American Reacts to Bjørn Dæhlie | Norway's Greatest Skier

As an American I don't know anything about skiing or Norwegian athletes. Today I am very interested in learning about one of Norway's most famous athletes and skiers Bjørn Dæhlie. If you enjoyed the video feel free to leave a comment, like, or subscribe for more!

The other person in the photo finish race was Vladimir Smirnov, an athlete from Kazakhstan. He was really good, and he won multiple races against both Bjørn, and other Norwegian athletes. Even though he snatched the gold from Norway on multiple occasions, he was/is extremely popular here, and he is fondly referred to as "Smirre" (a spin on his last name). When he won the 50 km race during the Olympics in Norway in 1994, he was cheered on by the Norwegian crowd as if he was one our athletes. There were even spontaneous singing of the celebratory song "Seiern er vår" (victory is ours), but the lyrics was changed to "Smirre er vår" (Smirre is ours). He even commented after the race that it was as if he was part of the Norwegian national team.
In the following years Smirre featured on a show called "Gutta på tur", where Børn Dæhlie, Vegard Ulvang (skier), Arne Brimi (renowned chef), and Arne Hjeltnes (host) went on hikes/hunted/cooked, while reminiscing about their glory days. Smirre spoke Swedish, so he understood Norwegian fairly well, to the point where they could communicate in Norwegian/Swedish. To this day Smirre is considered a close friend of Norway, and a lot of us have a really soft spot for him.
Tyler, as someone else said. Next you should react to Marit Bjørgen, the female equivalent to Bjørn Dæhlie. At her peak, there were people that doubted she was human. She was that much better than anyone else. She didn't get real competition until the later years of her career when another Norwegian skier named Therese Johaug appeared.

Bjørn was a amazing skier, and as a human.He had a Tv serie with other famous Norwegian, and they did go fishing, hunting, but most of all it was the social connection with one of the best chef in Norway. A programe host, that we all love, and his Norwegian friend and skier that he did fight with. They invited friends, Primeminister, The King and made TV programs in the 90-00 that i still look at. Bjørn was a joy to watch, and a special man who did find his good life after all the year of competition.
I remember when bjørn Dæhlie competed.he was a monster in the tracks.

This is an old video, because Marit Bjørgen is the most winning cross country skier ever with in total 41 medals. She’s also the most winning winter olympier with 15 medals 👍❤️

Marit isn't male, and Ole Einar wasn't a cross-country skier. The Wikipedia article about Bjørn Dæhlie specifically states he's the most successful male cross-country skier in history.
He's actually number 4 of most winning winter olympier, number 3 is a Dutch speed skater.

Northug was nothing compared to Dæhlie. He had an insane physical ability, but he wasn't as strong in the head as Dæhlie. Dæhlie was much more focused on his craft, while Northug was easilly distracted by things around him, parties, and hubris.

Yes, but as the American got right on the first try, the difference was in the final plunge. If Smirnov had done that too, then he would probably have won. So he can blame it on shoes all he wants, but it was his own fault. :)
@@jeschinstad I think he meant it as a joke. Smirnov was a through and through professional. He never made excuses. He did the work and if he lost, he did so graceously.

Norway still have the greatest cross country skiers in the world and in early 2025 the world championship will be in Trondheim. I suggest you do a live and watch either the 50km or the replay. Those are the biggest events. Also watch Marit Bjørgen!
The sad thing is that other countries seems to have pretty much given up on crossroad skiing after Covid. So there isn't much competition for Norway anymore. The Swedes hang in there, but other than them, the situation for the sport is grim.
Bjørn was King, however Marit Bjørgen is a Goddess and from what I understand has the most Wins of all time. Will someone ever best her records

Cross-country competitions are great fun to watch. So much can happen along the way, with hills up and down. Some are good climbers, others are good downhillers. Some have good glide, others not so much. The Norwegian national team has put great effort into breaking all the codes, taking care of the talents, training, ski wax, technique, equipment and of course the most important thing - enjoyment of skiing from a young age.
Dæhlie had that insane capability to ignore his pain limits and just keep going literally until he was no more capable of standing on his feet. Several times he colapsed after the finishline and laid in the snow for ten to fifteen minutes, before he managed to get back on his feet.

As a norwegian, I have to appreciate our friends from Sweden, who have given us such a great fight for the medals. Edy Sixten Jernberg, Thomas Wassberg, Gunde Svan and Charlotte Kalla. You are forever in our hearts.
I've talked with him, he is a genuine and very nice man 👌 Fun fact:Bjørn translate to bear 🐻 in English. And that's a good description of his strength i think ❤

The photeo-finish is mesured at the tip of the boot, not the tip of the ski.. to be even more presise, its mesured 20 cm up the leg from the tip of the boot crossing the line first.

