Lots of people complain that the ud7 only comes with 4 dimms. This is an OC board and is geared towards OC enthusiasts who will never use more than 32gb of ram. Also, you can hit much higher OC with 4 sticks instead of 8 because there is less stress on the IMC. For people who want a workstation with tons of ram, there is the ud5 which has 8 dimms for that purpose.
@luigix Exactly, most motherboard manufacturers have chosen for slots per channel, but Gigabyte has chosen for slot per channel. It's not exactly new, Foxconn's Bloodrage X58 Motherboard also had only 3 DIMM Slots. For very high overclocks they use only 1 DIMM or 1 DIMM per channel for better stablility.
@Splooshiba Aha, but the board does know as soon as you power up the pc. So they could make 1 bios read out the cpu type and set it to a safe overclock.
I still maintain that top exhaust would do the VRMs better than top intake. Try it out sometime with a laser/probe thermometer. Possible tech tips maybe?
@Ptro001 Sure, not everyone will need 8 x 8GB Dimms, so they can buy boards like the UD3, or UD5 (maybe). But a "Top Tier" board like the UD7 should come with 8 so the Buyer can FEEL 'Top Tier', instead of knowing others can have more memory than them.
@Ilivemindfreak Ah, no. Quad Channel means 1 channel per slot on X79 boards with 4 DIMM slots, or 1 channel per 2 slots on X79 boards with 8 DIMM slots.
@Kurdestar why not have it? future proof it. if it's available and it's in a smaller form, why not? It'll make it so you may save yourself an upgrade in the future. I'm building a system right now and i'm going to use all 8 dims.
@Dakotify HAH, that's a funny thought. For starters, an enthusiast would realize that unless he's dealing with 4K video, chances are he isn't gonna need over 8GB of memory. Second, the more DIMMs you have, the harder it is to obtain a decent memory overclock. It raises the chances that one of the sticks isn't a decent clocker, lowering the max OC you can achieve. Try again.
This shit looks hot.... And yeah, if you do video post rendering like a lot of us do, we could be happy for the extra RAM modules. I'm currently taking way too long to render with 8 gigabytes.
-ud7hey Linus thank you for your vids. i just started to watch you and i like the way you explain things. ill be building my very first pc and ill be looking at your vids for direction and instructions.im starting with the x79-ud7 with a 3930k. wish me luck, ill be watching. keep doing what your doing.
@ShadowwwLFS yeah it works but it's not called quad channel if it's not 8 dimms the motherboard says it supports 4 channel memory architecture on gigabytes website it doesn't support quad channel memory it support's dual channel
Where is the UD3 review? :( I really like the all black layout and 4-way SLi it supports. It's also $279.00 CAD on newegg.ca, but apparently it does not overclock that well. That's if you're wanting a 5.0Ghz OC. It can run stable @ 4.5Ghz, which is nice, but I wouldn't mind a UD3 review in the feature.
I can't tell if the LGA 2011 CPUs are for me. I plan on doing a lot of high-end gaming, HD video editing and live streaming, so definitely no less than 4 cores will be acceptable.
@TheNecrocoil Of course, you should put more RAM slots on a board that is purely for overclocking since more RAM greatly reduces the overclocking ability of a CPU. Sounds good to me :)
@riotdiscoman even with 4 dims you can still get 32gigs which is more than enough for whatever you need because no x79 processor could keep up with more than that in theory. correct me if need be
Linus says to direct the top fan of a case down to cool the PWM power delivery system, but I have a question. Say you have a Corsair H100 or equivalent closed loop cooler (yes I know, not as good as a custom water loop so hush), what would I do then? I'm assuming using the rad fans to pull in air is a bad idea, though I may be wrong =p
@HennesseyHPE1000 about $400 CDN, doesn't really matter (preferably mini ITX), casually, YES, sleek. I've been doing the research and found some decent parts, but just wanted a professional opinion. But, if you have any ideas, they will be thoroughly appreciated. =]
The new ARES Memory dimms form G.Skill would look so awsome.. I would like to see a unboxing and a test drive of the ney memory from G.skill on this board.
