People, in-universe and fans of the show talk about how Buffy was losing it over mundane annoyances, but fans tend to forget she was losing her soul. What would Buffy be like if Giles didn't consider Buffy words to be potentially true enough to do research, and she lost her soul to her roommate? When it comes to slaying I will always trust Buffy's slayer intuition (dating intuition is another matter), whether she's under a spell, in the middle of having her soul pulled from her body, or anything else slayer-related. She says Kathy is evil. I would believe it before dismissing it for her just finding Kathy an annoyance and/or being overworked. Especially in Sunnydale. Considering how long the Scoobies have lived there and what they've seen in the last three and a half years, I think them dismissing Buffy all the way until Giles tells them she's right, with them needing to have "big remorse..." that doesn't sit well with me.

TBH I think Buffy did know Kathy was a demon. Back at the start in S1 when Buffy and Giles were at the Bronze, he told her she should be able to sense a vampire in the room without having to think about it. Now Buffy joked about it by pointing out a vamp purely based on his attire, but when you consider this is meant to be a true slayer skill, it's highly likely she was sensing Kathy was a demon subconsciously and rather than becoming consciously aware of it it may her more susceptible to the little annoyances making her seem crazy.
I think they abandoned that idea, because not only is Buffy not able to tell vampires from "vibe" alone (if they're wearing their human faces and she doesn't have incriminating context clues to go on, she tends to be caught by surprise,) Kendra and Faith don't seem to have that power either (Kendra thought Buffy was a vampire because she saw her kissing Angel and she only seems to realise that Buffy isn't a vampire because Buffy doesn't bring out the fangs during their fight, and Faith can't have had this power because she accidentally staked a human.)
I think Buffy was the stopped clock telling the right time twice a day. When she had all her faculties, she showed no signs of thinking Cathy was anything more than a roommate she was having a little trouble getting used to, and when she does start saying Cathy's evil, she's lashing out at inanimate objects, blaming Cathy for things that are her own fault and getting paranoid that Cathy is _stealing her dreams._ All signs point to Buffy only thinking Cathy was a demon because she was really annoying and they were both being driven over the edge by the partial soul transfer.

Since you asked about College Dorm experiences: My cousins roommate sophomore year (who would be my roommate Junior and Senior year) built a second floor complete with carpet in their dorm. He built it by buying 5 lofts and adding plywood between the raised beds. It was incredibly sturdy too. An Offensive lineman for the school's team did pullups on it, from the beams, without it shifting or swaying even a millimeter. After that year, the school banned students from purchasing and using their own lofts as a result of his 2-story dorm room (and yes, they confirmed that they changed the policy because of him). My senior year, he had 8 computers in our dorm room (9 in total counting mine) 3 of the computers where powerful enough to play Diablo 2 on and we had Diablo 2 and Starcraft lan parties in our room Friday nights from 8pm till Saturday morning 8-10am. The dorm we lived in Senior year had what where called "pods" that were 4 bedrooms with a common living room that connected to the hallway. We were only allowed 1 fridge per 3 students so we could only have 2 total fridges for the 8 of us in 4 rooms, so we kept both fridges in the common room and declared 1 fridge to be the common fridge (anything inside was fair game) and the other fridge was the private fridge (If you didn't put it in, you didn't take it out). That system worked really well. No one violated the sanctity of the Private fridge. We'd each pool in some money and once every couple of months we'd take a trip to Walmart and buy about a dozen cases of pop to keep the common fridge stocked.
Buffy was an only child that's why she's a little bratty when she gets a roommate as she's not used to sharing a room with someone and it was easy of us audience to side with her because Kathy was pretty quirky and later slowly sucking her literal soul.
Willow said "you gonna finish this?" That's a good start...but you're supposed to wait for an answer, not make an assumption that the answer is what you want it to be! Willow might be just a little self-centered... 😂
Hi Cass, I know you were watching Angel on your Patreon, and I’m not ready to commit to that right now. But if you see a connection between the two shows, while you were watching angel, could you just give a little nod to it in your Buffy commentary? Like I know in the first episode of Angel, we see that it was Angel who called Buffy on the phone and hung up. You don’t need to give a long chat about Angel, but it would be nice to know if you’re seeing the connections/crossover storylines while just watching BtVS.
I don't think my freshman roommate showered the whole semester. He stunk. His clothes stunk. It was bad. When he was out of the room, I would spray Lysol on his bed, clothes, boots, etc. Thankfully, after one semester I was able to move dorms and get a new roommate.
My college life: I actually didn't live on campus during college. I rented a separate place with my youngest brother, who was also I college. I had gone to Bible school for two years prior to going to college, which explains why my brother and I were going there at the same time.
I just noticed recently that Parker is in a couple of Law & Order or SVU episodes. He’s not only gorgeous, but quite a good actor, in one he plays a high school senior whose been sexually abused by his adopted dad since he was 8, and he finally ends it. I don’t know if he is still acting or not but I hope so.

