FAQ: Why is the shelter located in a natural drainage? Won't it get flooded in case of heavy rain? No. What may look like a wash or natural drainage actually is the result of a former small sand mining site and dirt and stones being dumped in the pits afterwards, creating these small hills and indentations on/in the slight natural slope. - How does it perform in the rain? Though not filming much of it, i put a layer of stones between the logs and the dirt as a drainage. It works pretty well so far, the shelter is dry. I plan on digging a trench on the backside of the shelter and uphill to divert any runoff. - What about a fireplace and/ or stove? I plan on adding some kind of fireplace, maybe even a clay/ stone/ metal furnace inside the shelter. - What is the purpose of the shelter? I don't plan to hunt from it or anything. I built it for the joy of the process, for hanging out, do a bit of bushcrafting and maybe some overnighters in the summer. - Is the shelter on private land? Yes, it is. - How long did it take me to finish this shelter? I started digging in May '17 which took me two months. I only had time on the weekends and finally completed the shelter with the small bench in January 2018. - Did I plan it on my own or did I copy a design elsewhere? I planned it on my own but changed my mind two times in the process. First time while digging, when I decided to rotate the shelter by 90 degrees and therefore had to expand the pit in the back lefthand corner, as you maybe can see in the pictures. The second big change was when I had halfway finished my initial plan but then thought of adding a kind of loft sice I realised the shelter would be quite small otherwise.
I have alot of free time from sun up to sun down i make my own schedule, if i was to start Sunday August 25th and work Sunrise to Sundown, How long do you think it would take to Build something like that?
@@myrtlesyd9451 I understand that, I'm just having a hard time estimating the timeline. I can dig it out in a single day if i start around 5:00 and stop at 22:00 give or take an hour for meals. Then it would be a matter of gathering the wood with my axe the next day. And so on

Nice work dude. My dad and brother built a small cabin in the woods. Took us 2 months. It was 20x20 10 foot center ceiling and 6.5ft around the walls. Used pine and split logs for flat floor. Sealed with oakum. That was in 1965. Went back home to visit friends, still standing today. Our friends grand kids use it as a play house. 50 plus years! You did good young man. Real good.

Good for you man, I'd love to get the time and land to build a good camp shelter like this. I am curious as to what you did about the drainage issue coming from the high ground though?
459 people have obviously never had to live out in the wilderness. To consumed in modern life and take for granted what they have.. I would love to make one like this. Awesome shelter bro, well done 👊👏👍
That's an awful lot of projection and presumption based on a number of thumbs down with no other information. I'm guessing that the vast majority of those voting thumbs up also have never had to live out in the wilderness and are consumed by modern life and probably take much of what they have for granted.
Super cool work bro. Turned out nice. Lots of hard work. Bet you enjoyed that and felt great satisfaction when you were done. Probably learned quite a bit as well. Hope you are enjoying your new hideaway. How long in total did that take?
Thank you, you're right. I enjoyed it and learned a lot indeed. It took about a year. I only had time on every other weekend. The digging alone took 2 months
Nice to see you being able to do this and live out on your own in the woods if need be. Most people your age can't use a can opener without needing a safe space. Water run off is a huge thing so try routing water flow away from and around the dug out. Good job so far.

She found a blow down tree with a huge root ball that made the nice beginnings of a home like you made here. The story told of all the ways she survived there for a few years before finding her way home. I always wanted to build a home like hers. Never did but I did build a few nice camps in the mountains and hills. around my home. Best to you and may you continue having fun in the outdoors.
so impressive, i have always wanted to build a natural permanent shelter/ campsite like this. i just love being
outdoors.
the little bend on your shovel is for your foot, will save you alot of energy :P
I did use my foot on the shovel but unfortunately did not put a single clip of it in the video :D
Great little shelter!
Good for you man, I'd love to get the time and land to build a good camp shelter like this. I am curious as to what you did about the drainage issue coming from the high ground though?
Perfect build man 👍, I like that bed over the ground of shelter👍👍👍.
I Wish that where i live had such great places for shelter building!
Brilliant!!!! So good to see youth experiencing it's time the way youth's time was made to be spent!!😎👍👍👍😎
Not bad for a 15 year old. Way to get out into nature and do something !
Nice man. That will come in handy when Armageddon happens, lol. Seriously though, that takes a lot of skill. It's like a form of artwork.
It is
You did great. Don’t let people talk to you like that do what you want and you did good bro
This looks pretty cool man. Great work! 👍
This guy is awesome, he was better than many Youngsters
@Eric Agius lmao
That is a lot of work. I needed to start this 3 year's ago. I'm tired I'm going to take a nap.
@@JustRandomPfusch a year? You did everything on your own right?
Yes, that's right
Nice build. Thanks for taking the time to share.
Beautiful ! Great job thank you for sharing.
Awesome dugout shelter! 👍
Haters gonna hate, did this on his own
WOW...this is amazing...awesome details...love this, it will come in handy for sure so thanx for the idea
Nice to see you being able to do this and live out on your own in the woods if need be.
Most people your age can't use a can opener without needing a safe space.
Water run off is a huge thing so try routing water flow away from and around the dug out.
Good job so far.
Thank you
Watch at 2x speed... IT'S AMAZING!
This kid has just built something better than my house and I can’t even be bothered to clean my teeth. Awesome video

Excellent work ! Place looks great 👍
