my Tacoma and can be set up so fast .... and get this ... Way cheaper than an over priced RV!! Yee Haw!!! Come to MN and I'll take you ice fishing 😀😉
I dont put down the walls in wind. It holds up very well as long as the stakes holding the lines are secure. Get a $20 6x8 piece of indoor/outdoor carpet to put down inside.
I left this type of Clam shelter up all year continuously for 2.5 yrs in North Carolina. I used it as my kitchen and shower/laundry area while living off grid. The roof collapsed a few times when the snow was too heavy and I shoveled it off and popped it right up. But that thing really held up impressively! I had treated it with waterproofing spray before I put it up initially and it never leaked. Despite the sun bearing down on it and every type of weather throughout those year, it only had minimal damage- a few little areas starting to rip. The color faded, the roof did get stained. It handled wind well (I had it secured with 12” lawn staples. But that would be expected.

Great review! We want a screen tent but still looking at the alternatives and less expensive. I appreciate your truthfulness about how yours has worked out. Others have told us that a fan inside the clam shelter helps a lot. We didn't use it while in Florida where we hung out during the hottest part of the day inside with Linda's sister, enjoying the coolness of the ac.
Ive bought the Clam about 4 years ago, we have used it everytime we've gone camping and hiking. We've been in big rain storms and very high winds. The Clam has held up well for us. The only issue we've had is that during prolong rains, Our Clam leaks from various places on top and from the seams. Sometimes we wake up with wet blankets. A fly for this would help out tremendously. Overall, would definitely buy another because we've used it for just about everything.
We've got the G-5 Gazelle with three panels, which don't have roll up windows. I think the package was about $220. We have the same likes and dislikes as you do with your shelter. Good video!

@@juliuscajilog9371 I camp mostly along the east coast. You absolutely do not keep a clam shell up in a hurricane or tropical storm. I purchased several very sturdy stakes of metal, but the hard plastic ones it came with are very functional. Never leave the clam shell up without stakes or it will roll away in the wind. I also have wind/rain flaps that attach to the outside. They are essential in a rainstorm as the sides of a clam shell bow out, and you want to keep everything nice and dry inside.
Yes, even after weighing down the perimeter skirting with big rocks (we didn’t use stakes), the wind took our Clam down a ravine where we were camping. We were able to retrieve it, and we were surprised at how little damage that it had sustained.
One of my roof poles poked through the stitching in a huge wind. I thought my Clam was a goner (couldn’t pop the roof up any more) but one tiny bicycle tire patch-the pre-glued kind-fixed it right up!
Like the fact that it goes up and comes down easily. I've looked at them, but have hesitated to spend the dollars yet. I have a netted shelter now, but is more difficult to erect and I really don't use it that much. We deal more with horse and deer flies than with no see-ums or mosquitoes. As always limited area to carry stuff, so you have to pick and choose what you want to haul with you. Thanks again for sharing your experiences and thoughts. Have a great week.
Great video and thanks for the advice! For hot weather (not enough shade) or rainy weather (waterfall al door), I'd suggest using a large rain fly (made of lightweight tent material - less stress on clam) and either tie it to trees etc or stake it such that it drapes over the clam and provides a front door cover (this side could be held up with tied off tent poles). I'm curious to try this myself. Also, they do make darker colored clams, which would provide more shade. Good luck!
I just re-sprayed our Clam with tent waterproofing spray. The last time I did that was when it was new 3 or 4 years ago. You're sure right about the waterfall over the door and today's rain was a good reminder of that. How about a tarp that attaches to the rear of the Clam, goes over the top and extends out the front? Just for rainy days?
@@gonagain yeah, that's what I was thinking. I've actually had to do it a couple times. First time, my ex and I were camping in WV and everything was soggy it rained so much. We had an enormous tarp (at least @12x25) and roped it from as many trees as we could. Slanted it upward from the back of the tent to out front and over the picnic table then edged over the fire ring to attempt to keep it dry and have a fire without encouraging smoke towards the tent. Second time I was camped alone in GA and just wished I could run a tarp over top enough to prop and stake it out front to create a porch. It worked somewhat - would've been better if I had tent poles and more rope. It's great you've had the clam so long! Impressive! I did more recently purchase a couple of large tarps made of tent material to keep in my "possible needs" stash - they are much more compact. Here's to several more years of your clam before recoating! :)
...my tent is a 6 person Coleman instant tent, which is @ 6+ yrs old, but not gone on lots of trips. Great tent and easy to set up, but I waterproofed it before use, too. I'd like to get a screen room.
After seeing your first video, we purchased a Venture. We have not added the waterproofing yet. Because of COVID we have only been able to use it twice, once in the rain and once in the cold weather. It preformed perfect both times. We are both in our eighties and like it for the easy setup. Good videos!
we have a small portable building like that also, no a claim shelter but a knock off. It is a pain to put up and we are talking about getting one of these, I am glad you did the update.

