on the outside, a good scrubber and lots of elbow grease is hard to beat. On the inside, those hard to get areas can often be helped by putting a handful of BB's in the canteen and rolling them around for a few minutes.

Trick I did for my military canteens....Sacrifice the last link in the chain (cut with wire clippers) and install a small split-ring key chain to the end of the links and the connection on the canteen. That way you can just slide the chain out of the key ring and remove the cap. Works like a champ, try it out.

My set-up is a plastic G.I. canteen with cup on the bottom that has butterfly folding handles. Below the cup is a modern canteen stove, also form-fitting. Carried in a Rothco canteen cover. It's an excellent all-around kit that allows for carrying water, purifying it by boiling water, and a stove for canteen-cooking.

Adam, I applaude you for the caution regarding plastic and aluminum. I stopped using them many years ago. Just because they are BPA free doesn't mean they are safe. As always, thanks for a nice review.

I always crack up when people refuse to drink out of plastic. How do you think the water comes into your home?? Through plastic pipes man!! There is literally no way possible to drink water that didn't flow through plastic at some point unless you filter all your water directly from a lake. Having said that, I prefer drinking from SS because I like the taste better and it reminds me of drinking from my grandfather's artesian well as a child.

    • @GooberMcSnuffles

I agree that water tastes better from SS. I also wonder why it tastes better? If no chemicals are leaching from the nalgene bottle, then how can the water taste differently in SS versus Plastic or Nalgene?

You may want to keep the canteen holster, it helps to handle your hot cup, and after you boil your water at night you can put your bottle in it so you can put it in your sleeping bag for warmth without burning yourself. You can also dip the holster in water so your water cools faster and stay cold. We often used to bend a spoon and carry it inside -the spoon nests in the "shoulder" of the canteen. Last tip: a coton hankerchief between the canteen and the cup makes this thing noise-free.

    Hi!
I had a french aluminium canteen when i was in french army, and i still use it for backpacking.
There is some interesting mods you can make with it: first you put ducktape around the cain because the rattling noise is very annoying, and you cut 2 chain 'rings' and replace them with a keyring, so you can remove the cap when you boil water. When you do this, keep the canteen in the cup and spread out the handles for stability; aluminium have a very good heat conductivity.

Nalgene is very forward in what types of plastic's are used in their bottles. Just visit their website>explore and select either "Safe" or "Materials". All their bottles are BPS, BPA, and Phthalate free. BUT note that heating plastic beyond certain ranges (The range is usually just above boiling) can release some of the plastic resins into the water. They are perfectly safe, just don't heat them over a fire!

I use a 64 Oz Klean Canteen for my filtered water, And an untapered Guyot Nalgene for cooking.
I drilled 2 2mm holes through the "lip"under the lid,and mounted a 2 foot long chain to it so i can use it like a kettle.I rub a little bio-soap around its bottom, so the soot does come off more easily.
As for the plastic bottles: i agree to everything Adam said. As long as Plastic producers don't have to declare their formulae or recipes (with softeners) i am highly sceptic about their longterm safety

Best system I have used is a standard plastic military canteen pared with a kidney cup. The pouch which comes with it has a large enough pocket to hold a hexi stove, fuel and fire starter so you have everything to purify water.

Good comment on the slanted bottom bottles. I recently bought one without thinking and went out on a hike, the dam thing rattled so much it drove me nuts. As for the plastic safety, my dad works in the petrochemical industry and people would be blown away as to what goes into making one of those. BPA is not the only thing to be worried about. Take care guys!

The BEST thing I've found to clean and sterilize stainless steel bottles is Polident Tabs, although I'm sure any denture cleaner tabs would work! I have a stainless thermos I use for work, and I fill it with cold water once a month, and drop a tab into it and let sit overnight. I'm serious, this works!

