Pole Position

- An accident-free run through the complete circuit of five laps on the Namco Speedway course in the Pole Position game (Namco 5-in-1 TV game version) -- with snow-capped Mount Fuji in the background. Approach is imprinted in memory from all of the time (and quarters) wasted mastering the actual arcade game 25 years ago: Maintain full throttle around the entire course, stay on the track for all passing (use the middle of the track to pass between cars), get to and try to stay at top speed (195 mph) for as much of the course as possible, downshift from "HI" gear to "LO" gear for braking when necessary (e.g. in the big hairpin turn) -- and (of course) don't crash into anything. Score was 58250 points (my personal best/top score is 58450 points). Wife and daughters were not as impressed with me as I was with myself. So it is time to re-retire from racing and get back to more productive activity. Video was captured on a Neuros OSD (www.neurostechnology.com); the output of the Namco 5-in-1 box is plugged into the input of the OSD and the output of the OSD is plugged into the auxiliary input on the TV. The video recorded on the OSD (on a USB drive) was then converted to a QuickTime movie using AVS Video Converter 6. Note the odd-looking "double car" at 3:18 and 3:32 (?). Good luck!
I love the sound of the cars passed by
maria calicchia I know right
Nyyoooooooooom
I love how “DAD” is no.1 in the high score lol.
3 too
This was my very favorite arcade game in the 80s.
I liked crashing into the formula 1 car in front of me right before I crossed the finish line to see that explosion slide across the finish line.
U play smash ultimate and you know ltg? Nice! Also I had this game on Jack's specific pac man arcade plug in and i see spent hours on it
if you don't remember the exact pitch of "prepare to qualify" im sorry we cant be friends.
Ironically all of the music is off key by being pitched-up slightly, so that's kinda funny lmao
My favourite arcade game of the 80s
I love that sound.
I used to always play this game when I was in 2nd grade which was 12 years old ago haha good times
The Amazing Vanessa did you crash?
"I'm a car!" "Thats great!"
No, it said "Prepare to Qualify." Low Audio bitrate for the win.
Try "Great driving, you qualified to race."
I'm literally a yellow square!
But That Turn At 1:54 Tho👌🏽 That Shit Was Cold Lol
omg I remember that chick's voice that says "prepare to qualify" and "good driving..." before and after the race hehehe LOVED this game!!!!!
damn this is honestly one my favorite racing games i loved it as a child
that "Game Over" over a still screen is mighty anti-climatic after playing that well! Heck, even Hoyle card games for 8 bit computers ended with little fireworks display or dancing jesters
I spent a lot of hours on this game
Shawn Thomas So did I.
@@richardlysakowski2211 You need a pit stop.
Memories lol I was eight years old in elementary school when this came out.
That was the safest and best pole position ever!
You guys remember how difficult this was with the actually steering wheel. That thing was really sensitive. Much easier with the controllers (I have PS2). I qualified first just once in many tries. I've completed five circuits, but usually down-shift around all turns. I take pride in not having that skidding noise. One of these days I'll try driving in high gear for the whole race without crashing. Might take me a while to pull it off.
Is this the version on the namco plug and play?
I'm trying to find this version that I can use with Dosbox. I have one version but can't get it to start after the initial "select a track" screen.
This game brings back so many memories
This game brings back memories
I had this game on Jack's specific pac man arcade plug in and i see spent hours on it
I remember playing this, and Namco Museum, and Metroid: Zero Mission. Ah, nostalgia.
What’s with the signs
Pole Position, Xevious, Ms. Pacman, Mappy, Galaga, Namco and Dig Dug?
Yeah, wheres Pepsi and Marlboro?
@@jamesb8305 I think it's because either Pepsi and marlboro were copyright or they censored it so that is why the namco games were there.
Plug n Play.
I'm a recent member of the No Crash Club. I got 61,250 on my run. I've gotten really good at going through that hairpin turn without shifting into low gear. It's my favorite turn to go through.