And I know of 2 cases where the finish was even closer then this.
One was with Thomas Gustavsom a swede, the only cross-contry race in FIS-history where they mesured in undreds of secunds (they only did that once..) if its closer then tens of secunds now, its a shared place..
The other was the EPIC relay race, where Oddvar Brå broke his staff, and fought a russian to a photofinish that i think was even closer the this. (Norway won that as well 😊)
That was Thomas Wassberg, who beat Juha Mieto by 1/100 of a second in the Olympic 15km in 1980. Tomas Gustafsson was a speed skater.
Yes, at this race it was measured 20 cm up the leg but because of this finish, they changed the rules going forward so that it is the tip of the boot that counts because that is much easier to determine than a point 20 cm up.
I recall one of the events in Salt Lake. Two Norwegians competing for second (at the time... gold winner was disqualified).
It was ruled to be a draw between them.
I haven't found a good replay of this. As I recall it, the two of them starting sprinting to the finish (from 9th and 4th maybe), while the rest around them just seemed deflated by the sight. Saving energy for the final sprint to the finish is a classic tactic for Norway.
Edit: I had to make sure it was the right OL. And I can also add that it was the 10km Pursuit Men. Norway is listed with 2 Golds medals.

When you noticed so many Norwegian flags, that was the 1994 olympics that was hosted in Lillehammer, Norway. You should totally look into that Olympic.
Oh btw, not only is he a champion but also known to be a very humble and nice guy. Like Ole Gunnar Solskjær. Also a legend. (Within Football)
I took a year of education in "sports". I maxed out at 65 in VO2 max. But we had this cross country skier in our group. At the age of 20 he passed 90. And I have an over average amount of hemoglobin in my blood. Those people have EXTREME stamina!! :)
Talking about close races, I remember in one olympics at the 50 km race, a guy from finland and a guy from sewden where less than 1/100th of a second between them, but the sweed won because he was a few 1/1000 of a seconds faster. This was a race that took over 2 hours to run and the difference was measured in milliseonds. I felt bad for the guy from finland in that race. They really should have given them a joint gold medal for that. I should also mention that in this race of 50km they took the time and winner was who ran on shortest time, so the swede and the fin came in at different times since they started on different times and yet the difference was in milliseconds. In distance that is less than the width of your finger on a race that took more than 2 hours to complete.
My ever living memory was the two weeks the Lillehammer Olympics was held. We all went to school, watched olympics all day there, then went home and did the same. For 14 days. No school work or home work at all. I'm Norwegian btw.
When you see these very close finishes, like between Bjørn and Smirnof, they have started at the same time or with time interintervales from earlier races. The last one is when they start with set intervals and it's the time they use that counts. :)
Maybe I am a little late in the comments, but if nobody else have said this then you should know that there are two ways to start a cross country race. This can give you a truer perspective on why cross country skiers often finish alone over the finish line. 1. The traditional "intervalstart" and the 2. Later addition of "fellesstart". Interval-start, means that each contestant start with usually 30 seconds between them. This is the traditional way because ski track preparation did not use to be so advanced as it is today, so in order for the contestants to not stomp on each others skis, with complications with passing each other, maybe part of the race have single file, you time each contestant starting with 30 seconds intervals, and subract the difference at the finish. The result of this is that often you will se only a contestant and the clock he is racing against. When the contestant is on the final stretch and the race is close, the main focus is to follow the matching times on the bottom of the screen. Without understanding interval start it may be very confusing what is going on. The newer "fellesstart" (joint start) means all skiers start at the same time in positions that are either drawn arbitrary, or decided by a previous race, like in motorsports. This type of that require a large and wide start areas before the contestants are gradually funneled into fewer and fewer tracks and after a short while there are only 2 or 3 tracks for most of the race. To accomodate for races with many evenly matched races it is also common to provide more tracks on the final stretch, so that every contestant can find a track side by side to each other for the final push. The final stretch is also then often made relatively long and straight so that everbody has some time to get up to max speed before the finish line. Joint start is concidered more TV friendly format especially for drawing new interest, while interval start has a special place in our hearts because this is what we have all experienced as children in small clubs without the machinery to prepare the tracks needed for joint start. It is two different experiences to watch joint start races and interval races. The latter is for connoseurs, and require more of your imagination to keep tabs on what is going on at any given moment. Then it is always the clock that orients you, and the different times on the screen teels you the relative time between the contestants.
While admiring Bjørn Dahlie, it may be good to know that he had close matching from several norwegians and people from other nations. Smirnow is from Kasakstan, and he is beloved in Norway for the matching he gave both Bjørn and other norwegians. He also sometimes trained with the norwegian team, and became close friends with many of them. We tend to adopt every foreigner that are able to keep a high level over time, and give us good matching and exciting races. In later years the russians have been our hardest competitors, but since they have not participated the last couple of years, the norwegian domination have reached an almost embarrassing level. Some races last year, norwegans filled all 10 spots on the result listings on cross country for men, but on the womens side it has been much more exciting. Norwegians care most when there is national glory to win, and watching 10 norwegians fight each other has much less appeal. So now there are even serious debates about if Norway should willingly share all our expertise about skiing. This is not really charity, but rather a strategic move, because the sports gets it monetary value from how many is watching.
On the womens side Norway can hardly be concidered superior at this time, but that makes it so much more interesting for norwegians to watch it. Especially our most beloved enemy is now doing great, the swedish, and that brings every norwegian to the live broadcast. Taking an interest in cross country skiing is one of the easiest ways to bond with norwegians in general at a larger scale.