With the Guyot bottle, you could place the steel cup over the lid of the bottle rather than putting the bottle into the cup. I just tried it out and verified it works a bit better.

another downside you forgot to mention about plastics is they hold odor..If you have drinks besides water in them, the plastic will soak up the taste..I think the benefits of SS outweigh the slight weight increase..ymmv

A green 3M scouring pad will remove almost anything from metal, including burned on stains and soot from cooking. A blue 3M scrubbing pad is almost as good, and doesn’t scratch ‘no-stick’ surfaces. I fold the pads in half for use at home, but for camping I cut them in half to use less rinse water.

Adam I know I have grilled you before for some of your reviews but I think this was a good review. If your just getting started in the outdoor lifestyle you can spend a lot of money on hit and miss gear. I personally use a WW2 replica stainless steel canteen with cup and lid and love it and it only cost me about $30. I understand peoples comments on plastic it is every wear in our society but the reality is plastics have only been around for 50 years and we are still learning about what chemicals can leach out "BPA". The fact is I don't trust plastic as well because we are still playing around with formulas to make it harder/softer/flexible/ and durable. If we are still playing around with it to perfect it then we still have more to learn. Keep up the good work.

A larger split ring or small amount of light wire rope can be attached to the USGI canteen making it easy to detach the cap and hang over the fire.

  • @05Rudey

I prefer something stainless steel while hiking, as it's very strong and it has the ability to boil water from an open camp fire, making it a one item solution for when lightness is of the essence, like when you are walking 15 - 20 miles a day on a 3 day hike. Also, I prefer something with a wide mouth (and no, I'm not talking about women) it just makes it easier and quicker fill and to keep it clean and visually see it's clean.
Guyot Designs bottle tick all the boxes for me. But hey, if I'm just out camping and not planning a heavy day's walking, a plastic Nalgene bottle with a nested Tatonka metal cup does me just fine.
You don't need to spend a fortune, i can go over the top with equipment paying top dollar, but on the other side of the spectrum i have done over nighters with a 2 ltr bottle of water from a shop and a 50 year old dented enamelled tin cup that belonged to my granddad, a grubby old tarp roll, a just as grubby wool blanket, a Swiss army knife with a few cans of beans (which were turned into billy cans for further cooking and boiling usage) in a old canvas knapsack and had just as much fun in the great out doors.

My favorite ‘canteen’ is a 32 oz. Powerade bottle. They cost less than $1.00 each, weigh about one third as much as most nalgene ‘sports’ bottles, come prefilled with tasty sports drinks in a variety of flavors, and when they begin to show wear after weeks of use; just drop them in a recycle bin and buy another.

The 20oz klean canteen can be hung over the fire by attaching a 2" automotive hose clamp around the neck with a split ring key chain ring. Those are my second favorite after the USGI as they cannot be worn on the hip.

Good review. One thing about a military canteen that is hard to beat and that is the ease of carry. These were designed to hang on a belt. All others just don't hang easily or they are made for a pack carry. I can set my pack down and still have my canteen on my waist or if it is attached to the pack, I can remove it and easily hook it to my waist and get going. The others you buy pouches for but they always hang funny, either on your waist or more often than not off your shoulder. This is just my feeling, others may not be bothered. Sadly I have wasted a lot of money to find that out.

While I can appreciate your attention to detail, I don't understand the need for this debate. The weights are accurate based on the scale I used for all the items. If you don't believe me I will upload a photo album of pictures with the canteen on the scale. As for the guyot at 13:01 I state it was 32 Oz. The 240z Commuter is an extremely tapered that fits in the standard car cup holders. The Backpacker does not have any taper. There are three different models.

Just some quick fun facts about the 40oz klean canteen...they make diffrent screw on sport tops for easy drinking that you can switch out, and if you pair the 40oz klean canteen with nesting cup in the condor H20 pouch and some malice clips then you can wear it horizontal scout style on your belt if you chose...

