With just four rounds of the Serie A season remaining, Cagliari still sit uncomfortably close to the relegation zone. The Islanders boast a three-point buffer to the drop zone pre-round, but despite a 3-0 defeat to Genoa at the weekend, Claudio Ranieri’s men are in better form than most of their rivals having lost just two of their last ten league outings (W3, D5).
Their home record looks even better with Cagliari currently on a five-match unbeaten streak at the Unipol Domus (W2, D3), while only Torino and Lazio have beaten them there in Serie A since early October (W6, D5). Three quarters of their points haul to date has been earned in front of their own fans (24/32), and there’s every chance of that getting even better given that they’ve only ever lost one top-flight home H2H against Lecce.
The visitors find themselves within touching distance of preserving their Serie A status after an impressive run of just one defeat from six league outings (W3, D2). Lecce sit seven points clear of the dotted line, and could secure their future in the division this weekend with a win, and if results elsewhere go their way.
Priceless points on the road have helped propel Luca Gotti’s men up the table, with the only defeat from their last four league away matches coming at the San Siro against AC Milan (W2, D1). This clash looks set to be tense however, as both have netted 61% of their Serie A goals this season beyond the 60th minute, so late drama could well be on the cards.
Players to watch: Cagliari forward Eldor Shomurodov may be the man to continue that trend as each of his last eight club goals came after half-time, including all three of his strikes for the Islanders. Lecce have avoided defeat each time Rémi Oudin has directly contributed to a goal this season (W3, D2), including assisting his side’s strike in the reverse fixture (1-1).
Hot stat: The home side on the day has failed to win any of the last six H2Hs.
