One of the best pieces of advice that I have implemented is to make a "wishlist" bookmarks folder. I hide mine where it isn't easily visible. If I feel the impulse to purchase something online, first I decide if I really want it, and if I do, I put it in the "wishlist" folder and try to forget about it. Most of the time, if I look in there a month later, I realize that I really don't need that thing. Actually, I've been doing this for over a year and I can't recall ever deciding to purchase anything from that list!

Kimberly that’s an awesome tip! I’m always tasking my coaching clients to at least wait 72 hours when hit with an impulse to purchase. That can do the trick! But I love this idea for online shopping!

Your introspective approach to thinking about spending is so very thoughtful.

I cleaned out my makeup box a couple of months ago and found some eyeshadows and liners that were at the bottom that I hardly used. So it was exciting to see those colors and I use my palettes more now too. I definitely agree on feeling happy about what you own. The desire to feel excited over new things is a hard habit to break. It's my challenge this year to like what I already spent money on or sell it if I don't like or need it anymore.

I totally agree with this - and love that you're bringing awareness to the things you already have this year!

I am hooked on eating out and shopping for my planner which makes NO sense at all!! I'm an amazing cook and my planner has enough supplies to make ShayBudgets jealous! Jk!! The feeling I get when I shop from craft stores is total NIRVANA and holiness. Like, hobby lobby even plays that low key church music too... I need to quit it. Your video has ME LOOKING INWARD!!!!

One way I stop spending is working more and keeping busy reading free Libby books/playing fortnite/audio books/and going to the park for my workouts on my days off.

My biggest break through was realizing the amount of time I was spending cleaning, organizing, and de-cluttering every weekend and not doing fun things. Shopping on the weekend and cleaning. Organizing is relaxing to me, but seeing all the “stuff” is overwhelming. I didn’t have money growing up and had to buy my own clothes (if I wanted new, not hand me downs), so having money now I feel like “I can get this, why not?” I don’t want to pass it to my daughter but I kind of did, now she’s actually pairing down because she feels overwhelmed with what I used to buy for her. I don’t know any kids that say “stop buying me clothes and makeup please.”

Does anyone else go over their budget obsessively trying to figure out how long it takes to get out of debt. But end up shopping and blowing the budget anyways

    • @flyme2themoon720

Its funny... we always find a way to justify what were spending.."oh my rents due in 3 weeks I have plenty of time to figure it out"..I dont know about you but do you feel guilty when you buy whatever it is?..I do and then I never really enjoy what it is I spent it on..it adds more worry that eats at me.its very hard to resist that compulsion though..

That's why a no spend challenge is so good. You can only spend on what is necessary and nothing extra. It's not easy.

Love spending challenges Tess! I usually try picking one or two things from my expenses each month to cut back on. Having a shorter timeline (one or two months) makes it easier to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

I believe that the void we often try to fill by buying stuff, can only be filled substantially by the love and grace of Jesus Christ, who wants to fill us with peace that surpasses our understanding when we believe in Him. I'm doing a no spend to remind myself that He is all I need.

I was trying to get more info about not spending excess money this month, and I stumbled on your video. I'm trying to prove to myself that I don't need to spend money, that I have the things my family needs for the month. So starting on the 1st I will be spending money on only things we need like essential food items and gas. Your videos really helped give me more motivation . Thank you!

What do you suggest a person should do when they just have a need to be distracted.I use shopping as a way to spend time being distracted, looking at things. It helps me forget my troubles. I don't always have the energy to exercise. the weather doesn't always allow me to go for a walk and sometimes I'm so upset I just can't focus to read a book .the thing is I need to get out of the house and get away from an annoying relative in my home. I need alternatives that don't require money.

    • @TessAbroad
      @TessAbroad  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Find a hobby, other than exercise, that gets you out of the home and will ultimately cost less than shopping. Couple examples: 1. Sign up for improv classes.. this is super specific BUT I know it’s helped a lot of people with anger, stress and depression. 2. Start a blog around a particular interest and go blog at a coffee shop. You can write down your feelings OR keep it totally separate from you and just blog about something you’re interested in. 3. Take a class to learn something new! Similar to #1, but this can be anything. How to play Bridge, how to speak another language, how to paint.

One of mine is to do something with a hobby I haven't done in awhile. Maybe it is making a bad drawing or anything. Just to use what I have and to maybe rebute my joy for that hobby. Or at worst I've realized something I don't like so I can donate it to someone who does enjoy that activity.

Have you considered focusing on others as a way of expressing gratitude? For example, I had a whole basket of samples from Sephora purchases. I made care packages for a women's homeless shelter that included samples, socks and feminine hygiene products- things I had in bulk around the house. This was a project for me that took a little time, but was satisfying too.

Last year... I wanted to be a minimalist... I tried and failed.. This year i want to avoid impulse buy which is related to being minimalist.. Tho i failed last year... I am happy i tried...my mind becomes more accustomed to keeping things in my life minimal and simple after a year! Excited on my 2019 jounrey to not spend on things i don't essentially need in life! Cheers to savings!

I think spending is never really anything to do with us, it's really at root to do with what others will think of us. Rejection from the tribe is people's worst fear. We think that if we shop to impress others it's acceptance and safety amongst the tribe.

Yes I definitely am spending to fill something.ive spent most of my life with a low scense of self worth,no father figure and a mother who let money control her happiness...lol.i sound like I'm a mess..no but my spending is ridiculous cuz I own a buisness and spend alot of time stopping at gas stations with the kind of work I do..I have this compulsion to buy stuff everytime I stop and over a 30 day period the number is ridiculous..I used to be very poor and wonder sometimes if now that I have more freedom I do it..I'm not sure but I can easily spend 50 dollars a day at gas stations and convenient stores...smh..how do I break that cycle..I know..dont go to the store..wish it were that easy..any advise would be great..thanks
