    The fact they made him gain a new perspective and see how gross he acted is top tier writing, he's still a good person but good people can screw up badly. It's really good for kids to see their hero character become aware of this and genuinely apologize.

    I really felt that Flame Princess was truly allowed to grow as a character after the breakup happened. When she was introduced, she was simply known as "Finn's new love interest who has some emotional instability". However, I like how the writers gave her some real agency after the breakup and she decided to take control of her own life and become her own person that wasn't defined by anyone else. Instead of filling the role that PB left as Finn's love interest and not doing much else, she actually became an intriguing character on her own merits.

    • @_Sage967_

      i still very much ascribe to the notion that had Finn gone to ANYONE besides Jake he wouldn't have ended up abusing FP's trust. Jake doesn't have Jake as a best friend/confidant so he never had this problem despite being objectively worse in comparison to Finn which allowed the part that would help the relationship flourish which is why he has kids and a functioning marriage.
      at least this isnt Ben 10 where the whole situation could've been corrected if Jullie had called literally anyone in Ben's circle and after she breaks up with him she becomes a non-character beyond tongue-in-cheek jokes about their past relationship and being joined with Ship at the hip because honestly they only needed Ship

    • @nathantower5565
      @nathantower5565 2 ปีที่แล้ว +130

      The whole breakup seemed really contrived. The cosmic owl showing up in the dream is what kinda ruins it because as far as the audience and Finn knows at that point it's a prophetic dream. The other Cosmic owl dream warned Finn about Billy's death and so it makes sense Finn would do something about it but the idea to manipulate them into fighting doesn't seem like a realistic thing he would ever think of especially since he doesn't do anything to rig the fight in her favor so it's like he just does it to see if she'll die rather than wait for it to happen. It's like if in Avatar if Sokka instead of being protective of Suki because he got overprotective after losing his last girlfriend he instead tries to egg her into doing dangerous shit cause he wants to see if she'll die. I almost wanna say they had Finn have the insane out of nowhere idea just so they could skip a normal overprotective reaction. There's just too many contrivances for it not to seem like bad writing. If Finn didn't have the prophetic dream that supposed to be some sort of warning it never would have happened, instead of having the most obvious reaction he has some completely backwards idea which doesn't even make sense on its own, instead of just tricking Ice King into the fights he exclusively uses her personal secrets to gaslight her when Ice king would be way easier to trick, Finn doesn't do anything to help guarantee she'll win even though the whole idea should hinge on him wanting her to win. It just plays out like he gets a warning about her possibly dying and psychotically gaslights her into the situation where he thinks she'll die for fun.

    • @kingcyclops4079
      @kingcyclops4079 2 ปีที่แล้ว +161

      @@nathantower5565 I agree that was completely stupid. They really could've just had Finn do just about anything else and it would've been a more realistic break up. Would've been interesting if Finn and Flame Princess rushed the relationship too fast and Flame princess realizes this and Finn being the dumbass he is doesn't see the problem or ignores it. So Flame princess leaves him to figure her life out herself. It doesn't have to be that but yknow anything is better than Finn nearly killing his girlfriend because of a cosmic wet dream.

It would perfectly explain why he goes into the following phase. Such a random thing to share but my dad literally kidnapped me as a child and I didn’t know my family for 8 years - so FP was a massive deal for me. I felt like I related to her massively especially due to the strength of my emotions following my abuse. I’ve also had men try to manipulate me and told them to suck it. Adventure Time was a great show - I’m glad I found it when I did. 😊

    I really don’t like that the Cosmic Owl plays a part in their breakup. We’ve seen consistently throughout the show that the Cosmic Owl is a force to be reckoned with. There’s even an entire episode from the owls perspective on what can happen if he’s present, even during the most mundane dreams. If it had only been Finn contending with his own confusing feelings, the episode would have worked so much better, but the Owl just serves to deprive Finn of agency in this situation.

    • @thewillofabeast9079
      @thewillofabeast9079 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

      Yeah, I tend to skip this episode and pretty much the whole breakup era between Finn and FP. I can understand and see the message here but I consider this as a “one watch and be done” scenario. I kinda felt that the whole experience was rushed though. We’ve known for a while that the Cosmic Owl is an important being and when he appears in Finn’s dream that led Jake to saying that the fight between FP and IK had an important meaning. Finn messed up as he’s 13(?) and still young. No one is an expert. And he had remorse. I felt that the inclusion of Cinnamon Bun was . . . random and kinda forced but it kinda makes sense I guess. As a kid, when I saw when Finn was trying to explain to FP about why he did what he did because of his dreams with the Cosmic Owl, it was shifted to her point of view which she was hearing gibberish, literally. Kid me thought that she wasn’t paying attention and didn’t hear his reasoning thinking he only wrote the note to hurt her. But as a I got older, I can understand as she heard Finn saying he caused all of this and was so surprised she couldn’t believed it and zoned out.
      While I still feel that the writers kinda dropped the whole breakup thing out of no where, I’m at least glad they’re still good friends. Still love Finn’s character by the way.

