      I just visited here over the weekend and I discovered that the final business on the interior concourse of the mall will be closing March 27th. I’ve been going to this mall my entire life, and even used to work at a store there for 2 years. It’s so incredibly sad to see it like this now. Pieces of the ceiling are literally caving in now, and they don’t even turn all the lights on inside anymore.

    Every time I see the color combinations of salmon and turquoise, I'm reminded of the furniture I was given for my first apartment in 1999. It was that lovely combination of salmon, turquoise and mint green in the oh-so-90's Southwestern print that was so popular. I giggle and hard roll my eyes that all of that is coming back into style again with teens.

    • @IVR02
      @IVR02 7 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      I'd buy it. Then again, I'm just a dumb teenager who's obsessed with pop culture from, oh... 1967-1999?

    • @Firevine
      @Firevine 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hah, I had a couch and loveseat that I got from my parents when I first moved out with that same color scheme, and the awful 90's floral print. Also in 1999. When I lost the house I lived in from 2004-2008, I just left 'em there.

    • @mindyroth2782
      @mindyroth2782 7 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      BikerBoyNJ You're a teen who's into pop culture and collects nostalgic items. That's a lot different than a teen who thinks pastel colored southwestern prints are something new and trendy. For instance, one of my son's female friends was showing me "these cool chokers that look like a tattoo!". I explained to her that I wore those in high school and showed her a pic. She looked floored. So, in no way was I calling any teens dumb.

    Born and raised in Bloomsburg and moved to Honolulu four years ago. Breaks my heart to see this, feel like crying. I remember when there used to be a semi-cool FYE in this mall where you could get movies and records and Titanic posters. We used to always go to the Claire's near one of the exits-there was also a middling pizza shop in that wing that reminded me of a place in the Steamtown/Frackville mall. As a kid my family had an unreliable Pontiac Firebird and I remember going into that very Radioshack to get a cellphone in case we got stuck on I-80. It was a special occasion back then because no one we knew had one. Different times.

      When I was on a school trip, I don't remember where. Somewhere in mid-North Carolina, closer to the mountains. Our hotel was near an old mall. I know because a group of us walked over to mob the dollar store (with a chaperone. We were in middle school). I mean the mall looked in bad shape. I'm not entirely sure the interior was even in use anymore. They were advertising the possible future home of a laser tag operation, and haunted house thing at the mall entrance. I really wish I had had a camera to snap pictures.

    I'm really loving your Dead Mall Series Dan! It's so strange to actually "notice" the desolate space. It's creepy, sad and weird all in the same emotion if that makes any sense. All the late eighties and early to mid 90's decor is just wow! I'm sure they don't replace it because of the cost that it would take. Seems like the malls that have this type of decor are more prone to becoming dead because of their lack of updates or something. It's really hard to believe they're no toy stores. no hobby stores, no record stores, this one didn't even have a game store. It's crazy

    For those who don't have dead or dying malls in their areas, they are a lot more depressing in person than on video, especially if it is one you grew up going to. There is one in my area that is on a beach that has been featured on various movies and TV series over the years and it also has a Hotel attached to it that was always rather creepy even back when the mall was active. Now the only left inside the mall is a single coffee stand and maybe a small convenience store that is directly in front of the Hotel check in area, otherwise it is nothing but empty display cases and broken dreams.

The Lycoming Mall located in Muncy Pa 45 minutes north west of the Columbia Mall is also heading quickly in the dead mall direction. the Lycoming Mall lost Macys in march and the JCPenneys is slated to close, plus I can't imagine Sears lasting much longer. That will leave just 2 anchors:Bon-Ton and Burlington Coat Factory.

    I find it heartbraking and interesting at the same time.
    First, I'm not from North America so to learn your culture spending weekend hanging out in a mall (like why?) is interesting. What exactly people with families were doing there? It is just different and interesting because of the difference.
    Second, it is heartbreaking. I mean, for us now it is easy to say "haha, not trendy, cannot innovate, die", but at one point of time there were people with big plans and dreams were behind a lot of these businesses. And I cannot image how they feel when they see their "babies" go. It is sad.

      @RunicLady 6 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      It's difficult to explain it exactly, but in the 70s/80s/90s-ish, people either had a lot of disposable income or they had a lot of 'credit'. At this time in American culture we as a whole practically worship consumerism- buying and owning things, having luxurious and fun stuff that 90% of the time was just superficial stuff we didn't need.
      The things was, a lot of credit was given out back then, very easily. Too easily. People who didn't have money to spend could easily get credit to spend money they didn't have so they too could join in on worshiping consumerism. Because for a while it was so easy/commonplace for people to spend money even if they didn't actually have it, putting a bunch of stores together in one conglomerate that offered a lot to buy in one cool trip was a very profitable venture.
      I remember as a young child a trip to any mall mean I'd probably get to do something cool like go to an arcade, eat some food our at a restaurant, and maybe I'd get a toy or a video game from one of the stores with my parents.
      Time have really changed. It seems to me that very few people go out shopping as an activity, and more as a necessity. It's because all of the reckless borrowing/crediting eventually caught up to everyone and there were some really bad crashes that left a lot of people and businesses bankrupt. Now many people have learned their lesson and don't just throw money around, even when they have it.

      a lot of north american cities aren't laid out in such a way that there's a lot of community spaces, so going to the mall was just a place to go. i grew up in a suburb like that, and there was a downtown but it was far away, so shopping areas were really the only public places you could go and wander around and be social (and see movies, eat, etc)

    it really amazes me how there are stores still open in these dead malls. i went to a dead mall here in ATL and i felt so weird in it...i felt so bad for all the people working there, because it'll be a matter of time before they all run out of business.. what will they do then?? the thought of those hard working people being left with no job really saddens me..and to think they have to work in a place like a dead mall?? damnn..i feel really bad

    This is so sad to watch, I love going to malls, our mall lost a ton of its stores and we are honestly so lucky to even have any decent clothing stores anymore. It used to have a thriving food court, I remember back in the early 2000s when I was a kid and would go with my parents and we'd always get pretzels, there used to be so many amazing shops, now everything left. We're getting a trampoline park and a senior center at ours and just got a Dunhams and planet fitness. You'd honestly think with all the vintage trends or whatever coming back, that people would shop at malls more. Hell, my mom and I went to our mall on Black Friday and you could have laid in the middle of the mall and not gotten trampled, there's was almost nobody around. It seems strip malls are becoming the thing now, we just got one not too long ago and got a Trader Joe's, pier one, ulta beauty, old navy and gap in walking distance from our house. Though my dad was talking about how malls are being forced to close do to stores leaving bc of a whole corporate greed ordeal, people just want way too much for stores to stay at their malls.