Yes it's a good point to add the NATO pattern kit to this review. The bottle is plastic so it doesn't meet Adams preferences. I'll put in my $.02 though. IMHO the NATO water bottle cook kit combo is probably the best designed military cook system. However as a primary canteen it sucks because you have to disassemble the thing to get at the water.

I prefer the wide mouth bottles. I had trouble finding a brush that would fit in a GI canteen. If you want ice, the wide mouth will fit standard ice cubes. Opaque bottles are harder to see if they are cleaned properly so are (I think) less friendly if you drink something other than water from home. I think the plastic nalgene are far more versatile for juice + food. If it's going on your belt, the canteen is probably the way to go. The hard hat w/ the 2 beer cans + a tube has it's use too. Lol

Nice vid! Once a month I change the water in my bottles and H2O carriers. I use denture cleaner tabs (2 per 30 oz) and let soak overnite, rinse well and re-fill with fresh water. So far all is well! I like SSteel much better than any other material, but have been known to use the dreaded plastic Nalgene. Maybe that explains some of my erratic behavior! ;) Thanks for the great info!

USA, USA, USA... I have always liked the US canteen and since i just got the steel cover heating water is quick. With a canteen carry pouch it can be conected to almost any type of bag or belt. However, as was stated in the video you get less water. 2nd I would go the new clean canteen, simply because it can boil water right in it. If you don't mind getting it blackend. Good video though, many choices to look at.

have you ever done vacuum flask cooking ? i have found it useful saving on fuel, normally set it up in the morning and use it for my midday meal saving myself time and effort. It is essential to heat food to a safe temperature before vacuum cooking 60 °C for at least 10 minutes will kill most temperature-sensitive bacteria. The food is then safe to cook at below safe temperature for several hours. slow cooker or crock pot recipes can be adapted easily to use in a vacuum cooker. bon appetit

Great video, Adam. This topic has been on my mind lately, and the products you feature in this vid are among the options I am currently carrying, or considering for future experimentation.
I use the wide-mouth, 40oz KK, because I can screw my Katadyn water filter onto it. The 40oz KK also fits into my GSI Soloist cookset, which -- along with a Trangia alcohol burner & Vargo Ti base / windscreen, and Katadyn filter -- cover all of my short-term water purification & food prep needs.

You have to look at the big picture with toxins, I'll see people complain about plastic leaching water bottles then a few hours later cook a ready meal in a cheap disposable plastic container in the microwave. When I stopped smoking, walking beside a fairly busy road for 30 minutes would make the carbon monoxide detector go up to No. 9/10, a normal reading for a non smoker should be 2/3. What else are you breathing in? Do you really know what's in what you eat? Are we really picking the right battles if we want to cut down ALL the toxins in modern life?

Good lord, so many comments about the plastic thing. Okay, so it's probably a little silly to not drink from plastic BPA-free bottles... get over it, it's just his opinion (and, after all, before BPA leeching was known to be an issue, people probably thought it was silly and paranoid to not want to drink out of bottles with BPA in them).
Anyway, I prefer prefer the wide-mouth bottles over the narrow mouth, especially for camping or wilderness survival (not that I'm doing any of the latter myself). My reason is that almost all water filters (that are bottle compatible) are gonna be compatible with wide mouth bottles. Even something like the Steri-Pen, which I have not used myself, but reviews suggest that it just doesn't work well with narrow-mouth bottles. Also, you can fit ice cubes in the wide mouth opening, if you're trying to keep your water cooler longer (most useful for insulated models).
The benefits of narrow-mouth bottles are: more caps designed to drink directly out of them (for Klean Kanteen they have a sport lid that's only compatible with narrow mouth bottles; but their cafe cap works with wide-mouth, doesn't leak, and you can drink water out of it just as well as you could coffee); better insulation for insulated bottles (less non-insulated surface area at the lid- you'll notice the narrow-mouth insulated bottles are rated to keep hot or cold liquids hotter or colder, respectively, for longer). But for me, the benefits of wide-mouth bottles outweigh the benefits of narrow-mouth for most uses. The exception would probably be something like bicycle-riding, where you want more of a sport cap. Honestly, I'd be inclined to use a plastic bottle for cycling, which will also let you squirt water out and can take a fall better.

i kinda prefer plastic because its transparent and you can see if the water is clean and how much you got left.