Hey Linus, can you make a video on how to create the best all round home theatre media PC? ie best price, specs, small form factor, quiet and so on. Thanks =]
@IMPER1ALDRAGON umm interesting question. from my understanding of logic, i think it will be fine on this board but not on some cheap boards. if your motherboard can run in dual 16x mode and ur not doing any sli or crossfire than it will be fine. even if you do some kind of dual gpu config itll only drop down to 8x mode, which is still not bottlenecking the gpu at all. i personally put my revodrivex2 on a 16x slot and run a single 580 in the first slot and everything seems fine.
If a manufacterur says its is a board for overclockers and gamers. And it has 2 bios's. Why don't they set 1 bios for safe mode and set 1 already overclockt. It doens't have to be extreem, but just something to help you on your way.
Hey there, does the board require two 8pin 12v connections in order to power on? Does it require only 1 with an additional 1 as optional? Both optional? Both required? Kinda lost on why it has 2- just more stability for OC'ing?
@QuickSilverZS because they didn't think it though? lol idk. I would be ok with only 4 if it was the UD3 or 5 but come on. I expected more out of the UD7 series
Is there anywhere you can get those black crossfire bridges? Most motherboards just ship with the tacky copper coloured one, but this Gigabyte board seems to have all black connectors. Does anywhere sell those?
Why is Linus a big fan of the PS/2 mouse + keyboard combo port? Only legacy keyboard/mice use those, i would see no reason to put this on a high end board since usb is much better imo, also, you could have squeezed 2 more usb ports instead of the PS/2 port.
I think without installation disc you can not instal onboard LAN driver to download the latest drivers :D Not if you have only one working PC in same time. Sure we can DL before disassembling the old rig... The following that i call basic components of a PC. A case, PSU, M/B, CPU, RAM VGA and you are lucky if you can buy them all at once. For the new platform you must get MB CPU RAM at once.. No offense it wasnt adressed to you. Its just overall view. mydamncheapenglish.....
This is a stupid question, but why do they make Gaming motherboards for the 2011 socket when there's barley any use of them in gaming because games can't support them so well that it increases the preformance? (Please no hate on this comment I know it's a stupid question...)
@HennesseyHPE1000 I know, but I've never built a computer before (kinda ironic since I'm subscribed to a PC building channel) and I don't want to spend too much. I also don't really have a clue as to what cases, power supplies and whatnot are ideal.
Im very new to the X79 Chipsets/Board but why is this one only dual channel DDR3 memory. I know the new Intel 2011 CPU's can support up to quad channel DDR3 memory. I've seen Linus unbox boards with the quad channel but why is this one only dual?
So now we know where the LTT color scheme came from.
@npham1198 Quad channel is supported on this board. Just put in 4 dimms.
Lots of people complain that the ud7 only comes with 4 dimms. This is an OC board and is geared towards OC enthusiasts who will never use more than 32gb of ram. @riotdiscoman less dimms means less stress on memory controler whitch means higher OCs WHICH is what this board is meant for
@TalesOfWar x79 supports both quad channel and dual channel quad channel=8 dimm slots and dual channel = 4 dimm slots
@Splooshiba
Aha, but the board does know as soon as you power up the pc.
So they could make 1 bios read out the cpu type and set it to a safe overclock.

@4lla4
limitations of the cpus, they have a limited amount of lanes so only some can have 16 lanes
good to see some full size boards these days.
@Ilivemindfreak Ah, no.
Quad Channel means 1 channel per slot on X79 boards with 4 DIMM slots, or 1 channel per 2 slots on X79 boards with 8 DIMM slots.
@Raven1180 he doesnt do that because the prices are subject to lots of changes on most online stores.
Linus is far by the best unboxer on youtube.
@Kurdestar why not have it? future proof it. if it's available and it's in a smaller form, why not? It'll make it so you may save yourself an upgrade in the future. I'm building a system right now and i'm going to use all 8 dims.
