Extreme Tumbler vs Thumler's Tumbler

  • amzn.to/48XPPTj As we just got in the Rock tumbling to make larp mats, I bought a few different tumblers because I wasn't quite sure of the differences. Extreme tumblers have a lot of features for the money and can produce products faster while carrying additional payloads. This video is a side-by-side comparison of both the tumblers that I bought so people can see the major differences.

    Except the extreme isn’t designed for rocks , it’s specifically designed for steel media and brass, it turns at a far to high a rate for rocks

      Say what you will. We've tumbled lots of rocks in this and they turn out beautiful.

      Actually, the extreme now offers a slower turning barrel, made for rocks. I have it and have been using it now about 1 month. The leveling feet and the bearings do impress me as something that will give me a much longer longer life and the price point was good.

    how come you didn't use the comparable thumler Tumber? the B model has a lid like the extreme tumbler.... not sure the other differences

    • @LarpCraft
      @LarpCraft  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Extreme is way tougher, has bearings not bushings, base is thicker, motor is stronger, belt is better... it's just hands down better built.

    Question with what you've seen; Is the Extreme overly aggressive on the tumbling, or does the inner coating cancel the aggressive nature of the tumble? My concern is the possibility of catastrophic break down of what is being tumbled doe to speed.

      When we got it, we didn't buy it with any package, just the machine. We do use media in it to take the rust off steel that we use in our arrowheads.

    I just set up my Extreme 17, it’s working away in the studio as I write this. In my opinion it’s very well made. My studio is full of the best metal working machinery such as Ellis, Burr King, Miller, Kama, I know good equipment and have no complaints with the tumbler. The motor is 1250 rpm, turn down appears to be excellent. Minor issue was having to burnish the inside of the motor pulley in order to slip it on the shaft, all else great.

    I have a Model "B". It's set up for rocks. I'm hoping the Barrels are the same size or fit. Had a little Thumbler rock kit as a kid. Had a nice conversation with Al one evening. Just the same thing only a little different. Put parts in. Turn on. Wait some time. Remove parts. Pretty simple. Both should be great.

    • @LarpCraft
      @LarpCraft  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Glen Craig but bushings as opposed to bearings and a thicker metal and stronger motor with built-in switch there is no comparison the extreme is better.

    • @TCA4570
      @TCA4570 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the response. I totally understand. That's why I'm buying yours too. Your Model "B" in the vid is not the same as mine, or others out there. The barrel is different. Size is different. Bearings, big plus! Heavier base is needed for bearings. Another plus.
      I'm not getting it to replace my old, slow Model "B", but to let me do other things it can't do as good.
      Looks like the best value to try stainless media for the first time too. Thanks again for your response.

    Apples to oranges! This not the metal container model of Thumblers Tumblers. Slower rpm prevents damage to ROCKs being tumbled which is the original design for Thumbler. Plastic pellets are also added to cushion the polishing rocks. Not a fair review!

    • @LarpCraft
      @LarpCraft  ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry you feel that way. We spin metal and rock and looking at the key differences in the build quality was night and day difference, which spawned this video out of disappointment.

      Look, I bought what I could afford. These two were in the same price category. Thus, they were reviewed. Shame on you for trying to belittle me for my honest opinions. There is no comparisons... if they were close, I wouldn't even of made this darn review, most likely. The poor quality of the thumblers and lack of features made me upset enough to speak out! Look, I love buying American, which is why I got the thumblers first. But the things lacking are simply unacceptable especially for new folks coming I to the hobby.

      The 2 tumblers you have in this video can't really be compared accurately. The way you're comparing them is like comparing a DeWalt DCP580B hand planer to a DeWalt DW734 thickness planer. Both good but still different. The Extreme Rebel 17 is a 17 lb tumbler and the Thumler AR12 is a 12 lb tumbler. The Extreme might have 2 different motors, 1 for Rocks and 1 for other material. Thumler model B (15 lb), which is the closest in size to the Extreme 17, does have 2 different motors, 1 for Rocks and 1 for casings and other metals.

    Better check those pillow block bearings. They are suppose to be self aligning pillow block. But if they have a lot of lateral slop or play back and forth. Bad pillow block. Pillow blocks are suppose to have some movement, but there is suppose to be lateral resistance in that movement. I bought new ones because of this.

    2 phases
    wash with dawn to remove dirt - 30 mins
    decap brass, resize
    polish with phosphoric acid and pins to polish - 45 mins
    Marc M-252 Tuff Stuff Commercial Cleaner - amazon
    20% phosphoric acid
    cap full
    Rinse, place tumbler in a 5 gallon bucket of water

    For those that do not know, the Model B has a barrel that holds about 20 lbs of content and the motor is a 3100 RPM instead of the normal 1500 RPM. Matter of fact, it looks like the tumbler on your left is a copy of the Thumler but with a different base. Is this supposed to be some entry video to get you hired in with the Onion? Good show! HAR! You had me thinking this was real for a second there... Gotta love the fake news and fake reviews...

      umm... wow, ok. Right away bent out of shape because the thumler did't live up to the name.. fake huh? Bought the thum first as it was American made and a reputable company based on peer reviews and support. What a pile of junk compared to the extreme. Was very disappointing to see the lack of features. We don't usually review this type of equipment but this product was so horrible, it had to be made. Get an extreme and see for yourself. Looks like your a gun lover, the firearm community reviews on the extreme are what prompted the 2nd tumbler purchase. Cleaning brass in the extreme is twice as fast!

    • @jlic
      @jlic 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use my extreme for rock tumbling. Typically it’s a one week tumble before you open it up... I couldn’t wait that long and took a peek at day five and the grit was completely gone. I’m glad I looked. Turns out that this tumbler works much more quickly! I don’t have a model B so I can’t compare it to that, this is just my experience.

    • @markl350
      @markl350 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The model B Thumbler has the choice of low speed or optional high speed motor.

    • @foxworkshopdotcom
      @foxworkshopdotcom ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The Model B holds 15 lbs, not 20 and comes in both a high speed and low speed option. The tumbler in the video isn't a copy. It's a model A-R12 with a 12 lb capacity. The problem with tumbling rocks at a high speed is that they will be more prone to breakage/cracking/bruising.