I think you meant "grade" and not gauge for the steel. The numbers (18/8, 18/10, etc.) are the composition of the stainless steel and refer to the amount of chromium and nickel (respectively) in the product.

I have the 32 OZ guyot the cup will fit over the top I carry it hooked to my condor 2 in the 511 bottle holder and some times I mcarry 2 bottles my other is 40 oz clean canteen with the mouth like your 27 oz I was not aware of the bpa plastic being a problem thanks for the heads up but if I buy bottled water it is in plastic if I use tap water it sits and runs through plastic pipe into a plastic storage tank so no matter it is or has been in cintact with plastic!

The splash guards do fit the wide mouth Klean Kanteen but what I have encountered is that it won't stay in place with the lid on like a Nalgene bottle. The stainless steel inside on the cap knocks it to the bottom of the bottle.

I use the nalgene only in the winter. At -30c it is hard to keep your water from freezing. Even i had to add slee

I don't believe there is enough true research on the topic. Don't get me wrong, I would not be here without plastics. I just try to stay away if I don't have to use them. There is a lot of unknown about the productions, and a lot of health concerns that have been linked to the plastics.

Do some winter hiking in Canada or Alaska? I didn't think so. The military arctic cantene is better then all of those in that environment especially if you get it with the cup and pouch. The entire kit with cup and pouch cost about 15 bucks online.

Plastic are ONLY questionable when you burn it, and change it's chemical bond...which will release toxic fumes Plastic bottles are safe if left alone. Just remember to bring your nuts while you go hiking and you will be fine, unless you are also afraid of squirrels.

The most recent research would contradict your statement. Plastics are not as stable as previously believed, that is why they change color, fade, and have a smell, they are breaking down like everything else. The only issue is the simulate hormones when they breakdown. But based on the maturity of your response I don't believe you want to have a rational decision on the topic.

I'm a BioTechnician. I know a little on how science works. My immaturity response only goes out to those that reads the latest fads on things that companies are making millions off of. First, plastic bottles are bad, so companies created aluminum bottles to bank on. Next, they said aluminum was bad, so Stainless Steel bottles were marketed. After Stainless, companies are now trying to market titanium. Etc...All in all, it's a money sceme. The bottom line is, food grade plastic containers made without BPA are absolutely safe.

I have no reason to disprove what you say on your videos, but at least post a link to cite your research. Many people watch your videos, so it be very unfair for those that will just follow whatever your video tells them. Honestly, I find some of your videos helpful and informative, but please just stick to your field of expertise.

Stet Tan I have discussed areas and resources where people should do their own research and draw their own conclusions based on trusted sources. I agree that there is a money grab going on, and if you are a scientist you also know it's not a fact until it's proven a fact, which is a long process that requires money to create the studies. How long were we told BPA was safe? How many recalls took place for that in baby bottles and other food containers? Furthermore, Plastic formulas are proprietary, and are not regulated, so do you trust ever producer of plastic? I am aware that at this point in time it's almost impossible to get away from plastic, but I'm making a personal choice to stay away when I can. I believe that the possible risk is well worth my investment of a steel or titanium cup. I have also invested in glassware for my packed lunches. "I know a little how science works" as though it not a process of trial and error! Don't forget that sometimes we find supporting evidence for the incorrect conclusions. Especially when the guy paying for our labs, and are looking for a specific answer. In regards to "argument from authority" fallacy, I am a law enforcement officers, I have witnessed multiple "experts" arguing facts in open court both having evidence to support the theories that they pontificate as absolutes.
