I've never posted a video in the afternoon in my life! But I have so many I want to post so I'm just going to get them all out. This is getting really fun!
I never met Grant, but look at how many people he's helped with these videos to get off of couches and gaming chairs and actually do something worthwhile. I knew how to make large batches of charcoal with clay mounds, but not small batches for little projects. This video popped up in my feed when it first was published and I've been using it to make 3lb batches of black powder with each paint bucket full, all thanks to Grant. I haven't bought any black powder in several years thanks to this - only substitutes for when I don't want to shoot anything corrosive through a hard to clean gun like a lever action. I've taken game and done French and Indian War reenactments and gotten Native American and non Native kids interested in their history with the black powder made with this charcoal method coupled with my trusty musket. Thanks, Grant. I know that you're enjoying this next adventure.

I saw this video and decided to make charcoal on a bigger scale. I got a big can and I used a bunch of wood I had from collecting firewood. I cut it up into smaller charcoal sized pieces and "cooked" it. I now have beautiful charcoal for the next time I cook. This video was awesome. Thanks. I appreciate it. I go through so much charcoal because I grill a lot. This video saved me hundreds of dollars. Easily.
It's charcoal not coal. Coal is made out of carbon which diamonds are aswell made up of. Diamonds are super compressed heated carbon. And a hydraulic press wouldn't be able to do it, you'd require several million tons.
+Jamaal Jones yyour right but charcoal and coal have different properties the only similarities is that is can be use a fuel for burning and its black :p
Miss you dude. Just putting this out there for those why use various methods of producing charcoal. Its very well done roasted wood. So can use as described here or digging a hole, building a fire, and covering it again..... Its roasting. These videos were awesome. Will never be the same.
I hope to see you make some black powder! I´ve done it myself and I found out that charcoal made out of soft wood (such as balsa) will result with a better black powder. Maby you can try different types of wood and compare them ;-)
Clear glass - I don't think so. Well, it would maybe break after some time because of teperature difference. And it won't be instant effect. If liquid nitrogen would heat, it would just boil a little more intensive, but created mist would disperse the light more effectively. The other thing is that liquid nitrogen and dry ice would only boil/evaporate heated, producing some mist, so - nothing very impressive. (however, if you would close them in container and then heat it would "explode" because of pressure). Anyway, hey, I said "presumably". I didn't say it's bad idea to try. I would be very happy to see that I'm wrong. =D
During WWII the federal govt distributed literature which described how to convert gasoline powered engines to burn that wood gas through the process of gassificiation. Was basically a 55 gallon drum with a vent that went to your carburetor you filled with wood and biomass, and put that inside of a bonfire. Was designed so farmers could still farm with tractors if there was a shortage of fuel. Could also run low horsepower vehicles, even some pickup trucks of the day.
Is there a video of this? I would like to see a scale model run off of this wood gas. I can imagine alot of explosions happening if I attempted this idea.

You can also use cloth and string to create something called char-cloth which we mountain people like to use when camping/hunting. It's amazingly flammable, even compared to its non-chared counterparts, and really handy to start a fire with.
Whats the difference between this and just normally burning wood? Is it that the wood in the can doesn't catch fire? If so what does that do for the wood?
thanks grant, that is a really good way to make charcoal, when i make black powder, i usually just get a piece of charcoal and sand it to get powdered charcoal ;)
Grant Thompson - "The King of Random" I really wish I did, when I researched it a few months ago I learned there are 2 basic methods to activate it, high heat steam or using acid + very high heat then washing it to remove the acid. radical
I could make a bomb out of a roll of toilet paper and a stick of TNT
That's easy. You can make nitric acid out of the drain cleaner and cold packs, and paint thinner is toluene, which can be nitrated.
Making the acid is easy. Separating it from the other crap isn't.