Great review I have a 12 x 12 with a bottom and an extra fly for the top. it’s so big I get lost in it. One thing you forgot to mention is how well-made it is . One day during a windstorm very strong winds picked it up and threw it across the yard I thought for sure it was broken but but it was so well-made it just popped right back up. One con is it so big When it’s in its case and packed up. I enjoy you guys channel

We use small auto fans that plug into the port (Cigarette lighter) to move air. We have 2 of them in our Pleasureway RV. I added on extra wire and would use them in our tent when we are tenting as well. I would think these would work great in the Clam. Many places have electricity and we take a 12 in circulating fan and extension cord to have a breeze when hot. Love the info you shared Thanks
@@gonagain right! But the real point was that if a person has never experienced western wind and they plan to camp out there be prepared for REAL WIND! And, as you recommend, don’t be timid about taking things like your shelter down. (You also get in the habit of hooking your foot under the car door...just in case!)🤠

We have a clam and we call it the club house and basically use it for the same thing , cooking ( bar and grill ) and hanging . The one we have is a bigger one and it’s unbelievable how I can set it up myself in under 5 minutes . We live in Montana also and find staking all the internal stakes plus the guy lines help keeping it not to scary at a good 30mph . As he said if you know it’s going to be Montana windy take it down . I’m surprised I do not see more of them when We’re camping . Thanks for the video Happy Trails
I got a heavy weight shower curtain to put over the top of my 6x6 Clam Traveler. Makes it much cooler inside in summer. Use large carabiners in 2 corner holes, and clip other side to the rainflys. Or use a Clam side panel on top.
If I had bought one of these, I may have kept my 16 foot Scamp. It would have given me an alternative place to hang out. When I was in Quartzite there was a fellow Scamper with a Clam & he used a 20 lb. propane tank with a fireplace for some heat, it worked great. Thanks for the review.
We have the escape, enjoy it as extra space when we van camp. Only con is the roof is not waterproof in steady/ heavy rain. I just bought the Clam rain fly but have not tested it, hoping it works in steady rain. Ive used a poly tarp over the roof and it is 100% waterproof then but a pain in the ass rigging a rectangle tarp over a round roof.
I'm noticing there is no floor. Around here (SW Ontario, Canada), our beaches have sand flies. Any suggestions on what to do about the sand flies? I'm retired now and hope to start traveling next year (2025) - just don't know how yet. Great video!

