I was actually coming in to make my own reply, but in a way, it's already being said. I followed into this link, from seeing him on The Voice Australia. He's amazing! Seeing him perform for TED/Perth, I was really captivated even more, seeing the looks that were glued to the faces. But, I wanted to reply to your specific statement of "new species". No, it's not, only more evolved. This kind of sound originated from as far back as the 1960's that I can remember. From the "do-waps" , quartets and first time synthed samplers. Though, I'll be glad to admit, the level it's advanced, is like comparing a firecracker to a nuclear bomb! This guy is just a powerhouse in sampling, synthed looping using his voice as the only instrument he's producing his effects from, though, I'm sure he's likely got a collection of auto samples stored on memory. Yeah, I'm blown away by his power, passion, and determination to take this kind of sound to the top!

Exactly. I don’t know how a hyped up crowed somehow is associated with appreciation of a performance. If anything, a hyped up crowed wouldn’t be able to appreciate the performance as much.

There’s a difference between a dead crowd and mesmerized one. The atmosphere feels totally different, this one is obviously the latter. Sam is freaking amazing.

I just watched him win The Voice: Australia 2018! A truly remarkable performer and I don't care what his critics say. The guy proved that he can sing with the best of them. He and Kelly Rowland were just aces up on that stage together.

I was mesmerized by Sam the second I saw him on The Voice AU. I'm an old white dude in America but he blew me away instantly. I just don't know if I could have sat there in that audience and not move to what I was hearing. It's great to see him earlier on in his craft. I hope he tours the states one day b/c I would love to see him live. Truly an amazing artist.

I’m not sure if the crowd needed permission to accept great freedom of expression, or they just had no rhythm left in their dulled from living bodies. 😮 How can you not feel Sam’s passion and MMOOOOOVVEE!!

The camera zooms in on Sam demonstrating his amazing talent, then cuts to what appears to be an audience at a paint-drying exhibition and then back to Sam. The song finishes and the crowd breaks into rapturous applause. Then Sam announces he will be performing another song and the crowd fall deadly silent - the shock is palpable. Sam is about two minutes into the second song and, although hard to believe, has just taken the performance up a level. This is clearly juxtaposed against the audience, who now demonstrate that they have mastered the art of appearing bored in the face of greatness. Is this the Zeitgeist of the new millenium?
I just saw this, watched him win the voice, I knew he would win, this performance far better than what he did on the voice, brilliant.

He is a performer of the highest order. He doesnt have to have the best voice, the favorite instrument, the best look, he simply puts everything together in a way that is mesmerizing, emotional, his body language is pure passion, though I do think his vocal range is really good also. Its too bad it took him so long to be noticed, thanks to The Voice.

The area that they are doing this performance isn't meant to yell or cheer. They are mesmerized and are taking in everything. TED is meant for that purpose, to share information and technology.

Yeah he is a seriously good talent, yet with still room to grow even better, especially with his production/composition side. It's not totally new school as I was working with artists doing this in the late 90s - early naughtiness, but to the normal world, which is always 5-10 years behind the Underground, this stuff is from a different galaxy :-) One guy who has definitely nailed the whole package in this area is DubFX - Albums/ Everything's a ripple (2009) & Theory of Harmony are well worth listen ;-)