@criccio quad channel=8 slots,this is dual channel=4 slots not quad channel,which most x79 should have quad channel ,some don't..
@criccio Quad Channel has 8 Dims meaning it has 8 slots. Dual channel has 4 dims or 4 slots for the memory. It's okay someone told me why already
Try again.
@LinusTechTips I believe he's referring to the 4 DIMM slots on this board, unlike some X79 boards that have 8 DIMM slots.
@lazybomb402 its an overclocking board. less ram and slots will grant you better overclocks

Which is the Best AMD prozessor motherboard in this Moment??
Realy nice video
The UD3 X79 supports Quad SLI on a ATX form factor. :)
Hey Linus, can you review their X79-UD5?
@magzire This does look awesome. Specially compared to their old baby-blue scheme. Show them some love for making them nicer atleast.
Great video as always. Linus how about letting us know the price at the end of your vids? Appreciate it.
@Dakotify true enthusiasts will not be using all the Dims, anyways. Leads to a less stable memory OC.
@kevinsmammaxd Nope..
Quad channel works with 4 DIMM slots too.
Just like dual channel works with 2 slots.
@riotdiscoman even with 4 dims you can still get 32gigs which is more than enough for whatever you need because no x79 processor could keep up with more than that in theory. correct me if need be
@Nopiw Yes, because the UD7 is "sub-par".
if i was to add a sound card to my 3 way sli system will i see better in game fps?
love the unboxings linus,keep it up!
You should watercool the mosfets or update the extreme buyers guide with the msi big bang xpower2
@kokfah thanks. didn't see that one. thanks for pointing it out.
@madoo87 If you were using a case in which everything was flipped 90 degrees (like the one linus shows off near the end) it isn't a big deal.
@luigix they did since there's not alot of people that actually need that much.
@HennesseyHPE1000 about $400 CDN, doesn't really matter (preferably mini ITX), casually, YES, sleek.
I've been doing the research and found some decent parts, but just wanted a professional opinion. But, if you have any ideas, they will be thoroughly appreciated. =]
LAGTV 'Bouse' reference at 2:47 lol. Loving it.
Linus, for little things like the vcheckpoints, would you mind adding annotations for them, so we can choose to read them or not
The new ARES Memory dimms form G.Skill would look so awsome..
I would like to see a unboxing and a test drive of the ney memory from G.skill on this board.
yeah, looking back at all the problems this board had, I am glad I went for the Asus R4E
Hey Linus, can you make a video on how to create the best all round home theatre media PC? ie best price, specs, small form factor, quiet and so on. Thanks =]
It wasn't ever on recall, the GA-X79-UD3, GA-X79-UD5, and G1.Assassin 2 were though.
@luigix when they say four channel memory they don't mean quad chanel they mean 4 dimms ^^
@luigix it means 1 dimm per channel only.
@kevinsmammaxd wat
yes it is quad channel with 4 DIMMs as well.
Start making sense, please.
man, you are crazy if you put that black and orange board into a black and green themed PC.
@LinusTechTips When do we get to see your personal rig??
@LinusTechTips I am pretty sure Quad-Channel is 8 Dimms. I checked.
Would you believe I'm still using this board in 2023? Damn good platform. Using an E5 2697
wish i can find 1...
Loving the color scheme.
This may be a stupid question, but since it is quad channel, and it only has 4 dimm slots. Are you forced to use all 4, or could you use a 2x4gb kit.
If a manufacterur says its is a board for overclockers and gamers. And it has 2 bios's. Why don't they set 1 bios for safe mode and set 1 already overclockt.
It doens't have to be extreem, but just something to help you on your way.
imo this motherboard would look so good in a 600T white with all Xigmatek white LED on orange fans.
I had no luck overclocking with the UD5, the 3D-bios is a disaster in my opinion. i hope UD7 will do better
@LinusTechTips linus when is the next part of the water cooling guide coming out
@luigix dual channels/ two seperate rams in one dimm in future? would be awesome
This is also no extreme Hiegh End Board !