I have the same Clam Shelter. It came with 3 wind panels and I bought 3 more. I actually have used it as a tent several times. Of course, never in a windy scenario. I wish it had zipper doors on 2 sides. I also bought the knockoff one from Aldi's. I use that one for my dogs, lined with portable wire fencing.
Looks like a good option, a friend has the springbar leisure port and he said it's fine in 40 to 45 mph gust and stays cool in summer. Its also about $450.00 but will last forever and goes up in less than 10 minutes.
Our meals when we're traveling are usually pretty basic. However, when we're home it gets interesting. Linda is Asian, but raised around Hawaiians and Filipinos.
It is like that for a lot of people. I think the difference is that we mostly road trip, meaning we move a lot, rather than camp, so we don't take a lot of time planning meals. Thank you for watching, we appreciate it!
A 20X20 blue tarp tied up above the clam set to drain if rained on would keep the sun off as well! Now the wind is pulling out your tent pegs! Get rid of them and use the screw in deadman that they chain dogs to and your little tent will stay put 🤷🏻♂️ Good luck to y’all!!
Just back from a four-day camping trip to Perrot State Park, Wisconsin. Great time. Had the new Pavillion model...with the rain fly and the floor...was going to be my tent. I was camping alone with my Papillon , Alice. We had the Clam up in a matter of minutes...and that was my first-time setup...alone. EASY!. Then...First might...had a hail storm...some the size of golf balls. So...you know what happens if you flick your finger against the side of a tent, eh? The water on the other side is spreayed out like an atomizer. Well...the rain fly stopped the great majority of those hail ROCKS...but some the big ones made a good impact with the underlying tent roof. So...for about 10 minutes...I was misted. And it was a chilly night to begin with. But I was able to comfortably heat that tent with my bew Buddy Heater. There that one good thing...smiles. Had a great time, albeit the hail storm. First camping of the season is always a good feeling, eh? And thanks for your camping insights! Appreciated!
@@gonagain I try not to think of all the little dents to the hood of my van. Considering the ferocity of the storm...I must say...the Pavillion held up well. I am sure the rain fly was a major help there. And the floor kept all of the wet (other than the misting) out. Sure was nice to sleep in my bed at home when we got there. There's no place like home..smiles.
The bottom skirt can be used to put something heavy on it in windy weather such as rocks or your water jugs. Secures it in windy weather. Also, I have the small one and I put shower curtains on the outside instead of the ones you buy for it. My biggest issue is that it is hard to tie the door panels open. I would still buy another one only the next size up as fitting a table and even 2 people inside (one person is tight) is hard.
Hi Linda, this is the next size up and it's just right for the two of us. I also don't like the zippered screen door because it's hard to operate with one hand (the other hand is usually carrying something) and we've discussed sewing in a magnetic RV type screen door. It could even be velcroed in I think.
Hello again! Gee I dislike pounding ground stakes... Have you tried lag bolts with washers and an impact drill? Changed our lives when camping in the rocky desert! No more hammering.
Have made "some" progress about the bounce issue. When in use as an "empty" trailer, a 2000 lb. spring set should be used, not the std 3500 lb. set. One way to achieve this is to remove one, ( maybe two), of t secondary leaves in the existing 3500 lb set. To get a shock absorber effect,a torsion axle would be best, also a 2000 lb unit. I believe the broken spring had been work hardend and it failed when getting whacked by the stump. When empty,my trailer has bounced fairly high, not doing the spring set any favors. When the Harley is loaded, it handles MUCH nicer. So I'm keeping the 3500 lb set but "custom" fabrication a shock set up where the shocks are met outside the frame and attached at the bottom of the spring set u-bolts
I have a smaller Clam shelter but havent used it yet due to snowstorms in NY. Lots of good tips in this video for when I do set it up in backyard the first time or two. It will eventually be a add on for a used motorhome of some sort. Liked and subbed!
Well I put up my 6x6' Traveler Clam tent. Maybe I did something wrong but I needed my girlfriend to help by holding one pull rope. I could not pull out the walls, I had to go inside, push up the roof then push out the walls. Might be a trick to it I dont know. I do like it, keeps wind out. I plan to spend some time in it tomorrow as the weather has been mild.
Glad to hear you guys are still lovin the clam! We sold ours after about 6 months when we upgraded our electrical in the van and no longer had room for it. I just ordered another Clam Venture for our truck tent and hope it fits our new situation! Need a spot to cook like you guys and also work/workout and get away from the bugs. I contemplated the Gazelle G6 as it is a tad bit bigger than the 5 sided calm but isn't as large as the 6 sided clam. Do you ever wish your Clam was just a tad bigger?
If you guys see us copying your new set-up one of these days you deserve all the credit. We think our Clam Venture is just the right size. We use a 2'x4' folding table for cooking and have plenty of room for two comfortable chairs and legroom. Lots of room for exercising. Love your channel.
The Space Blanket idea works great But it must be on the outside, not fit in between the roof and the rods.. to reflect the sun. Place it face down on the roof (orange side up) then tape and cut to fit. Put tape at all the corners for strength for attaching -I use micro bungees-
i took my tramper to southern tennessee yesterday and it was so hot. i had put a portable ac unit in and that really didn’t help that much. how do you stay cool in some of the hot areas that you are in. need some tricks! one thing i must say about the cargo trailer is you can make it right. have rebuilt my rig about 4 times and it just gets better
We love that about our cargo trailer; it's always not done. As for staying cool....we use a spritzer often and try to take advantage of whatever shade we can find, coupled with a breeze.
Get you some tarp clamps put on flaps on the doors make you some post to hold up the flap excellent rain shelter at it the door mine flaps are attached

I use 10 inch stainless steel bolts with 2 inch washers. My battery powered drill runs them right into the ground and they never come out.
We've been doing that also lately, using 10" lag bolts, and it sure works great

Our Clam gets regular use too, for shelter from the sun, wind and bugs. Montana has so many pesky bugs!

