Carbon Fiber Clutch and Valve Cover - First Attempt

  • Hey everyone!
    This was my first attempt doing a carbon fiber cover. As you will see, the valve cover didn't turn out exactly as I had hoped, but I hate wasting materials so I finished it. I will make a new cover in a different way (split mould) in future, and I will fit it to the engine. Stay tuned, and enjoy the video!

    I know this is from 2 years ago. But you could drill a tiny holes or multiple in the mould. Cover the mould surface holes with wax (small amount). Then once cured blow air or water in to the holes to pop the part out.

    Hi, did you have any issues with the resin de laminating from the epoxy gel? Iv thought about doing this buy easy composites always said it won't work.
    And reason you didn't use the uni mould. Coupling coat?

    • @zrcarbon9937
      @zrcarbon9937  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi!
      The reason I used it. It was cheaper, works better in cold environment. It works perfect if you let the gel coat fully dry. Only baked the part at 90 degrees for 8 hours. It was just a test piece 🤟

      @@zrcarbon9937 nice, I made one like that now and took it to 120deg. Was all good. I applied onto tacky gel tho and had a couple of repairs. Will try onto fully cured gel next time.

    I really enjoy these videos. Question : How does carbon fiber hold up to oil, high temperature , and gas ?

    • @zrcarbon9937
      @zrcarbon9937  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hey
      Thanks!
      Carbon fiber the actual material resistant to high temp, petrol, gas. The resins or adhesives are the more sensitive to ethanol and heat. You have to use the right stuff for the job. I’m using prepreg carbon fiber which is resistant to heat up to 130c. Resistant to ethanol but in time the ethanol slowly brakes down the resin. I used petrol resistant clear coat for the protection.
      👍

    So does that wax sheet stay in the mould or does that come out after the fiber glass backing goes on?

  • @tancakar8987

    the only problem is you use unimold system which is up to 90 C but the actually pre peg should be sit on 120 C for 2 hours att he end of the heat cycle. still thought good results. You need 2 parts mould for your engine head cover, as there are some parallel sides. I am assuming the pre peg is not from Easy composites ?

      He used high temp gel coat eg160. Good up to 160c. The normal resin can probably handle oven temp up to 130. It did not cause any issues here. But to be safe he could have used the high temp laminating resin aswell. If he is using 210 twill is probably from easy composites. They are pretty much the only suppliers of xc110 in Europe and UK.