+1. try to have 145 mph or so out of the hairpin, that makes wonders for the game overall. The trick to the game is really mastering the hairpin.
There's 2 methods; 1. shift to low gear, 2. break (by going on the grass) to low enough speed so you can accelerate out of the turn.
If you have 140-145 mph out of the turn, your laptime will often be below 60 seconds, and give you the pole position. Option 2 gives the best results, but is harder to master than option 1.
Personal best after 1 day of playing is 58840.
Granted, I played the arcade in the 80's.
Greetings from Scotland, I regularly completed the whole course without Incident and on the congested left turn I wouldn't slow down, I would just wack my steering wheel at full speed, wish this game was available on android.
3:36 “FINISHED🏎🏁”
Favorite Game from the 80s memories
Wow! 0-60 in 1.4 seconds! Namco made some fast cars
My high score is 58,750 points. I plan to beat that record one day. The trick is to surpass everything that typically slows you down. That second turn is where you have to slow down immediately, but try to speed up as soon as you can while on the far left side of the road, and you'll get through the track quicker. Just a brief second of pressing that button at the second turn, and you'll get more points, but I was never able to do it without crashing, because the cars were in the way. Someone made it to 67,000 points by keeping a constant speed the whole time.
Fuji Speedway and High Speed Ring?
I remember a game like that of Namco Museum, but it featured CGI arcade machines such that of Pole Position, Pac-Man, Ms Pac-Man, Pac-Mania, Galaga, etc... I'm not sure if it was on PS2 or N64, likely N64. I remember my time on the PS2 playing Tony Hawk's Underground. I haven't played any of those games in a while. And I've played two games in the LittleBigPlanet franchise for about 4 years on PS3. LBP3 is coming November 18, 2014. It's pretty coincidental, LBP came out in 2008. LBP2 three years later in 2011. LBP3 is coming three years after that in 2014. Coincidental eh?
My left ear loved hearing this
Nice racing, I can see you've had lots of practice.
Oh yes "Perpertahqukify"
The actual arcade game was much more difficult than the home entertainment system. The game during its time was very challenging. At least I always had difficulty playing at the highest level when I used to play this game. Graphics were outstanding considering the fact that Pole Position was an early 1980s arcade game. It was way ahead of its time when compared to other similar racing games.

It wouldn't say much more difficult. I played yesterday on an upright and finished the race. I crashed once on the second lap. The wheel is more sensitive, and there are more distractions, but I had the petal to the metal the whole time. Definitely in my top 3 games I would buy if I had room.
Great Work!~😊😉😆
Used to play this at the roller rink when the crappy songs came on... good times..
i used to play this game on atari so i got the pole position mini arcade and it’s fun!
Cool. What's the size of your mini arcade?
Me and two other guys ruled this game at the Georgia Tech student center. We only knew each other through our initials. I was ZEE.
Brilliant days,10p ago while you've ordered your lovelly hot chips 😃😘😉😀😃.
As a fellow member of the perfect run club, the only advice I have is to shift back to high in the hairpin as soon as you pass the sign. Otherwise... flawless.
A perfect run is in the eye of the racer. For me that means 2 things: Having the pedal to the metal the whole entire time, and shifting out of low on "the turn" as fast and as tight as possible without nicking the side on every lap including the qualifying lap, which should be under 58 seconds. Three things really if you want to talk about avoiding the puddles. I've played 100's of games and have had some great scores, but I can't say I've had a flawless run where I shifted out of low at just the right moment on every lap. I've come very close though. Less than a second from a perfect run I'd say.... as sad as it sounds.
ahhh....the good 'ol days!!!
“Beeppair ta bottafy”.
*prepare to qualify
The first ever video game I ever played
Pretty good......but you didn't get the high score. (..... The little lights are not twinkling, Clark ! )
In the cabnet version people used to breave all over the window at the back or bang on it
What am I supposed to do in this game? I cannot even play this game because I cannot figure out what I am supposed to do.
