Gino Quilico is one of my favourite singers of all time. And such a gifted actor! His Figaro is definitive, utterly captivating and completely believable - as if he were an actual historical figure.

Gino Quilico stopped the show when he sang this role at Place des Arts in Montreal. If Gounod had been there, he would have spared Valentin's life and given him another aria.

I think this performance is quite splendid. Bravo!
During the applause at the end of the aria, at least in as much of it as this clip shows, the singer does not acknowledge the audience. My impression is that he has identified so much with Valentin that he cannot immediately return to being Gino. What do you think?

    • @golden-63

It's considered bad form for an opera singer to acknowledge the audience/break character except at the curtain call.

    • @xxsaruman82xx87

    • @golden-63

@@xxsaruman82xx87 Apples and oranges. Bastianini was a dramatic Baritone with a dark luscious sound combined with squillo. Gino was a LYRIC Baritone with a lighter, brighter sound. But having heard him at the Met in this very role, I assure you, the voice is quite big. Lyric doesn't mean small.

Comments like that (The x is a tenor but he sings this bariton role) are often premature conclusions. It depends on many factors we cannot overlook just by hearing one aria. So you are absolutely right.

      Giuseppina Scapparone

@@xxsaruman82xx87 The truth is, I'd bet that roughly half of all male voices are tweeners and could go either way. Type/fach isn't a choice for some, but it kind of is for others. Melchior would've had a fine career as a baritone for example -- it just wouldn't have been as prolific as his tenor career.

*I heard Quilico live at the Met in this role. Yes, it's a Lyric Baritone, yes, his low range isn't the strongest...along with most lyric Baritones, but Lyric doesn't necessarily mean a small voice. I can tell you that LIVE, it was a big voice, as big as the Mephistopheles that evening, the great James Morris.*
