    I worked at Apple Retail in 2004. I CANNOT POSSIBLY OVERSTATE how popular these were. We literally COULD NOT KEEP THEM on the shelves. I would work the telephone sometimes and it was a constant stream of calls of people wanting to know if we had some and when we were getting more ("They come randomly and we have no idea, try tomorrow?"). Especially the green ones. If I had to pinpoint a moment where Apple's popularity went white-hot, I would argue it was not the iPhone, but the iPod Mini. That success paved the way for people to actually want an "iPhone" back when that was just a made-up term by bloggers and fanbois.

      The numbers support your claims, this is when Apple's profits (and hence, their stock) REALLY started to rocket up. Brand recognition, market share, everything started to jump up. The halo effect and brand recognition and foot traffic / web traffic the iPod mini brought boosted sales of Apple's other products (at the time, macs) as well. And just the following year they released the nano which was basically superior in every way and was an instant hit as well.
      The rest is history.

      @spacescout87 Minis didn't need to charge with FW, that was a previous gen limitation. He actually told us this in the video with the Apple keynote onscreen. However, I'm assuming the 12v charging of firewire was necessary to wake this one up after 19 years of battery running down!

    I think the thing about like jeans changing over time is that the anodization has a tendency to discolor over time. I say that because I picked up a used green gen 2 recently and where the previous owner had it in a belt clip its kind of almost yellowish green instead. I don't see this on my gray gen 1 though. I wonder if also they wanted to account for the fact that wear and tear/drops are going to take the coating off, esp because every ipod to that point had a stainless back that always looked the same color even though it was scratched

    I once installed a stripped-down Tiger installation (1.9 GB) onto a 4 GB iPod Mini. It worked but naturally ran rather hot but was able to boot a 600 MHz G3 iMac. This worked because it was available with Firewire 400 as well as USB 2 30-pin cables.

    I loved my silver iPod mini. Was my first iPod and I crammed it to the brim with all my albums, tapes etc. it was such a beautiful object to own. The way it’s edges were flat and you could just stand it up on a table. Towards the end of its life I replaced the battery which was really difficult, and it was never really the same after that. Bought a 30gb iPod after. I’ve still got them and they still work, albeit the battery is screwed - I haven’t the heart to recycle them.

    As an original owner of a still working iPod 4g Photo from 2004 I have to admit two things: first, the foam pads for the headphones were standard back then and second the iPods are still supported by at least Monterey, I believe.

    Install Software for an Apple Device from a CD. That makes me feel OLD 🤣😂🤣I honestly miss Ipods. My very first one was one of the Ipod Shuffles that was the size of today's USB Flash Thumb Drives & according to Apple it could hold 150 songs but I got closer to 200. I still wish that they made Ipods with more storage. I have an over 4,000 song music collection (not all of which is in the cloud) & I listen to music so much that the battery drain increases like after 3-4 years. This is why I thankful for the creation of wireless headphones/earbuds that way I can carry a MacBook with me on the go & still listen to my music.

    Very nice. I bought an iPod Mini in this same color way back in 2004. I was about to move to Germany and I wanted to bring my music library with me and thought an iPod would be a great investment.
    It really was. I traveled all around Germany and Europe with that iPod, and it served me well for over a year. That belt clip was a lifesaver in a few situations in that it kept the iPod from falling out of my hands when I was on a train platform or when someone bumped into me. Plus it made the iPod easier to grip in general.

    Really nice to view this, was my first ever iPod at the ripe old age of 15. Saved along time for it, and then it broke after just 3 months of use! Thankfully I got a refund exchange and ended up with the 2nd gen iPod Mini with upgraded 6gb of storage instead of original 4gb! I used the belt clip too until I realised it wasn't the coolest of accessories...

    • @GuillermoPaulman
      @GuillermoPaulman ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think the belt clip wasn't just cool, it was very practical. I had iPod clipped to my belt most of the time, it was really convenient.
      Now when I listen to music on my iPhone, I miss the comfort of changing the volume or skipping the song just by touching the click wheel, ratherr than looking at the screen and pressing some button on it.

    Hey Luke, I think this is the most I’ve seen you nerd out in a video 😂. I’m 61 and usually an early adopter of tech but when the iPod came out, it took me a few years to adopt it. I used to bike to work and I would rather carry 3 or 4 CD’s in my messenger bag and usually 1 book and a bike magazine. I eventually did get an iPod with a gazillion gigs of memory in the late oughts (I got the one you could watch videos on). But eventually I replaced all that with an iPhone and iPad.

    This was my first Apple product and I was smitten. I was deployed to Kuwait at the time and it took me a month and a half to get and when I opened it I was amazed at how gorgeously lime green it was. This IPod broke my heart I bought the green one when I was in college. And it froze on me. Now at that time searching for fixes on Google wasn’t a thing. So had to bring it back and could only the grey one to replace it. Was gutted but went with it. A year later same thing happened and that stage managed to find out if I’d have done a soft reset holding enter and up together would have solved the broken. Was pure gutted coz the green was just sooo much nicer then the grey. But it really was an awesome iPod and unboxing experience too.:)