I’m pretty sure (though my memory may be tricking me) that “Scooby Gang started on the official posting board for the show (called “The Bronze” for obvious reasons), and that the writers picked it up from there and started using it in the show. But regardless, as others pointed out it first showed up in Season 2. (I started watching it and joined the posting board around then, which is why I may be wrong about which came first.). So it does fast predate the Scooby movies. 😂

On the 'Scooby Gang' thing - this was broacast in the early 2000s - the internet - and internet fandom was just, just starting to be 'a thing;'. - and the beginnings of the quick feedback loop that fed directly from the fans into the writerrs' room also began about this time. I can't remember of 'Scoobies' came from the fandom or not - but it might well have done.
there was an unofficial fan forum and also WB had a forum called "The Bronze" where we all gathered online, it was like a chat room and we would go there and react and comment on episodes, fan theories etc, I don't remember fans calling the gang the scoobies then, but could have been in one of those forums where it was cooked up. I remember it was fun though because writers, actors and even Joss himself would pop in from time to time, they had a special VIP color to their handles, so you always knew when it was them on the official forum. Good times!
I believe The Scooby Gang was started by fans in S1. I think. I despise "Believe." Oz didn't say, "about you." Just that something needs to be done. I didn't have horrible college roommate issues.
Prob by fans in S1 and then the show picked it up in S2 (they where quite receptive to pick up fan things from the Internet), replacing "The Slayerettes" that they used early in S1.
@Henrik_Holst Joss and some of the other writers were regulars on the Buffy Posting Board (The Bronze) as was Alyson in 1997-98. Joss loved getting fan feedback immediately after the episodes aired.
Another solid reaction. There are few things that are put into place for the future but they are not germane to the story. Typical BTVS… things and stories for later having seeds planted before the audience or anyone else can know but on rewatch you go … aahh. So when you think you notice something just relax and enjoy. It will be explained later… sometimes years later. You are great fun to react and watch with and keep doing what you have fun doing. Many times we fans of Buffy try to examine and interpret so much and we forget how much fun and entertainment value the show has In every episode from now to the end. BTW.. when I watched this originally I knew Kathy was evil when she was clipping her toe nails and having them stay on the floor. Only a demon could do that without any shame.
Living Conditions, was quite and interesting episode in that it is showing Buffy going from adolescent to adult. Having now to cope with things that as a child she didn't have to deal with. I am sure that many watching it have been in similar situations when leaving home and having the share with flatmates, and being irritated by the smallest things. Again S4 was strange in that after the High School years the show had to find a new direction. A fairly decent episode, but with some great comedy moments.
Hi, please don't take this as an offense here but what about a season 3 summary episode like the ones you published at the end of the first 2 seasons? I liked those a lot and would really appreciate it. Hope you go on to enjoy S#4
Your mistake was assuming Buffy was "the one". that colored the rest of the events in your head trying to figure out what was happening instead of Kathy being "the one" the demons were looking for. Classic Whedon

This is by far my least favourite episode... Pure filler without anything interesting to add in the big picture department... Probably I won't find it so annoying if it wasn't for the ending of the previous episode...
Maybe - but I think it's more similar to Trouble with Tribbles. They both derive humour from the stalwart hero of the series, who has saved civilisations by keeping their cool in a crisis, completely failing to keep their cool when confronted by minor annoyances. Kirk doesn't descend into a murderous rage, but he spends most of the episode either huffily trying to hold onto his dignity and utterly failing or getting very catty with his irritating bureaucrat bosses.
I think it would go without doubt that many of the writers including Joss was TOS fans. Babylon 5 was also a huge inspiration (and also compare S4x22 of B5 with S4x22 with Buffy, very strange coincidence).

