Ride to Pennsylvania’s “Top of the World” on my Vespa GTS

  • A ride to Pennsylvania’s Bucktail Overlook, also known as the “Top of the World,” located in Driftwood. I took the long way, even cutting through State Game Lands near Farrandsville. My favorite part of the trip was the beautiful views of the West Branch of the Susquehanna River, and I followed its meandering path all the way from Lock Haven to Emporium, where I stopped to fuel up.

Great video. There is nothing like riding a Vespa GTS, nothing. I had big bikes in the 1990’s but they were never as much fun as a Vespa GTS, been riding one for ten years now and it still puts a smile on my face.

You're riding through some of the best parts of Pennsylvania for scooters and motorcycles. I've never been to the Bucktail Overlook. Maybe it's time. Thanks for such a beautiful, inspirational video of your ride!

Thanks, Steve. I bumped into a guy last spring at Riansares Mountain overlook in Lamar. He was a well traveled rider with a recent trip on 2-wheels to Alaska on his resume. He highly recommended Top of the World, and even gave me his own paper map with it circled. It’s always great to bump into fellow riders and be able to swap ideas on cool destinations.
I think you’d enjoy TOTW. It’s very peaceful up there, and the directions are straightforward: just follow the river northwest to Driftwood!

Thanks For the video! Love the scenery. I took my GTS for a 300 mile spin down to southern OH and back. Triple Nickle and some of the other roads near Athens. I absolutely have to get to PA it is beautiful!

Man, 300 miles is no walk in the park! I’m glad you were able to get out and enjoy the great outdoors, Vespa-style. Come see us in Pennsylvania sometime!

Beautiful ride! Thanks for not using a nausea-inducing helmet cam.

Thanks, Ken. I bought a helmet mount for my GoPro last year and was disappointed when I edited the video for that very reason. I haven’t yet thought of a scenario when I would use it again.

Great ride! Thanks for taking us along. I didn’t know there was a road on the north side of the river by Farrandsville. How did you get up 664? Was that Hazard road or Queen’s Hollow road?

Thanks, Tim! I took Hazard Road all the way up through the game lands from Farrandsville to Haneyville. Like Columbus, I was hoping to find a passageway directly to Hyner on the opposite side of the river but had no luck. I knew Route 44 was up there and hate backtracking, it just took forever due to the rough terrain. I’ll probably never go that way again, but I did enjoy the experience!

Has your GTS proven to be reliable without issues? Seems to ride well. Do you feel it has more visibility than a like sized motorcycle?

Hi Lori, I’ve certainly had my share of maintenance issues but I do think many have come more from my own inexperience as a rider. I do tend to put a fair amount of mileage on the GTS, so it seems I’m constantly having to change oil and tires, and I burned out my ignition starter two years ago. I may be forgetting something, but overall I’ve been very pleased with the reliability of the GTS, and feel confident when I go for rides that it will get me there.
I don’t have much experience riding anything else, so can’t make any comparisons. That being said, I often hear motorcyclists comment on not being seen or people pulling out in front of them. Knock on wood, but so far this has not been my experience. Maybe people are able to see me better? I’m not sure.