  • @finch6078
    @finch6078 2 ปีที่แล้ว +76

    The way Finn made up with her was so grown-up and impressive of the character. The main character of a kids show making mistakes and hurting people, and taking full responsibility for it and making up is something we don’t see much. I’m genuinely impressed with how Finn matured as a person, and accepted how he messed up with her. Their friendship after that episode is one of the most wholesome ones I’ve seen on TV, which is why the two are probably my favorite characters on the show, or even cartoons in general.

    I'm going to be honest with you. This ship self-destructing so magnificently started the beginning of the end of my interest in Adventure Time. I basically went through all the stages of grief over the course of the next year or two, going all the way from Denial through Bargaining until finally reaching Acceptance around the time of the season finale with the Comet. I still watched that season finale, but after that, I really didn't bother paying attention to any future releases from this show. Their breakup episode really upset me because I really felt the whole "will of the author" in the episode. The big thing that bothers me is that Jake is totally on board with manipulating flame princess and throughout the rest of the show he's usually the first one that calls Finn out on his bullshit. Jake may be an idiot but he's always been more emotionally mature than Finn and should of called him out instead of encouraging him even if it's in that weird Jake way, like poorly phrased advice that is easily misunderstood, a lecture on a completely unrelated topic, or I'm not gonna stop you but I don't support this. I remember realizing almost as soon as Jake talked to Finn after his first dream, that something was off with Jake's characterization. These sort of out of character moments happen when a character behaving normally would stifle the story the author wants to tell. And it just feels like the author cheated.

As a little kid with not much real world awareness, I took what the show originally told me was gonna be the love interest and fully shipped Finn and Bubblegum. It’s weird looking back now and seeing just how completely romantically incompatible they are, not to mention with the knowledge that you gain later in the series. PB isn’t just an 18 year old who doesn’t want to date a 12 year old for obvious reasons, she’s an immortal elemental being who’s been around over a thousand years and has such a passing interest in the lives of mortals, her main connection to Finn is a relationship she had with his PAST LIFE.

    I've been feeling pretty nostalgic recently, so I started watching the series again. Flame princess was and still is my favorite character. I grew up with the show and mostly matched Finn's age throughout the entire show, so flame princess always reminds me of my first gf. I would love to say my relationship was healthier than Finn's, but to be honest, it wasn't much different. Thanks partly to how the series showed he did something terrible to FP, I became aware of how awful I was being in my relationship so decided to end it. With some time to work on myself and reflect on what I did wrong, I could apologize her and become friends again. To this day I still have contact with her, and I'm truly grateful to the series for showing me that it could work out, even if you fucked it up as bad as Finn did with FP.
    Burning Low is definitely my favorite episode of all the series, it reminds of the days when I watched AMVs of the ship without knowing what shipping actually was. I just loved their chemistry and was everything that mattered to me. I was really sad when it ended, but seeing FP have more and more personality when new episodes about her came out was really nice. I do like to think that after the finale they end up coming back, even if there's literally nothing to support it, but is just that I love those kind of tropes. It's way more probable that Finn ended alone or with Huntress Wizard, but I don't care I guess.
    Thanks for making this series of AT shippings, it's the reason I started watching the show again after all these years.

    It’s super important to show good people doing awful things like that. Especially with how a lot of media shows hero characters, it can be easy to come under the impression that if you’re a good person or have good intentions, hurting people is pretty much something that can’t happen. It’s so important to show people and especially kids that they can do awful things and should have the presence of mind to recognize it, own it, and change

      @@felineartsy Yeah, and honestly, it kinda reminds me of my own characters. I plan to make a video game, and the main character, Pop, is a nice person, but she doesn't take things seriously, keeps making jokes and breaking the 4th wall in order to make the player laugh, but it makes her boyfriend, Desmon, incomfortable. He likes to make jokes too, but he's a lot more introverted, and Pop giving all of her attention to the player, sometimes only answering him in order to make a joke, makes him doubt their relationship. At the end, the bad guy of the story finally reaches the artifact he was searching for and makes a wish. It's a complicated story and I don't want to spoil too much in case it becomes an actual game one day, but basically, this wish makes Desmon evil. We'll save him, but we'll learn later that, with enough will and confidence, he could have made the wish ineffective. But he didn't, because he was doubting a lot recently, and even though she's kind-hearted, this is entirely Pop's fault.

    There was a multi-episode arc of Finn accidentally burning bridges with characters. It started with flame princess, then princess bubblegum, then Marceline to a lesser extent, and even ice king if you want to get technical. The brilliant part is that none of it was resolved by the end. It took many episodes for Finn to talk to these characters again, multiple seasons in the case of FP. When coming back, Finn didn't try to crawl back like the confused wreck they left him as, but he acted professional and took responsibility when it was appropriate. That's the type of character growth few other shows have dared to do, as putting the protagonist in a bad light and having him figure himself out without the cop out forgive and forget trope is a risky move that only the best writers can pull off.

