Even as a long term lover of all Choral Music, this comes in as my No 1 choice. I can't describe it in the same technique terms as others have done so far, but it is simply hauntingly beautiful, a masterpiece in its own right. As a 66 Yr old male who thought I'd heard everything, this reduces me to a blubbering wreck each time I hear it - tears of sheer joy! It's my principle sing at my funeral!
I agree. I feel the same way. It moves me almost to tears. Part of the credit goes also to the Monteverdi Choir. They turn to gold anything they sing...
@@Opoczynski Because it's a meaningless statement. The "noodnik" David Woods lays TH-cam comments faster than my great aunt's old retarded hen lays eggs.
This sounds like the music angels must sing in the presence of the Almighty. If such a place exists, I hope when I die this is the type of music welcoming me to the Hereafter.
This piece is one of the most beautiful pieces of the entire Renaissance. It is also a compositional tour-de-force. The top four voices imitate the lower four voices five notes higher two bars (measures) later.
JEAN MOUTON { SAMER 1459-1522 SAINT-QUENTIN } - " NESCIENS MATER " - THE MONTEVERDI CHOIR - GARDINER.
I'd forgotten how breathtakingly beautiful this is, but was reminded by a live performance last night, that was definitely 'eye moistening'. The conductor was keen to point out that it was a 'four part canon', and then proceeded to try and demonstrate that via audience participation!
The entire piece is an exact 8 ex 4 canon at the octave! In addition there is a cantus firmus embedded in the fabric. Such tenderness - it sounds to me like a lullaby! (Most performances of this employ a faster tactus.)
I agree with AthensAnna ( and have such music piped through my mp3 player whilst laboriously shopping) Thank you kindly for sharing; how could one not subscribe to your channel! Cheers
Heard it at the National Cathedral in Washington a few days ago and thought initially it was by Tallis before learning about Jean Mouton. He and his friend/mentor Josquin Des Prés were 50 years before Tallis and nonetheless as masterly at polyphonic music
Everything about this piece is flawless. Even without knowing much Latin, you sense this is music beyond time, space, history. The part between 4:11 and 4:42 gives me shivers... I feel I'm listening to the universe revolving like a huge wheel. Thank you for loading this long-time favourite of mine!
If there be any earthly pieces worthy of the virgin mother and of the Christ she bore, here is one. Upon hearing this music, any soul cleansed by God must be further purified, yet any human at all should enjoy a momentary touch of heaven.
Where has this heavenly piece been all my life? Thank God I have (at 78) at last caught up with it.
The same for me.
I am just ten years behind you and echo your thoughts.
Fortunately I heard it at 48. Nearly performed it with friends but there came an obstacle. I hope to sing it some day
Gardiner 's ensemble found all the tenderness and glory in this music.

Truly music from Heaven. Absolute sublime perfection.
Lucky beyond words to see The Sixteen include this in their performance last night, it is indeed a gentle hug from Heaven to replenish the soul.
The interweaving of the parts to a static chordal foundation is so evocative. Surely one of the finest examples of early renaissance choral music.
This is perfection.

Do you mean it's a (double) canon?
@@Opoczynskino, ee downt mean dat😂
Very emotional and powerful. I felt that power in my all veins. Lots of love from Turkey.
Ethereal, celestial, transcendentally beautiful.
Ethereal. Timeless beauty.

Gorgeous, peaceful music , outstanding performance !

A piece that I find eternally moving and peaceful 🙏
Sublime - time stands still.
Thank you Mark for your beautiful music,
Merry Christmas!
Dearest Mark, thank you for all the beautiful music you bring! Happy Christmas!!!

The whole universe *is* revolving around the Earth! Please see www.galileowaswrong.com
I have no idea what you just said but it does sound heavenly.
"song of a time in which religious faith was more prominent. Singing raises the spirit which reaches peace." (somewhat literal translation)
achingly beautiful, wonderfully sung. this sounds terrific played by 6 celli too. I've tried it with 6 bassi too, but it's quite difficult for basses.
True beauty.
Heavenly!
Hermosa.
Beautiful: intimation of a heaven. Thank you.
Thanks

4:22-4:29 Sublime.
Heavenly. What is the source of this audio? Is it from a CD? Would greatly like to know. Thanks for posting.
heavenly... it must sound like this in heaven!
Does this "Nesciens Mater" have a composing background? Or scriptures?
Played this song (done by William Orbit) on headphones through an iPhone 6 on a bus from Adelaide to Melbourne in July 2019. Nearly sent me to sleep.
You don't need to be religious to cherish this beautiful piece of music - in case I'm not!
wow - beautifully sung - though I wonder how the piece ends, I must have drifted off...
really that slow?
Nec plus ultra.