Love it for its intended purpose and have actually used it as a second tent with the panels but I had my regular tent pitched as well, decided the gazebo had a better view of the river and slept in it knowing my tent was ready should rain, severe cold or wind would happen, I was in the Sierras. Is also great to keep my dogs contained when I want them out of their tie outs in National Parks, my dogs although big they’re well behaved and won’t dig underneath, still this is always supervised since the mesh wouldn’t be able to stop my pit to go after coyotes and viceversa. Excellent video, full of good info. Thinking of using this as an addition to my SUV conversion. When weather is stormy or windy I can retreat inside the SUV and use the Clam when weather is better, which will be most of the time where I will be. We love our Clam Escape, the version with all the wind panels attached. Heavier, but I can carry it by myself, and set it up by myself. We stake out the panels facing the wind, only, and occasionally a panel pops in; That tells us where to add another stake. The 12 footer is 6 1/2 feet long when closed up, so consider the length before choosing one. My brother and all his camping friends have them, various sizes; we bought on their recommendation. I have small trailer ( Casita) and this additional space makes me feel like I have a huge camp. We love it.

I solo camp in a hard-side A-Frame camper and I have the 6' Dia Traveler. I've had the wind collapse it once, so I now tie down the sides. It does get very warm inside out in the sun. It's great for keeping out the bugs. I have already had zipper problems and just have a single zipper now. I do like the magnet idea, just need to figure out how to mount them. The only damage I have experience is a bear putting his claws through the mesh siding.
I have the travel size but because of Covid have not had a chance to use it yet. Found this review very useful. Thank you.

Bought the other brand(Gazelle) and your review would be about my review for that one also. Live in Minnesota and for fall camping ... Set up the Gazelle and put the wind panels on it and used it as a tent ... it looked like a living room LOL as had my cooler, table, and Tent Kot set up in it. Was wonderful as also had my buddy heater (use it for ice fishing) and low temp got down to 28F NO Prob, love the room and was super easy to set up!! for warmer weather, plan on getting a small fan & a Jackery :) loved it!! Gazelle makes a very nice POP out Tent with floor that looks amazing as its very similar but water proof and easy and roomy (for a tent) Fits in the back of my Tacoma and can be set up so fast .... and get this ... Way cheaper than an over priced RV!! Yee Haw!!! Come to MN and I'll take you ice fishing 😀😉

I dont put down the walls in wind. It holds up very well as long as the stakes holding the lines are secure. Get a $20 6x8 piece of indoor/outdoor carpet to put down inside.
I agree with you that getting it staked down properly is the key to wind, up to a point because it can sure blow sometimes! I like the carpet idea.
I left this type of Clam shelter up all year continuously for 2.5 yrs in North Carolina. I used it as my kitchen and shower/laundry area while living off grid. The roof collapsed a few times when the snow was too heavy and I shoveled it off and popped it right up. But that thing really held up impressively! I had treated it with waterproofing spray before I put it up initially and it never leaked. Despite the sun bearing down on it and every type of weather throughout those year, it only had minimal damage- a few little areas starting to rip. The color faded, the roof did get stained. It handled wind well (I had it secured with 12” lawn staples. But that would be expected.
Ours is still going strong and I'm sitting in it here in the Sonoran Desert as I write this!

Others have told us that a fan inside the clam shelter helps a lot. We didn't use it while in Florida where we hung out during the hottest part of the day inside with Linda's sister, enjoying the coolness of the ac.

