I discovered this song recently, despite having grown up and lived in France in the 1980's and 90's. Maybe this was a little before my time. I remember seeing Sardou on TV with short hair. It is indeed a unique song. I was actually searching to see how it came about. I thought maybe it was a movie song. It is quite a production and it paints a living picture of that Irish county.

This song is an hommage to Ireland loved by the french even if the Irish just don't know the song!

Trust me, with the countless French Expatriate in Ireland, they had the time to make Irish discover this song XD

      I didn't realise that!
Now, trust me, the Irish have not ended seeing french people: not only the expats but also tourists... or simply people wanting to improve English!
This is due to the fact that the french litteraly LOVE Ireland, and that Ireland benefits from a super positive image from the french with absolutely beautifull natural landscapes, celtic culture, and so friendly people!
... All you just need is to share a Guinness in a pub!
Ryanair even makes the trip to Dublin almost free, and you even don't need a passport!
      What else? (lol)

I only heard this song for the first time in 1998 on a CD of my Belgian roommate at Disney and loved it instantly. C'est dommage que c'est toujours pas trop connu en Irlande, meme si moi Je fais souvent ecouter cette chanson a mes amis et famille depuis mon retour chez moi en 2001. On va arriver un jour!

It's an iconic song in France and elsewhere in the French speaking world. So iconic that a tour of the Connemara Lakes has become a must for all French tourits visiting Ireland.

Sardou is one of the biggest stars in France.
He's 74 now and stopped singing a few years ago.
He has a long list of hits, especially in 70's and 80's.
He used to work a lot with the composer Jacques Revaux (the one who composed "my way"). He usually writes the lyrics, alone or with more experienced lyricists.

Popularly, however, he remains far behind Johnny Hallyday.
Johnny had the shoulders to be an international star of all time if he was an English speaker.

Strangely, this song is used even more in Belgium (Néelandophone) and in the Netherlands than in France. There it is almost impossible not to hear this song at a wedding or a party .... ^^

How to build a bridge between France and Ireland ? Just write a song. Even if irish people don't know this song, french people know where the Connemara is.

If I remember well the genesis of this song It is due to a synthesizer from the 70s which is left in the heat in a car. When it was plugged in a weird sound like bagpipes came out and that gave the idea to make a song about Ireland. While Michel Sardou and his Friends never went to Ireland with leaflets and a dictionary of names, they created this monument.

    Earth scorched in the wind
    Heaths of stones
Around the lakes is for the living
    A bit of hell, Connemara
Black clouds coming from the north
Color the earth, the lakes, the rivers
    This is the Connemara scenery
The following spring, the Irish skies were at peace
Maureen dove naked in a Connemara lake
Sean Kelly said to himself “I am Catholic”, Maureen too
Limerick Granite Church, Maureen Said Yes
    From Tipperary, Barry-Connelly and Galway
They arrived in the county of Connemara
There were the Connors, the O'Connollys, the Flahertys of the Ring of Kerry
And something to drink three days and two nights
    Down in Connemara
We all know the price of silence
    Down in Connemara
    They say life is madness
    And that madness is danced
    Earth scorched in the wind
    Heaths of stones
Around the lakes is for the living
    A bit of hell, Connemara
Black clouds coming from the north
Color the earth, the lakes, the rivers
    This is the Connemara scenery
We still live there in the time of the Gaels and Cromwell
To the rhythm of the rain and the sun
    In the footsteps of horses
We still believe in lake monsters
That we see swimming some summer evenings
    And dive again for eternity
    We still see
Men from elsewhere who came to seek
Rest for the soul and for the heart, a taste of better
    We still believe
That the day will come, it's near
Where the Irish will make peace around the Cross
    Down in Connemara
We all know the price of war
    Down in Connemara
    We don't accept
    Welsh Peace
Nor that of the kings of England

The French (and French canadians when singing in French) rarely oversing. This is why I like the French productions of stage musicals such as Les Miserables and Notre Dame de Paris. The Broadway versions are over the top. I always feel like the actors/singers are screaming. Celine Dion sings a number of her songs both in French and in English (often the original version is French). She screams in the English version, but not in the French version. It's a different audience.

Fun fact Nr. 1 : even today, Michel Sardou doesn't understand how this song could become such a huge banger.
Fun fact Nr. 2 : Michel Sardou ALWAYS looks bored and annoyed when he sings, even in concerts with 80.000-100.000 participants.
