One of the most painful moments of my life was telling an ex to call me back when he was sober and hanging up on him. Getting a call 20 minutes later from a close friend to find out he jumped from a building commiting suicide.
As hard as it may be talk to everyone as it may be the last time. Give them respect and a moment. You will regret if your last words are something that is the one last drop that sends someone over the edge that you love.

My husband tried and failed two suicide attempts because of his sexuality. I'm so happy to say we're celebrating our 7 year anniversary. All it takes is one hand to hold to offer help.
I know it's been suggested, but look up Billy's original "One Voice" from when he was a boy

Anyone living with these thoughts, please reach out to your local crisis line. And everyone, please, in your darkest moments, consider this: It's not the big things that make life worth living, but the small ones - a beautiful sunrise, or the stranger smiling at you, or a good book. And it's not the big achievements that make you a beautiful person, but the little things - the genuine smile you're giving someone who might be in a dark mood, or the meal you cook for your family, or the paper you quickly proofread for your classmate two hours before they have to hand it in.
Big things happen only once in a while, and while they're great, it should be the small things that make us content and happy, because they're far more common.

My son was hospitalized for suicide prevention at the age of eleven. As a single parent with an emotionally stunted ex, this was the worst night I have ever experienced. He continued with mental health issues on and off but we learned how to communicate and work through things. Then he found someone who he wanted to spend the rest of his life. She broke their engagement. There is nothing more terrifying for a parent than to receive a call from their child when the first words are, “I’m not okay” and they live two hours away. He has worked through the grief and after over a year and has begun dating again. This video is heart wrenching. Thank you for reacting (and the real reaction)!

I am going through this with my 9yo son right now, and I am also a single mum, though my spouse died rather than a break up. It's a pain and fear unlike anything I have ever experienced to hear my baby say that he wishes he had never been born and that he's already failed at life and should just die so no one has to bother with him.
One of my favourite things about DJ is that he's genuine, and he's not afraid to show real, genuine reactions. ❤

You called this a happy ending, but it is important to remember that it is just a beginning, as the young man would still be emotionally very unstable, and the mother will also be going through a lot both over what she went through and worrying about her son's condition. The first step is embracing life, but filling it with life-affirming thoughts and activities is an on-going process.

Billy Said in an Interview that they gave him complete control over the Video Imaging as its his Song. They also gave him the space to take the lead on this song. So Billy wanted some things to pay an homage to his original Video, IE the Gun, also the white cloth it’s wrapped in. Also the throwing of the gun into the river. This is after Billy came out as Gay in 2014. Oh and Austin the guy signing with him said his Mom told him that when he was young that he wanted to be like Billy and do what he does 😊

Not sure what you know about Billy Gilman, this is his song that came out in 2000 when he was only 12. He was the youngest male ever to make a top 40 hit in country music. The original video is a powerful one also, and his amazing voice was the same then as well. He also tried out as a contestant as an adult on the Voice (United States). Love Home Free and love Billy Gilman. Found your channel by accident, and love your channel (my daughter especially loves it because you are Aussie and you appear to be Hufflepuff possibly...lol) Love from Ohio, United States!

You can hear the emotion in their voices. Home Free did this for Suicide Prevention week which this year is September 10th through the 16th here in the US. This song always gets in the feels and I cry. Seeing you emotion in your reaction was so sad. But I know it all came from your heart.

Your reaction was spot on perfect. No need to apologize for getting emotional. I think this video was done to highlight mental health and suicide prevention. It was used to enhance the song that Billy Gillman had written, so the focus should be on the video and the message it was portraying, not the vocals. You did it right. Thank you for such a wonderful and heartfelt reaction.

Home Free released this for mental health awareness month a few years back! It broke a lot of us down with its sheer power! You never know when a simple hello, smile, or a random compliment could be the difference in a person having on long enough to receive the help they need! No one bats an eye if you break a leg and get a cast, take meds for high blood pressure, or get treatment for cancer! Mental health is just another part of your overall health that some people need help with, and I'm glad that is getting to be less taboo to talk about! There is still progress to be made, but at least there's been a start!

This is a song of hope, and talking about this topic openly is the only way to find out you are not the only one facing the struggle - as the person, the parent, the subling, the friend, or concerned other. I have witnessed the worst outcomes and happier endings. It only takes one moment to offer someone hope. No shaming, no blaming, just listen and tell them you are truly hearing them. You may be the light they needed.

This originally came out when I was in my early 30’s and at that time gun violence wasn’t so prevalent, whether it was against others or oneself. I felt the song had a good message though. Now, as the mother to a 15 year old, when I saw this remake, I sobbed!! Heaven forbid it could become MY reality but I also PRAY ON MY KNEES, it doesn’t become another parents reality!!! For parents out there, make sure you keep the lines of communication open between you and your kids! They are navigating a completely different world than we did!

Home Free has a handful of videos that will immediately make me cry. This is one. I've been there before, and so has my daughter. Even though I know the ending of the video, it is still hard to watch. Beautifully done.
Unfortunately, what a lot of people don't understand is that when you are in that place where you are seriously considering ending yourself, it is a deep, dark, nasty place that no one WANTS to go to. Usually something drives them there. It takes a particular type of person that sees the issue within themselves, knows something is wrong, and asks for help. And then, hopefully the person they reach out to knows what to do. That's what happened to my daughter and me. It's a complicated issue without an EASY solution. We can only do our best.