Ive bought the Clam about 4 years ago, we have used it everytime we've gone camping and hiking. We've been in big rain storms and very high winds. The Clam has held up well for us. The only issue we've had is that during prolong rains, Our Clam leaks from various places on top and from the seams. Sometimes we wake up with wet blankets. A fly for this would help out tremendously. Overall, would definitely buy another because we've used it for just about everything.
Hello Phillip, we sprayed the top with waterproofing and it hasn't leaked, even in heavy downpours.
We've got the G-5 Gazelle with three panels, which don't have roll up windows. I think the package was about $220. We have the same likes and dislikes as you do with your shelter.

@@juliuscajilog9371 I camp mostly along the east coast. You absolutely do not keep a clam shell up in a hurricane or tropical storm. I purchased several very sturdy stakes of metal, but the hard plastic ones it came with are very functional. Never leave the clam shell up without stakes or it will roll away in the wind. I also have wind/rain flaps that attach to the outside. They are essential in a rainstorm as the sides of a clam shell bow out, and you want to keep everything nice and dry inside.
Yes, even after weighing down the perimeter skirting with big rocks (we didn’t use stakes), the wind took our Clam down a ravine where we were camping. We were able to retrieve it, and we were surprised at how little damage that it had sustained.
They're pretty tough.
Not using the stakes is a mistake
One of my roof poles poked through the stitching in a huge wind. I thought my Clam was a goner (couldn’t pop the roof up any more) but one tiny bicycle tire patch-the pre-glued kind-fixed it right up!
Like the fact that it goes up and comes down easily. I've looked at them, but have hesitated to spend the dollars yet. I have a netted shelter now, but is more difficult to erect and I really don't use it that much. We deal more with horse and deer flies than with no see-ums or mosquitoes. As always limited area to carry stuff, so you have to pick and choose what you want to haul with you. Thanks again for sharing your experiences and thoughts. Have a great week.

Great video and thanks for the advice! For hot weather (not enough shade) or rainy weather (waterfall al door), I'd suggest using a large rain fly (made of lightweight tent material - less stress on clam) and either tie it to trees etc or stake it such that it drapes over the clam and provides a front door cover (this side could be held up with tied off tent poles). I'm curious to try this myself. Also, they do make darker colored clams, which would provide more shade. Good luck!
I just re-sprayed our Clam with tent waterproofing spray. The last time I did that was when it was new 3 or 4 years ago. You're sure right about the waterfall over the door and today's rain was a good reminder of that. How about a tarp that attaches to the rear of the Clam, goes over the top and extends out the front? Just for rainy days?
@@gonagain yeah, that's what I was thinking. I've actually had to do it a couple times.
First time, my ex and I were camping in WV and everything was soggy it rained so much. We had an enormous tarp (at least @12x25) and roped it from as many trees as we could. Slanted it upward from the back of the tent to out front and over the picnic table then edged over the fire ring to attempt to keep it dry and have a fire without encouraging smoke towards the tent.
Second time I was camped alone in GA and just wished I could run a tarp over top enough to prop and stake it out front to create a porch. It worked somewhat - would've been better if I had tent poles and more rope.
It's great you've had the clam so long! Impressive! I did more recently purchase a couple of large tarps made of tent material to keep in my "possible needs" stash - they are much more compact. Here's to several more years of your clam before recoating! :)
...my tent is a 6 person Coleman instant tent, which is @ 6+ yrs old, but not gone on lots of trips. Great tent and easy to set up, but I waterproofed it before use, too. I'd like to get a screen room.

After seeing your first video, we purchased a Venture. We have not added the waterproofing yet. Because of COVID we have only been able to use it twice, once in the rain and once in the cold weather. It preformed perfect both times. We are both in our eighties and like it for the easy setup. Good videos!
Ps: I lubricated the zipper with “zipper wax”. It zips a lot easier now.

we have a small portable building like that also, no a claim shelter but a knock off. It is a pain to put up and we are talking about getting one of these, I am glad you did the update.
This one is certainly easy to put up, and to take down in a hurry if necessary.

With a little care they last a long time. Mine needs a serious cleaning after a couple of months in the desert.
You can also put a fan inside for the hot weather since the breeze is blocked by the screening.
They don't use much power either. Good tip.

