    Just a tip the wood you are using is most likely a softwood yellow pine it contains more tars that produce more creosote so more upkeep in your chimney also the wood has nails which can damage the fire brick in the stove just some precautions

      Pallet wood is sometimes pine, sometimes oak or other hardwood. Either way, they might have soaked up chemicals that you might not want to be inhaling.

  • @jraoul711

    I know others in the comments have said this, but pallet wood is made of pine a lot of the time because it's cheap. Pine makes a lot of smoke and is not the best wood for fires. The biggest thing about pallets is they are often treated to prevent rot with chemicals and can also be used to haul hazardous substances that can leak into the wood. You could then be spewing carcinogens out your chimney. Not saying this is the case but just something to keep in mind.

    • @Itsallsotiresome
      @Itsallsotiresome ปีที่แล้ว

      You're not wrong, but Daniel is a bright young lad. I think he'll figure out some way to cut down on the smoke. There are things to take examples from like bio-lite that figured out a way to use a fan to cut down in some cases and even eliminate in some cases the smoke altogether. He might even take this comment and figure out a way to have thermo-electric generators like the bio-lite ones made that aren't as costly to have and use them to have electric energy to spare from the wood stove.
      If the wood is as you said, then it's going to release carcinogens when burnt regardless and if it's disposed of commercially, it's going to be burnt regardless. It might, might be burned in a more contained way if done commercially, but chances are high that they sell off the contract to dispose of it to the lowest bidder, and it then gets disposed of in a similar way as how China and other countries did that the US sold the recycling contract to for plastic. i.e. in the cheapest most non recyclable way. In this case, burned in an open field or some other similar outcome.

    I prefer to salvage hardwood limbs and small trees that are knocked down by wind storms and leaning against a neighboring standing tree. Use the skill saw to cut them to 5 foot lengths to throw in my car. I spot them as I drive home in the Spring and Fall when the foliage is light but not too cold out. Pallets are often pine and I imagine many are treated when chemicals, I would personally not burn with them.

      Don’t know it’s released by burning or in pallets, but some lumbar is treated with arsenic to prevent pests and environmental damage.
      There have been cases of DIYers giving themselves arsenic poisoning by cutting arsenic wood indoors without a respirator. One was a couple doing their own home remodeling, and then wife became very sick, eventually found to be arsenic, and the husband was suspected, but he also had very high arsenic levels. An Occupational Medicine doctor saw the story on the news and called the police to say it was likely from the wood, and that this can happen.

You pay for something that either allows you to be on the road or be within housing laws, etc, but every time that you actually NEED to use that insurance for damages caused by either you or someone else, unless you have the most expensive insurance plan with all the bells and whistles, they will fight you tooth and nail on it and leave you struggling while waiting on the claim approval, and then you have to lawyer up which even in a "you pay only if we win" clause still takes away money from you that's yours, and if you don't lawyer up, the insurance company will often deliberately stretch it out according to whatever is cheapest for them while you're struggling to just scrape by financially.

    I hated getting up in the middle of the night to put wood in our wood stove. And even though it was inspected and safe, I never got used to having a fire in my house. It's amazing how safe modern wood stoves are when properly installed to specification. I put flammables under and touching my stove all the time even while I sleep and nothing ever even smolders. I'm not saying that I'd recommend it, just that I tested it so you don't have to. I was considering the same thing, however, I first calculated the time spent finding pallets on the internet, the spent spent driving to the place, time spent loading the pallets, time spent driving back, time spent breaking the pallets down and cutting them to size, time spent putting wood in the furnace, time spent cleaning out the furnace.............estimated at over 5 hours a week or 20 hours a month. If a person makes $20 per hour, then the break even point would be $400. My electric bill is $250 and all I do is put in a little overtime at work........then I have so much MORE free time. TIME EQUALS MONEY. Your NOT saving as much money as you think because you are spending your life gathering stuff.
    If you're making $10 per hour at your job, then it might be worth it. Or if you guys are broke.
    Would this be worth it for a mechanic who makes $100 per hour?
    Wouldn't it more proficient for him to just work at his job a few hours more per month. Or, spend tons of time on pallets?
    Read a book on money and time........your life will be changed!!!

If too many people seek something out that's free or even cheap, supply vs demand kicks in and eventually someone thinks "say, can we make money(or more money) from this?" and then it all goes to crap for everyone in need that did and does have self-control.

    First, your stove is a cheap model that lacks a catalytic converter thus 50% of your burnable gas is escaping out your chimney, coating your chimney with tar, and polluting the air. Second, your stove is a metal box, when it should have the exterior of the stove covered in stone to absorb and store the radiant heat. Check out swedish stoves, or check out Woodstock Soapstone Stoves for proper design. Lastly the fuel you use (pallet wood) is likely the worst fuel you could choose as it has high tar and low BTU. Purchasing aged hardwood has an upfront cost, but reduces the cost of chimney cleaning and the potential hazards of chimney fires not to mention aged hardwood burns longer and hotter, an overall savings.

Also I use sand in a metalică box to heat my garage another 5 hours after the materials was finished ( I put more kg of sand into a metalic box and introduce in my stove ) .

    That's still a joke in the American way, to have gas fireplaces, in France that doesn't exist, well yes, but they are boilers so you don't put them in decoration in your living room.
    The best heating system is wood, I agree with you.
    The house where I grew up in France and the one where my parents currently live was and is equipped with an insert fireplace, which is in fact a kind of wood stove, built-in, cast iron.
    When it is 2°c outside they have 25°c in the living room and 22°c on average in the rest of their house, however very well insulated, walls, attic and basement as well as window and door leading to the outside aluminum double glazing.
    Afterwards, there is still a downside, not all woods are equal in terms of combustion speed and heat release.
    And that's without taking into account the fact that certain types of wood will foul the pipes to death, requiring more regular sweeping of the latter; with at the top of the list, softwoods.
    And precisely, your pallet wood, is generally made with softwood, spruce, Douglas fir or pine, so it burns like gasoline because of the particular sap that these woods contain and it does not give off only very limited intensive heat over time.
    So you will consume large quantities of wood, for a fairly limited length of heating time and even if you can find it for free, it is not profitable.
    The good wood to burn will be green or white oak, olive tree, beech and driftwood, which you find on the beaches at the exit of the mouths of rivers, after heavy rains or equinox tides, which can be like your pallet wood, harvested for free.

    • @jimwei4life
      @jimwei4life ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Sure, it does take work to cut up FREE pallets, but at least you will be saving money. They said that their heating bill could easily reach $500 this year. In a little over a month, the stove would have already paid for itself. By that point, you could purchase firewood if you wanted to, but that defeats the purpose. I have seen piles of free chopped up firewood on FaceBook Marketplace. I would get a whole lot of wood for free from the places that they mentioned in the video and stockpile it for the rest of the winter.

    • @jimwei4life
      @jimwei4life ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Sir_Viver You can do all the cutting in a month so that you have it ready for a whole year. That will barely cost anything. The blower does not have to be used, but it does help to warm up your home faster. My home gets hot very quickly, and I usually have to turn off the blower so that I can cool down. Sometimes I don't even use the blower. They said they could easily reach up to $500 a month on electricity. That means they would pay off their stove in a little over a month. Then, in less than a month, they would have paid off any other electricity used to cut up wood or use the blower. From that point on, they are only saving money, not losing it.