I have always loved this song, but right now it hits so close to home - full on ugly crying, complete with sobs, snot, all the gross stuff. My son, who is just 9 years old, has struggled with separation anxiety since he was 1, when his dad, and the trauma also affected the development of his brain's language center, which caused him to have a severe delay in his speech. He started school at 3 in a special program to help students that needed extra help for speech or occupational therapy, and he flourished, a complete social butterfly, friends with everyone. He started school on time with no problems, and while still had struggles with severe night terrors at home relating to his anxiety, you would never know it. Then came grade 3, and a teacher who took a strong dislike to my son. She constantly picked at him in class, and was even caught on camera by a volunteer yelling at him in class, telling him he was stupid and he would never be able to make it through life - because he is a math/science kid, but has zero interest in writing/journalling. Shortly after that, he started vomiting in the morning before school, had a breakdown so severe I had to take him to the hospital to be sedated, his speech is regressing. He was terrified to start school this year, the vomiting started again, and on Monday he told me he wishes he had never been born, he has already failed at life so there's no point in carrying on. I have been fighting to get him in to see someone at Mental Health about his anxiety since before Lockdown, and thankfully (sadly), I was able to get his referral fast-tracked and we have our first appointment on Tuesday. Even when I lost my husband my heart didn't break like it did hearing my 9yo baby say he thinks he's a waste of space and that everyone would be better without him. The school is giving him all the support they can while he's in their care, and I leave work early to make sure I am there to pick him up from school so that I know he doesn't have the opportunity to act on those thoughts. It's absurd how long it takes to actually be seen by those in the mental health field, though. Four years is a very long time for someone who desperately needs help, and yet that seems to be the norm these days. It is absolutely an issue that needs to be addressed, everywhere in the world.

This song had me in ugly cry mode. It’s a gorgeous song for a topic that needs people to really understand. I remember when Billy did this as a child and it was heartbreaking, but this is on a whole different level. The sheer intensity of emotion between the lyrics and the video will just melt you into a sobbing puddle. I LOVED the point you made about kids this age living in a small bubble that’s their entire world at the time. I own a business that employs mostly high school students and many times I’ve been the safe space they don’t have at home. Your comment just resonated with me. I think it’s a comment that perfectly describes the enormity of this problem and would help so many to understand where these kids are coming from. God bless you hon.

Thank you! This is a hard one, but ends well thank goodness. I am one of those mothers whose child wanted to take her life and was hospitalized 3 times. There is nothing much quite like living that way with your child. It is incredibly, incredibly painful and I feel for anyone who lives with this. Prayers for all. Billy has one of the most incredible voices! If you want to really hear a lot of his songs, pull up the songs he did on The Voice. They are just incredible! And at 10-11 he was just special (the first few lines of the video is his young voice singing this song) and he sang with country stars and on the stage a lot. Love hearing him in this and with him and Austin together -- oh man!!! Take care everyone.

I've lost family & friends to suicide and although it's never an easy subject, it's one that more people need to hear. I'm glad that Home Free has openly addressed it. Another wonderful anti-suicide song that never got enough air play was Billy Joel's song "(You're Only Human)Second Wind": th-cam.com/video/YhxjNYvJbgM/w-d-xo.htmlsi=4OACRxTZJuucD4HO.

Please also remember that suicide affects all ages especially though young people and the elderly. Society tends to overlook suicide in the elderly - it's more frequent than we realize.

This makes me cry every time, so sad! I find it hard to believe that anyone with a heard would not tear up😢! Such a difficult topic! Young kids should still not have guns! It makes me happy that Home Free is not afraid to bring up these tough topics in their beautiful music!🎶🎵
Just a little over a week ago a 13 year old shot another kid outside a mall near me, the young kid shot, I believe pretty much the same age went to the hospital and died!😢😢🤬

I worked in an ICU where we ended up with 2 teenagers as patient's in a short period. The young man was depressed and bullied and tried to kill himself with pills he got from a friend. We got him through and to help. He actually did well and was so upset he did this to his parents. The next was a young lady who took a fair amt of tylenol , maybe 14 or so, after a fight with her boyfriend, told her parents in the morning and could not figure out what the big deal was, it was "oniy tylenol". We could not get her to understand the gravity of what she did. She was desd 10 days later from liver failure from the tylenol.

Thank you for noting that there are other ways of hurting oneself. These comments have focused so much on guns. The lyrics were originally intended to comment on school violence, so guns were necessarily mentioned (it was recorded soon after one of the prominent school shootings). To pay respects to this version, the focus should be on the concept of self-harm and the reasons people might take that path.

My father took his own life when I was 7 years old and I have tried to take my life many times as well. I also know what it's like to lose a son because my 1st born son was born with a hole in his diaphragm and his origins went up into his chest crushing his left lung and pushing his heart to the right. He also had other birth defects but the hole in his chest was more then he could handle and at just 23 DAYS old I had to remove him from life support as he had turned purple and blue and his hand and feet were paler then white and SO COLD touching them hurt from the cold. I knew I had to let him go but it was the HARDEST thing I have EVER done so I can relate to this song from all angles and yes it made me cry. I now have my 2nd son (my rainbow baby) and I know he was a gift from my son to me and now I have a reason to live again.

As someone who fights mental health issues on a daily basis those words on the note very clearly capture what goes on in a person's mind when it hits hard. It is actually scary. To anyone going through this you are stronger than you know and you do have value. If nothing else by coming out the other side you can serve as an example to others going through this and help them. DJ I know you get tons of requests but one to consider is Matt Kennon's The Call. It's about the importance a single phone call can make
