    It is amazing how they matched the “modern era” grave markers with the old. And check out that great table top marker!

    Judith is depicted with the severed head, too involved to fully explain here. But Judith was a rich widow and is depicted as naked because she used her beauty to lure Holofernes into her home to get him drunk so she could cut his head off.
    The owl is a nod to Athena.
    Why those were combined I have no idea.
    The inscription "We are such stuff as dreams are made on; and our little life is rounded with a sleep." - is William Shakespeare the Tempest.

    • @dreamseer7
      @dreamseer7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I think Judith was raped by Holofernes, and this was a revenge. Check me on this. But this is a nod to the artist Artemesia Gentileschi? She had a famous painting Judith/Holofernes. Not sure of exact title.

      So why would someone choose such a violent statue for the grave? Apologies, I'm not familiar anymore with Shakespeare.

    ‘We are such stuff / As dreams are made on, and our little life / Is rounded with a sleep.’ These lines appear in Shakespeare’s The Tempest, in one of Prospero’s most famous speeches (‘Our revels now are ended’).

    Curiosity got the best of me about Miss Nettie's headstone. . .I looked up the company, Muldoon and Co, Lousiville, KY. It appears they started in 1854 and are still in business to this day. . .I wonder if her headstone was one of the first they made. . .? That would have been a long journey for the headstone. . .thanks for the walk through history Robert. . .

    Aaron Lane Ford was a lawyer and congressman from Mississippi, hence the grand stonework. She is Gertrude McDonald (Castellow) Ford. Bryant T Castellow is her father. Bryant was also a lawyer and Gertrude's father George McDonald was the president of a bank. Well off family!

      As what I guess I'm called a "yankee" from South Dakota, I do appreciate the respect shown to fallen CSA. As a history buff, I believe these men not to be traitors but very loyal to fight and give their lives for what they believed in wholeheartedly. I especially love the old cemetaries and the sincere excitement "OR" and Mrs show! Every grave is a piece of history with each person having a story to tell. Plus I'm learning so much about Georgia! It saddens me to see how time is reclaiming some graves and it amazes me at the fancy work on headstones in the mid 1800s. False tombs are new to me and I still am unclear why. But the ones you find where the family plots are walled off by stones that I can only presume each stone had to be found, carried and placed by hand and in such as way to create a stable wall is amazing! I do hope that the cemeteries you find are being documented and that some group such as Boy Scouts or DAR or Daughters of the Confederacy, etc will take it upon themselves to clean them and maintain them going forward. Lastly, when you show so many in one place that passed away around 1880s, I wonder if they fell victim to yellow spotted fever. Anyway, THANK YOU for continuing to do this and with such genuine care!

    The Ford monument is a copy of Michelangelo’s Night, but it’s an unmistakable presence just inside the entrance to historic Rosedale Cemetery. It’s one of the finest examples of anonymous public art to be found in Georgia.
    The allegorical sculpture was originally created for the tomb of Giuliano de’Medici in Florence and is considered one of Michelangelo’s most important commissions.
    So…I would assume the monument inscription (sleep) refers to night.

  • @karanpittman6271
    @karanpittman6271 ปีที่แล้ว +20

    The statue is Italian marble - Michelangelo's "Night". Gertrude Castellow Ford commissioned it. She was committed to the idea that Shakespeare was Edward DeVere, and I believe she wrote three books on this possibility. Bryant T. Castellow, her father, was a US Representative or Senator (I need to check), and that is how she met Aaron Ford from Mississippi. You did a great job with your video!

    Robert, you really need a good flashlight and keep in the golve compartment of your car or van or truck, so you always have it. Keep a brush and a part of gloves as well, in a small container in the back as well.. if nothing else, can get some cheep gloves and a soft brush just aobut anywhere, and keep several of them in whatever car you drive, this way you never forget. just saying. God bless you and your wife both. Wait to see more of this cemetery.

    I looked up that stone mason in KY. I think that company is still in business under Muldoon Memorials if it's the same company. It looks like they carved many marble memorials during the 19th and 20th century if I'm not mistaken. Someone can look it up.

    Hi there…don’t know if it’s relevant but the Greek Goddess of Wisdom Athena has an Owl with her…Goddess of wisdom and military strategy! The naked lady grave…I couldn’t see the name,date or occupation of person buried there but thought I’d mention. I love Owl and all raptors so my ears pricked up at the mention of an owl, and I have a little brass owl Athena I brought back from a visit to Athens, Greece, which is where Athena is linked.
    Thankyoi for sharing your knowledge and taking us in such interesting visits! Warmest wishes from U.K. 🙋‍♀️👏🏻👏🏻💕🥰🦋🦋🦋🦉🦉🦉

    A depiction of a woman nude is sometimes a symbol of truth and purity, the owls are considered messengers of death. In death the soul is nude, it is pure of the corruptions of mortal flesh.
