I have a feeling that right now, there are editors at Penguin fighting off the temptation of publishing a Penguin Classics edition of the greatest Batman stories that feature The Penguin.

I doubt they could, Marvel recently moved from the comic distributer Diamond to Penguin Random House for distribution while DC moved to Lunar

That volume looked good. You're absolutely right about Jim steranko, though I am a fan of his.

Those Jack and Stan Cap issues have a special place in my heart, they were some of the first Marvel comics I read (in UK reprint issues) back in the mid 70's. Another excellent review Michael. 👍

I imagine the cap return will be in the Avengers volume and they didn’t plan to make enough to double dip.

This is so cool. I’ve never seen these. I love the movies but I’ve never read the comics. I started thinking about which to buy first before even finishing your video.

That's a very nice anthology. I didn't know Penguin was doing these, either. The irony of Penguin classic versions of material that I was told would rot my brain and render me unable to appreciate either true literature or art.

Wow, this is very cool. I had no idea they made these. The book looks beautiful… thanks for showcasing the inside. I can’t imagine I won’t end up picking up at least one of these… maybe Spider-Man or X-men.

Wow, these sound lovely! I have no comic book collections and would be tempted to get the anthology for Spiderman. I have happy memories of reading my uncle's Spiderman comics in my early teens.

you must read a bunch of the mid to late 60s spiderman, fantastic four. those were clearly the best. you can get black and white anthologies, but dont. color is so important. good luck. its a hard job to detail the cream of marvel from 61-present, but someone has done it somewhere. hope you get these.

I bought the Cap one as well. It collects some great material from the 60s. I was hoping they would reprint some of the brief 50s Cap when they tried to bring the character back with Romita on art when he had a more Caniff inspired style. They mention it but don’t reprint the issues. But Kirby, Steranko is still great.

I remember this solicited in Previews but passed since happy with versions I already own. Honestly happy with my Essential black n white reprints when it comes to Marvel stuff even if to most it looks like a collection of coloring books.
Seems priced well with what they charge for hardcovers of new original gn and recent 5 to 6 issue runs. A typical Marvel Masterworks is more costly and have less pages. Hard to tell though if they are priced at an intro price for the first three books since don't recall seeing any solicits yet for other collections.
Greatest hits collections you don't have to worry about filler issues or them not finishing a publications full run. Even though these only came out a few weeks ago if you are seriously thinking about them you may not want to wait. For those who don't follow the comic market; hardcovers seem to go out of print rather fast. Especially with the paper and other supply issues at the moment.

You aren’t wrong about how fast this could go out of print. It’s a solid collection but I prefer the Epic Collections because of their completeness.

If I remember correctly the artwork on that Captain America Silver Age re-intro story from Avengers #4 wasn't nearly as good as the stuff that Kirby and Steranko did. Maybe that's why it was not included in this collection.

you do a special penguin books show!!!! a true book fanatic i see. ah the storied history of penguin. now, there are other great publishing houses of fantastic literature. i actually know their output better. bantam corgi ballantine del rey arkham etc. but penguin is very special. one of the first paperback publishers, prior to mass market books.

  • @mercurywoodrose

how in gods name will they do this for spidey and FF? hell, issues 1-100 of ff and their annuals are all one giant complete epic. spidey is mostly good from 1-150 at least. xman could be done in one volume, but it had 4 great teams on it, with artists kirby, adams, cockrum and byrne. hell, we had perez and byrne on ff later!! spidey had ditko, romita, GIL KANE (who i know you love, he did john carter!!), ross andru and later that stringy guy. good luck penguin classics.

I'll posit the theory that the exclusion of the entire Avengers issue has something to do with Disney. But, you know, I'm kind of suspicious that way. I bought all three in the paperback editions. They're quite nice, although I'm not sure the paper and color reproduction are quite as striking as they seem to be in the hardcover. Very fun, if weird, additions to the PC.

ok gotta ask the crass question==how much/what does this book cost plus how many pages/how many comics worth of stories are in this book

Fascinating I remember the push back against Ian Fleming being published as a penguin modern classic! I wonder how these will be received. If they are publishing super heroes comics as classics though, superman and batman should really come first or does Disney own penguin now?

The paperback edition is actually quite cheap ! Steranko pumping up his own tyres, he's obviously not an American right ? 🤣 The missing story is bait to buy the Penguin Avengers edition (when it's eventually published) I would guess.

All that introduction you read sounded like a bunch of mumbo jumbo. Just let Captain America speak for himself in the pages of the comics. He will tell you who he is, no matter the era or time. The goal is to stay true to these heroes.