Great review I have a 12 x 12 with a bottom and an extra fly for the top. it’s so big I get lost in it. One thing you forgot to mention is how well-made it is . One day during a windstorm very strong winds picked it up and threw it across the yard I thought for sure it was broken but but it was so well-made it just popped right back up. One con is it so big When it’s in its case and packed up. I enjoy you guys channel

We use small auto fans that plug into the port (Cigarette lighter) to move air. We have 2 of them in our Pleasureway RV. I added on extra wire and would use them in our tent when we are tenting as well. I would think these would work great in the Clam. Many places have electricity and we take a 12 in circulating fan and extension cord to have a breeze when hot. Love the info you shared Thanks

That's always a good idea, is more comfortable and parking into the wind keeps the door from flying out of your hands too.

And, as you recommend, don’t be timid about taking things like your shelter down. (You also get in the habit of hooking your foot under the car door...just in case!)🤠

We have a clam and we call it the club house and basically use it for the same thing , cooking ( bar and grill ) and hanging . The one we have is a bigger one and it’s unbelievable how I can set it up myself in under 5 minutes . We live in Montana also and find staking all the internal stakes plus the guy lines help keeping it not to scary at a good 30mph . As he said if you know it’s going to be Montana windy take it down . I’m surprised I do not see more of them when We’re camping . Thanks for the video

I got a heavy weight shower curtain to put over the top of my 6x6 Clam Traveler. Makes it much cooler inside in summer. Use large carabiners in 2 corner holes, and clip other side to the rainflys.
Or use a Clam side panel on top.
If I had bought one of these, I may have kept my 16 foot Scamp. It would have given me an alternative place to hang out. When I was in Quartzite there was a fellow Scamper with a Clam & he used a 20 lb. propane tank with a fireplace for some heat, it worked great. Thanks for the review.
That heat would be nice in the Clam. We spent most of this past January in Quartzsite and it was chilly in the mornings and evenings.
When a strong wind comes up, just unzip the windows and let the wind blow right on through. No more lift-off.

We have the escape, enjoy it as extra space when we van camp. Only con is the roof is not waterproof in steady/ heavy rain. I just bought the Clam rain fly but have not tested it, hoping it works in steady rain. Ive used a poly tarp over the roof and it is 100% waterproof then but a pain in the ass rigging a rectangle tarp over a round roof.
Hi George, did you try spraying it with waterproofing? I did that and mine doesn't leak. It did discolor it slightly, but it's not too noticeable.

I have the same Clam Shelter. It came with 3 wind panels and I bought 3 more. I actually have used it as a tent several times. Of course, never in a windy scenario. I wish it had zipper doors on 2 sides. I also bought the knockoff one from Aldi's. I use that one for my dogs, lined with portable wire fencing.
Ours gets a lot of use these days providing shelter from wind, sun rain and bugs.

That's just a 2'x4' folding table that we got from Sam's club a long time ago. It's all marked up now, but it's still going strong. Try Walmart.
The video is great, the one comment I have is the manufacturer recommends that the outer tie downs should be closer to the tent.

Looks like a good option, a friend has the springbar leisure port and he said it's fine in 40 to 45 mph gust and stays cool in summer. Its also about $450.00 but will last forever and goes up in less than 10 minutes.
We had a spring bar and it did pretty well in the wind.

Our meals when we're traveling are usually pretty basic. However, when we're home it gets interesting. Linda is Asian, but raised around Hawaiians and Filipinos.

A 20X20 blue tarp tied up above the clam set to drain if rained on would keep the sun off as well!
Now the wind is pulling out your tent pegs! Get rid of them and use the screw in deadman that they chain dogs to and your little tent will stay put 🤷🏻♂️ Good luck to y’all!!

Just back from a four-day camping trip to Perrot State Park, Wisconsin. Great time. Had the new Pavillion model...with the rain fly and the floor...was going to be my tent. I was camping alone with my Papillon , Alice. We had the Clam up in a matter of minutes...and that was my first-time setup...alone. EASY!.
Then...First might...had a hail storm...some the size of golf balls. So...you know what happens if you flick your finger against the side of a tent, eh? The water on the other side is spreayed out like an atomizer. Well...the rain fly stopped the great majority of those hail ROCKS...but some the big ones made a good impact with the underlying tent roof. So...for about 10 minutes...I was misted. And it was a chilly night to begin with. But I was able to comfortably heat that tent with my bew Buddy Heater. There that one good thing...smiles. Had a great time, albeit the hail storm.
First camping of the season is always a good feeling, eh?