The first lap is a qualifying lap. You have to do it in a certain time. Also, make sure you switch from low to high gear at 114 mph.
I came to say I have one of those, and I can't get it working. Really disappointed because I liked the feature where you twist the joystick to steer.
That move is way beyond my skill.
They need team radio?
Used to play this game as a little girl with my plug n play 😭 I was like 4 and would mainly play Ms.PacMan and mappy so when I tried this game out I did horribly 😭 I would drive on the grass 💀 or sometimes crash into cars cause I didn’t know how to drift.
58,650 is your true final score since the original arcade version gave you 200 points for each second remaining on the clock.
Forza 6 got me here.lol
I have some crazy ideas if they were to remaster this video game like Gran Turismo and Forza motorsport the Indy cars should look real and the track should be very long and a lot of tracks and it being multiplayer to race with friends
Vulture Crotch breath that would be amazing
"Prepare to call a fart."
You're so good!!
I had this on a thing with Mrs. Pacman and a couple others
I had the same thing! It has Galaga, Dig Dug, Pacman, and a couple others
FIRST PLACE IN QUALIFICATIONS! WOW!!!!!!!! I was always 6th - 8th.
Awesome just pulled mine out of a dusty closet and I’m very mad the scores don’t save
TheSyrinx63 mine doesn’t 😔 haha
I have the QVC version, and it really wants you to know it too. When you turn it on it reads QVC all across the top and sides. I'm surprised they didn't put QVC on one of billboards on the track. It saves scores. If I would of bought 1000 of them I would be sitting on a gold mine today. I think I got mine for under $20. A new one goes for $125. Unless you play Ms.Pacman, buy used because it doesn't matter with Pole Position how the joystick works. Please Jaaks Pacific...bring back Ms.Pacman plug and play.
I love how you literally can't hear a thing the person speaking says lmao
1:29 you can actually get through that turn without downshifting
0:53 - "Chris And Avenue Qualified the road."
It was sounded to my right ear
If only they put this in the Pac-Man 256 plug n play
If only they had ported Pole Position 2 on there as well.
My high score is 58,000. Too bad the game broke after I got that score.
Fun Fact: This is before F ZERO GAME (if you never heard of f zero, here is a spoiler alert: captain falcon from smash brothers games is in the game called f zero).
Edit: I don't even know what the hell am am I talking about but this comment is cringe and old af lol XD
All arcade games were harder because they were quarter munchers. Guess they figured when you laid out $30-50 (which is .... well a lot of quarters) they would make it a little easier, aka. more fun. Although some home game/game systems offered different difficulty levels. Imagine you were 5 playing at the arcade difficulty level, bummer.
I probably lost $100 in quarters to this game.
i only wached this vidioe becuse i own one of thoese wird namco game controlers that plug into the tv and you can play like five difren games and one of them is pole position so i try to play it and the first thing i notice is a cant turn so i keep on going and when a turn comes i fly of the road and explode and im like is you are spousedde to turn or what so then after a bunch of tries i realize that if you go slow next to the turns you turn so im doing this and i perfected it so much that i need like 5 seconds away from making to the finish an i think that its called pole position because you need to be in the right position to beat it but finaly i decide that some thing is wrong and look up this vidoedoedo and im hate mysefl for trying to beat it i wasted so much timesdnndfap
Did you try twisting the joystick? You hold it on top of the ball and twist it left or right like a steering wheel.
It took me a few tries to figure that out.
I got the same "console" from goodwill.. if you dont know by now you need to actually TWIST the joystick.. dont just point it to the left or right to turn. and the hi low gear buttons are the two buttons.
Tää on hyvä. 😊
Not bad...my best is 59950...2 years ago...still can't hit a perfect game.
The high score on the first game is 29360
3.00 ❤
It’s possible to get 60,000 points
Forza 6 brought me here.
This is not a good game to learn how to properly down shift.