Please use the ASUS RAMPAGE IV EXTREME X79 or the ASUS SABERTOOTH X79 for the Ultimate Buyers Guide.
@LinusTechTips isn't technically 2 dual channel controllers. Same on all x79 boards/Sandy E?
@Jallandhara It's quad channel. Read the first comment at the top.
@xLizm He covered a LOT of useful information in this video. I would say a 11 minute video about a motherboard isn't too bad at all! :D
Hey there, does the board require two 8pin 12v connections in order to power on? Does it require only 1 with an additional 1 as optional? Both optional? Both required? Kinda lost on why it has 2- just more stability for OC'ing?
@criccio Okay then, Like I said before I am new to the X79 chipset. Thanks for clearing that up
Whens the next range of amd graphics cards coming out? I suppose the 7000 series
@TheVladimusPrime he did review the x79-ud5
We need to see the the ASUS Rampage IV Extreme X79 OK Linus,Also the new Swiftech Apogge HD CPU WaterBlock
@QuickSilverZS because they didn't think it though? lol idk. I would be ok with only 4 if it was the UD3 or 5 but come on. I expected more out of the UD7 series
Finally Black! :P Like they have been all year.
@jenkinsjansson Hes using the G1 Assassin 2.
@RunOverFatLady no you will need a graphics card for it.
can you like water cool the whole system like everything? liqud cooling the mobo incress speed?
Hey Linus, have you thought about maybe you NEED the wifi drivers BEFORE you can download other ones from the internet? ;)
@Twohothardware Well the reason i ask is because this is closer to the assassin 1 rather than the 2
why get an xl atx board with only four dim slots when you could get a more standard style atx with an asus formula iv motherboard that has 8 dims.
2:31 for MoboFart™, you know you had it coming Linus ;)
Is there anywhere you can get those black crossfire bridges? Most motherboards just ship with the tacky copper coloured one, but this Gigabyte board seems to have all black connectors.
Does anywhere sell those?
@LinusTechTips can u plz do a 3D Bios demo ?
@xhighalert Wouldn't the memory work in RAID 0, RAID 1 would be quite useless for volatile memory.
so are you updating the ultimate build with this board then?
hey can u buy the bluetooth+wifi card sepretly somewhere? seems really useful
@BlackIceG4ming You pretty much said every single X79-UD7 can catch fire..... I'm pretty sure it was just bad luck.
It looks stealth if i compare it to my current boards (asus p4b and a p5b, those are goldish on the pcb)
Why is Linus a big fan of the PS/2 mouse + keyboard combo port? Only legacy keyboard/mice use those, i would see no reason to put this on a high end board since usb is much better imo, also, you could have squeezed 2 more usb ports instead of the PS/2 port.
Should i get x79-ud3 and 3820 with MSI 7970..will it be great for future upgrade of processor and GPU
I think without installation disc you can not instal onboard LAN driver to download the latest drivers :D
Not if you have only one working PC in same time.
@HennesseyHPE1000
1- 1200 USD
2- ATX
3- Casualty
4- yes
5- very aggressive
Tanx ^^
This is a stupid question, but why do they make Gaming motherboards for the 2011 socket when there's barley any use of them in gaming because games can't support them so well that it increases the preformance? (Please no hate on this comment I know it's a stupid question...)
why only dual channel memory they need to add quad channel so they can compensate for the price
Hail to the silent hero, the Cameraman!
@Ilivemindfreak it's more for gaming,gamers don't really need that much memory for gaming.
Does the backplate position still fit to the free space of most of the cases?
@HennesseyHPE1000 I know, but I've never built a computer before (kinda ironic since I'm subscribed to a PC building channel) and I don't want to spend too much. I also don't really have a clue as to what cases, power supplies and whatnot are ideal.
thankyou i was trying to build a comoputer with a orange color and couldnt find a mother board to go with it
Im very new to the X79 Chipsets/Board but why is this one only dual channel DDR3 memory. I know the new Intel 2011 CPU's can support up to quad channel DDR3 memory. I've seen Linus unbox boards with the quad channel but why is this one only dual?