@@gonagain I try not to think of all the little dents to the hood of my van. Considering the ferocity of the storm...I must say...the Pavillion held up well. I am sure the rain fly was a major help there. And the floor kept all of the wet (other than the misting) out. Sure was nice to sleep in my bed at home when we got there. There's no place like home..smiles.

The bottom skirt can be used to put something heavy on it in windy weather such as rocks or your water jugs. Secures it in windy weather. Also, I have the small one and I put shower curtains on the outside instead of the ones you buy for it. My biggest issue is that it is hard to tie the door panels open. I would still buy another one only the next size up as fitting a table and even 2 people inside (one person is tight) is hard.
Hi Linda, this is the next size up and it's just right for the two of us. I also don't like the zippered screen door because it's hard to operate with one hand (the other hand is usually carrying something) and we've discussed sewing in a magnetic RV type screen door. It could even be velcroed in I think.

Hello again! Gee I dislike pounding ground stakes... Have you tried lag bolts with washers and an impact drill? Changed our lives when camping in the rocky desert! No more hammering.
I've smacked the back of my hand so many times! I'll have to try your technique.
Have made "some" progress about the bounce issue. When in use as an "empty" trailer, a 2000 lb. spring set should be used, not the std 3500 lb. set. One way to achieve this is to remove one, ( maybe two), of t secondary leaves in the existing 3500 lb set. To get a shock absorber effect,a torsion axle would be best, also a 2000 lb unit. I believe the broken spring had been work hardend and it failed when getting whacked by the stump.
When empty,my trailer has bounced fairly high, not doing the spring set any favors. When the Harley is loaded, it handles MUCH nicer. So I'm keeping the 3500 lb set but "custom" fabrication a shock set up where the shocks are met outside the frame and attached at the bottom of the spring set u-bolts
I'm going to install some Sumo Springs or the like. I think that will protect the leafs somewhat.

Lately, here in the winter desert, it's been keeping us out of the cool breezes and warm. Gets chilly fast when the sun goes down.
I have a smaller Clam shelter but havent used it yet due to snowstorms in NY. Lots of good tips in this video for when I do set it up in backyard the first time or two. It will eventually be a add on for a used motorhome of some sort. Liked and subbed!

Well I put up my 6x6' Traveler Clam tent. Maybe I did something wrong but I needed my girlfriend to help by holding one pull rope. I could not pull out the walls, I had to go inside, push up the roof then push out the walls. Might be a trick to it I dont know. I do like it, keeps wind out. I plan to spend some time in it tomorrow as the weather has been mild.
Glad to hear you guys are still lovin the clam! We sold ours after about 6 months when we upgraded our electrical in the van and no longer had room for it. I just ordered another Clam Venture for our truck tent and hope it fits our new situation! Need a spot to cook like you guys and also work/workout and get away from the bugs. I contemplated the Gazelle G6 as it is a tad bit bigger than the 5 sided calm but isn't as large as the 6 sided clam. Do you ever wish your Clam was just a tad bigger?
If you guys see us copying your new set-up one of these days you deserve all the credit. We think our Clam Venture is just the right size. We use a 2'x4' folding table for cooking and have plenty of room for two comfortable chairs and legroom. Lots of room for exercising. Love your channel.
The Space Blanket idea works great But it must be on the outside, not fit in between the roof and the rods.. to reflect the sun. Place it face down on the roof (orange side up) then tape and cut to fit. Put tape at all the corners for strength for attaching -I use micro bungees-
i took my tramper to southern tennessee yesterday and it was so hot. i had put a portable ac unit in and that really didn’t help that much. how do you stay cool in some of the hot areas that you are in. need some tricks! one thing i must say about the cargo trailer is you can make it right. have rebuilt my rig about 4 times and it just gets better
We love that about our cargo trailer; it's always not done. As for staying cool....we use a spritzer often and try to take advantage of whatever shade we can find, coupled with a breeze.
Get you some tarp clamps put on flaps on the doors make you some post to hold up the flap excellent rain shelter at it the door mine flaps are attached
