The Normalizer by Hornet / Auto Gain Staging - every daw should have this

  • Hornet has just released an update to a plugin called "The Normalizer" and made me do this video. The plugin is almost perfect except for the fact that it doesn't have a threshold for the analyzer. Auto Gain Staging should be an integrated part of all DAWs. Setting the right outplut volume is an easy task for a computer. But for now we have to rely on plugins. polarity-dnb.d...

Hi!! thank you very much for the nice video :) I'm going to reply to your two questions :)
    1. threshold issue: well this is a nice suggestion indeed we could probably code a relative threshold (like the one that is present in the integrated LUFS mode) that will probably solve your issue.
    2. different plugins for the same thing: i don't think those plugins are identical, keep in mind that there are a lot of different use case, I sometimes record live drums and to have a visual VU Meter it's very helpful in setting the gains with real preamp knobs (many cheap interfaces doesn't have VU meters and the software they come with only has Peak Meters, that are useless IMHO in digital recording). Also there is an historical reason, both VU Meter and LU Meter are "meters with added auto gain feature" they are not built around the auto gain concept, in fact the whole auto gain algorithm in those plugins uses the actual meter reading to tune the gain. The Normalizer instead throws away all the meter stuff and only concentrates on automatic gain control using a more refined algorithm and saves as much CPU as possible.
The AutoGain and AutoGain Pro plugins are a complete beast altogether and use an external reference (or internal in the AutoGain Pro case) but don't have any exact correlation with levels, everything inside of them is relative since the aim is to keep the plugin input as even as the reference provided, the don't even uses RMS, VU or LUFS as internal measurement, we strictly speak "voltage level" here :)
If you have more questions or suggestions let them through!

This is an excellent and useful production information video. I surely wish I had come across this sooner. It would have saved so much time but better late than never. Also, I really appreciate the technical aspect from a workflow perspective. This video definitely gave me more than a few ideas of how to approach gain staging as well as other considerations. Thank you for this "think outside of the box" information. You certainly gave the techs at Hornet something to think about.

In bitwig style, it should be a default effect: Set the desired level, measures audio over a period of time to determine the reduction of amplification level. If the gain peaks above the set level if either warns “red clipping line” or uses an automatic setting to adjust itself. The effect just needs a threshold on the low & high setting to set the active. Added a simple low and high cut would make it even more useful, this could set the focus on a specific band.

I completely agree. Something like a utility that you could drop on every track to toggle something like normalization would be great. There's a lot of basic manual tasks in mixing and audio work that would really benefit from automation. Why all EQ's don't have a normalize button to compensate for increased/decreased gain I'll never understand. Matching inputs and outputs is a common task that computers are definitely faster at. (In the case of EQ for example, the EQ knows exactly how much gain or attenuation it's applying to the signal)

Hey, thank you for this useful video! I'm totally new to audio editing. I have a single track that last about 7-10 mins. It only contains my voice, so basically I'm just talking and unfortunately during video editing I realized my voice audio level frequently goes up and down meaning I may start speaking louder or quieter. What I did before? For example I could cut my audio into many pieces just cutting fragments that either loud or quiet and then use Normalization function in my editor to adjust the volume of all tracks. But it's not perfect and takes a lot of time to cut the single track into many many small fragments. I wonder if this plugin could help to quickly make the whole track equal in audio level? Thank you!

My guess, that this "auto gain staging" is not integrated into every DAW, is because it would be a strain on computer resources. Especially if it were to be on every track automatically and have the different instances "talking" to each other a la iZotope Neutron. The admins in charge of marketing these DAWs are taking into account older computers and slower computers; not everyone has a supercharged audio production workhorse. This way the DAW companies get a larger market share.

    • @lambd01d
      @lambd01d 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Gain is just basically a single multiplication operation. It's not computationally intensive. If it's just for gain-staging, you only have to do it once. For levelling, it's per sample. You might need look-ahead too.

Hi, I think for how aggressive / creative you are with the EQ, "HoRNet CLMS" is the best option, it is designed to compensate for the perception of sound with the FX chain. It has a module that is put at the beginning, and another module that is put at the end of the chain.
Mainly it is to evaluate if the modifications made by the FX improve or not the original sound.
But from the beginning, the original sound should not be very loud, and even less if you are going to use analog emulation VST.
It is my opinion, but even if they are not used, the FX manual is rarely read, where it usually reports the range in dBVU or in dBFS recommended for audio input. So generally -18dBFS or 0dBVU is a good level. And if you want to "warm up" the FX, -16dBFS or + 2dBVU, for example with tape saturation.

i think its like gain riding. Like if you would constantly move the Volume fader up and down manualy to even out loudness jumps. Mixing engineers used to do this and some still do. In real time. Its a standard but people have stopped doing it cause it requires a lot of skill and training but today it is obsolete in most cases

Continuous auto gain staging would completely kill all dynamics and emotion in music. Take for example a piano piece, where parts of it are played very loud while other parts very soft. If auto gain staging would change this so everything is at the same level, the piano piece will become extremely boring and without emotion.
I'm sorry, but continuous auto gain staging is the worst idea ever. For certain tasks no computer will ever be able to replace a human.

    • @PolarityMusic

@@PolarityMusic A lot of music has both quiet and loud parts. You can't just make a whole piece of music all the same level, that would completely destroy the piece.