Not sure when else, but they call them the scoobies all the way back in Go Fish.
Awesome way to end this episode. I almost dropped my coffee cup. LOL
I don't think my freshman roommate showered the whole semester. He stunk. His clothes stunk. It was bad.
When he was out of the room, I would spray Lysol on his bed, clothes, boots, etc.
Thankfully, after one semester I was able to move dorms and get a new roommate.
I miss Angel Long live Angel Buffy did get over him fast though
People really need to listen to Buffy, shes a demon expert duh.
"Hypnotization situation" I love that!
My college life:
I actually didn't live on campus during college. I rented a separate place with my youngest brother, who was also I college.
I had gone to Bible school for two years prior to going to college, which explains why my brother and I were going there at the same time.
Buffy swallowing the gum so she could deny leaving gum on the nightstand.
Adam Kaufman, who played Parker, is still acting. He was married to actress Poppy Montgomery ("Without A Trace", "Unforgettable").
I caught him in an ep of Veronica Mars, too.
I love that Céline Dion + Cher fan = Demon in the Buffyverse (and yeah, in real life too, who’re we kidding?)
You will need to react to Angel as well as Buffy. Also you need to react in episode order with Angel after Buffy.
That discussion has been had, and it's already in order.
@@vampyre_with_a_suntanTH-camrs have a right to beg for Angel. Normally when you start an episode of Buffy you reference Angel and talk about both from this point on.
@@jeanetteking434No need to beg! As she’s declared, she’s not doing Angel on TH-cam, and that’s the end of the story. You can find that on Patreon if you would like (:
She doesn't NEED to do either of those things lol
You can certainly feel a certain way about it .. but the reasons for things being the way they are have been explained 118 times at this point. @@jeanetteking434
But I'm dying to know Cassie's reaction to Angel? And the cast! I respect Cassie's decision, but can we at least discuss it in the Buffy videos?
02:54 - 03:12 For a moment I thought the barking was from the episode and I was like:"I don't remember a dog being in this scene.🤨"then I realized it was _your_ dog.😄🐶
05:53 - 05:58 Not _this_ one.😁😉 08:27 - 08:58 The Scooby Gang _is_ a thing,but not in the italian dubbing,unfortunately.😭💔 The 1st movie came out when"Buffy"was almost over.
I agree about passive-aggressive people. I can't deal with them.😡💢 14:21 - 14:28 🤐🤐🤐🤐🤐🤐🤐 20:13 - 🤣🤣🤣😱😱😱
I feel bad for Kathy. I didn't like her,but I feel bad for her.🙁 23:03 Look at our short king!!🥺🧡
kathy lol ,nothing but love stories
In college, I'd go to the dining hall in a hoodie and military BDU pants. I could smuggle half a dozen donuts out in the pockets and hood.
My dog is called Buffy
I've never thought about this despite all the times I've watched this ep but -- What was she doing with a carton of eggs? Even if they have a hotplate, the whole room would smell like a diner all the time. Obviously evil!!
first time scooby gang was in season 2
I’m pretty sure (though my memory may be tricking me) that “Scooby Gang started on the official posting board for the show (called “The Bronze” for obvious reasons), and that the writers picked it up from there and started using it in the show. But regardless, as others pointed out it first showed up in Season 2. (I started watching it and joined the posting board around then, which is why I may be wrong about which came first.). So it does fast predate the Scooby movies. 😂
13:17 god ive never looked at the plastic baggie box parker gives her, "Tightly" brand "stays really tight" "seals tighter than ..."
I reckon it's one of them fake prop brands, like Let's potato chips.
@@Xhalph definitely, it's just funny prop design
I love my college roomate... great dude. But man... he used to walk around and would randomly close one nostril, and shoot boogers out the other one. I caught him doing it in the apartment with nothing to catch it. Roomates are... complicated.
This episode is hilarious 🤣
Its one of the most funniest episodes of buffy
Lovely reaction as always!
Kathy effectively being hauled off by the ear by her dad will never not be hilarious.
I do feel for her though.. all girlie wanted was to sharpen her pencils, keep tabs on the phone bill and bang it out to Cher.
4x3 is a "skip credits!!" btw.