    Ice King (in far more violent ways) for similar reasons.
    Almost like some drunken uncle (Not a beacon of morality. But still an older person who knows that you should know better. At least better than them)

    My only real issue with how the show treated Finn's break-up with Flame Princess is that it was not even entirely Finn's fault. The reason he wrote the letters is because Jake said it was SUPER important for him to see the Cosmic Owl again. And this could've at least worked if they ADDRESSED this fact. The fact that Jake played a part in ruining a perfectly happy and healthy relationship with his superstitious bullshit about the Cosmic Owl. But no, they never put any of the fault on Jake. While there is the scene of FP seeing Finn as a manbaby trying to explain himself, that's only one side of the issue. Finn poorly explaining his terribly thought-out plan and selfishness doesn't address Jake's fault in it. Not once Jake try and share to blame with Finn for basically fear-mongering him into believing he NEEDED to make Flame Princess and Ice King fight, Finn's personal pleasure in it was only one side of the issue. It's just 'oops, Finn was stupid goodbye happy relationship.'
    I would've rather they stuck completely to it just being Finn who really wanted to get off. But the Ice King dream could've easily been a way for him to see that the moment he manipulated FP, he didn't get what he wanted and learn from that one mistake before it got out of hand.
    But no, no reflection on that or the possibility that Finn stops before he goes to far. Jake serves as the final push to do something hurtful to FP and it's all just 100% Finn's fault.

I also really like that when they broke up, they managed to stay friends, especially after a bad break up... it's hard to build trust to get back to that point. I like that Finn actually took his time to fully understand what he did wrong, yea he tried to get her back as his gf a few times and it went down badly, but once he got older and more mature, he realized what he did wrong and tried to get her back into his life as a friend bc he really cares about her and that was enough for them both. The fandom blame after frost & fire
    80% - “it was all finn’s fault, he manipulated his gf for his own pleasure and even if he HAD to have the 3rd fight, what he wrote in the letters was too harsh. Plus it never would’ve escalated if he didn’t prompt the 2nd fight”
    10% - “it was jake’s fault, he’s the one who told Finn to get them to fight a 3rd time. Also the last time Finn ignored a cosmic owl dream, billy died so you understand why he would panic; Jake got him spooked abt it”
    5% - “it was the cosmic owl’s fault, if he just stayed out of finn’s dreams none of this would’ve happened”
    3% - “it was ice king’s fault, everything started bc he made fun of Finn and FP for no reason”
    2% - “it was flame princess’s fault, she didn’t have to beat up IK and should’ve controlled her temper”
    idk man it was crazy

      I don't blame the Cosmic owl. As we saw in his episode it's not up to him in who's dreams he is going too. Yes, he can simply ignore it , but I doubt it's good for the universe.

      I feel like drama could've also been avoided if Finn had simply told Flame Princess upfront, "Hey, I think it's hot when you beat people up [pun intended], wanna do it again?" But, I guess he was also like 14-15 and never really had any friends his own age to interact with so someone would probably have to explain that to him.

    Yup their relationship was a train wreck; but I love how in the end Finn grew as a person and matured greatly in the end. They work really well as a platonic friendship. Flame Princess Phoebe is a great character.

    Man back in the day this was my favorite ship. Both of them were young and Finn was Kind of immature a bit but man when he did what he did, it was really the beginning of the turnaround point for Finn’s character. Bro was feening for a relationships with bubblegum. The goodbye for finn and PB was when she went back to being her age after her and finn hung out when she was turned back to around 13 years old.
    Finn sometimes was not mature enough to understand peoples feelings. Bro got off literally hurting his girlfriend. And since he was turned on by that he lost sight of her feelings and thought they could be together no matter what but was too immature at the time to understand.
    FB is probably my favorite character along with jake. Experiencing the people that hurt her even her Ex finn. She matures so much and knows she’s young. Making her own kingdom and coming into contact with Cinnamon bun who was a joke character but matured because no one else took him seriously was crazy and I love that he became her therapist and best friend. She became a better person and was years ahead of maturity than finn.
    Damn right adventure time wasn’t the same but I love that it took such a long time until finn really matured.

    I really wished that they did an episode (titled 'Burned Out') where *FP gets turned into a human by a magician* after she accidentally destroyed something very important to them.
    FP would feel uncomfortable in a human body but they use this opportunity to do stuff that they've never done before. Afterwards, Finn suggested keeping her new form, but the growing dysphoria of her new body catches up to her and she feels frustrated. However, this triggers a small piece of her flame left behind and is slowly beginning to grow inside her. So the two have to turn her back before she gets consumed by her own flames.

    I think breaking up, ending romantic relationships, helps us grow.
    I didn’t love FP bc/ I felt it was the weakest season in the series, I feel like she really only got depth after Finn-maybe being more than “the girlfriend” added character, but also like she got hobbies and really figured out her values.