They run the lastcouple of minutes anaerobic, meaning they use more oxygen than the body can take up. So the ones fitghting for medals, often takes out everything and some more to simply let go and fall after the finish. Dæhlie was known to be able to pressure himself to the extreme.

Yes Tyler. The last one you saw aginst the sweed. Dæhlie was not moving....just down...dead a long time a long long long time. It was scary to watch.
There are several events indeed. They differ by:
1) distance, everything from (even under) 1km (at sprints and junior events) to 50km (or even longer for some "non-competitive" events)
2) style/technique. Classical (skis remain parallell for the most part) and free technique (you can "skate" you skis), or a combination (e.g. two laps classical, two laps free)
3) Mass start (first is winner) vs individual start (fastest time is winner), and chase, a combination of the two where a previous event's results determin the gaps between starters, and the first to finish wins. Sounds a bit same-ey, perhaps, but race tactics varies quite a bit between the different starting methods.
4) Individual competition and relay. (Some times even team competition, where four athletes on one team race together and typically the third of those to finish determins the team's time)
Ski jumping and Nordic Combined (Ski jump before a cross country chase) also falls under the "nordic skiing" umbrella, Dæhlie was only competing in "regular" cross country.
Biathlon (skiing+target shooting) does not (for some reason, I guess it is because "proper" nordic skiing was well established when biathlon emerged), they have their own federation
What really solidified Dæhlie as a legend was not really for winning (sure, it was, but also) for his sportsmanship. In Nagano -98, he insisted on waiting until _everyone_ had finished before he went to the medal seremony. The one guy he waited for, the Kenyan Philip Boit, had quite obviously 0% chance of winning (or finish anywhere else than last or thereabouts, for that matter). Dæhlie stayed in the finishing area until Boit came in, and congratulated him on completing the event, before he went to join the medal seremony. Boit later had a son, which he named Dæhlie Boit.

Yeah collapsing and crying when you cross the finish line is quite common with cross country. They give it their all for hours so their body is DONE with standing when they finish.

Check out the mens 15 km ski race 1980 Winter Olympics 1/100 of a second separated gold and silver. Swedens Thomas Wassberg and Finlands Jhouhan Meito. Also North American cross country skiers Bill Koch, Pierre Harvey, Becky Scott, Sahara Renner, Shandra Crawford, Alex Harvey, Devon Kershaw, Jessie Diggins, and many more on this side of the pond. Two different techniques Classical and Skating. Awesome fitness sport that can be practiced vigorously into the 90s low wear and tear on the body and low joint trauma. Calgary had olympics and has a world class nordic training and racing facility 1 hours drive. American Bill Koch won a silver medal for USA in the olympics 30 km. Mass starts and also time trial starts. Olympic cross country skiers are faster then olympic mountain bikers, course is generally 1/3 uphill, downhill and flat.

"it looks quite fast!" - Well, they average a bit over 15.5mph for 31 miles. London Marathon 2023 winner ran at 13.2mph average but the race was only 26.2 miles long.

I lived in Trondheim in 1997, and was at the "jaktstart" at the WC. Most boring event ever!! Bjørn was like just cruising around half a round in front of everyone else. :D So we just sat there in the snow, drinking Jägermeister. :) And yes I'm old...

Bjørn Dahlie is not at the top anymore. Both Marit Bjørgen and Ole Einar Bjørndalen have more combined olympic and word championship medals.
Marit Bjørgen has 15 olympic and 26 wold championship medals. Bjørndalen is even more crazy with 13 olympic and 45 world championship medals.