had my own apartment for my brief time in college
On the 'Scooby Gang' thing - this was broacast in the early 2000s - the internet - and internet fandom was just, just starting to be 'a thing;'. - and the beginnings of the quick feedback loop that fed directly from the fans into the writerrs' room also began about this time. I can't remember of 'Scoobies' came from the fandom or not - but it might well have done.
I wouldn't be surprised. Spike was only made a main character because of intense positive fan reception.
there was an unofficial fan forum and also WB had a forum called "The Bronze" where we all gathered online, it was like a chat room and we would go there and react and comment on episodes, fan theories etc, I don't remember fans calling the gang the scoobies then, but could have been in one of those forums where it was cooked up. I remember it was fun though because writers, actors and even Joss himself would pop in from time to time, they had a special VIP color to their handles, so you always knew when it was them on the official forum. Good times!
I believe The Scooby Gang was started by fans in S1. I think.
I despise "Believe."
Oz didn't say, "about you." Just that something needs to be done.
I feel a little bad for Kathy, she was only trying to get an education
I'm a season 4 supporter. At least 5 top 25 episodes in S4. Sadly it takes awhile before we get to any of them...
A roomate from hell. Only in the hellmouth. Welcome to Sunnydale U.
The best season 🙏🏻
Hi, please don't take this as an offense here but what about a season 3 summary episode like the ones you published at the end of the first 2 seasons? I liked those a lot and would really appreciate it.
Hope you go on to enjoy S#4
Your mistake was assuming Buffy was "the one". that colored the rest of the events in your head trying to figure out what was happening instead of Kathy being "the one" the demons were looking for. Classic Whedon
Spoilers
"Is he going to be evil or dead by the end of the episode" If only...
I remember thinking...we had Cordelia (if buffy wasn't the slayer) faith (if buffy went dark) kathy...must be if buffy had a sister, I think my guess holds up.....but the looking position thing is better
They were both passive aggressive, and Buffy was a terrible roommate almost the entire episode.
That can happen when someone is stealing your soul.
yay
Did kind of feel sorry for Kathy. If her family had just left her alone none of this would have happened as Kathy was only sucking Buffy's soul to throw those hunting her off her trail.
Only tuned in for the intro to see if you had changed your nind about angel
She explained her decision last episode, she did change her mind. Instead of not filming Angel at all, she’s filming it and throwing that rough uncut footage on Patreon! (:
Obviously I was talking about TH-cam reactions.
@@syprior1138 No worries, she’s already made her decision there, nothing to change her mind about! That bonus Angel is there on Patreon now if you want it!! (:

in my opinion season 4 is one of the worst seasons. the weirdest thing? it has some of the best episodes. I think that is definitely an accomplishment
This is by far my least favourite episode... Pure filler without anything interesting to add in the big picture department...
Probably I won't find it so annoying if it wasn't for the ending of the previous episode...
The writer of this episode is almost a guaranteed Star Trek Original Series fan. Some Trelane action going on here.
@@Talisguy I meant the powerful other worldly creature that was being bad getting dragged away by it's parents and saving the protagonists in the end.
I think it would go without doubt that many of the writers including Joss was TOS fans. Babylon 5 was also a huge inspiration (and also compare S4x22 of B5 with S4x22 with Buffy, very strange coincidence).
@republicoftexas3261 Nicely spotted! I think of that Star Trek episode ending every time I watch this one. I think it's been pretty well established that the whole Mutant Enemy team are (like us 😁) pop culture fanboy geeks.
