I grew up out west on salmon and steelhead. Now I'm in TN bass fishing from shore. The summer thermoclines cause fish to be out in deeper water so I'm using my long 9 to 10 foot steelhead rods to reach that distance. Just ordered the Elite 10 ft spinning rod. Should get those spy baits and jerkbaits out 50 yard or so. I do get alot of strange looks, especially when I catch fish right next to Billy Bob who doesn't k ow he's 10 yards out in 100% sterile water.
Just a guess: The ELITE branding might have been temporary as it has never appeared on any HMG rods I ever bought. Really appreciated your video on HMG original vs HMG 2022 as I own and absolutely love Fenwick HMG spinning rods for bass kayak fishing. In Jan'22 I pre-ordered one HMG 2022 6'9" ML 2pc from Cabela's Canada on sale for $99Cdn and it took until Jun'22 to get it. That wait was OK because bass season where I live in Ontario doesn't open before then. It turned out to be perfect for catching smallmouth bass with ZMAN 2.75" baits on 1/16oz NED jigheads in unprecedented numbers for me. Regular price meanwhile shot up to $149Cdn, but as bass season was nearing an end, Cabela's repeated the sale so I bought a second one. (I never want to be without one.) As for my previous generation HMG (what you called original) rods, I have the 6'6" MH 1pc (two of them). These have proven to be the workhorses for me for catching largemouth bass with a variety of bigger lures in thicker cover and they are what led me to fall in love with the Fenwick HMG spinning rod series.
@@Justin-zw1hx over the years I have been quite surprised at the size of hook that produces the best quality lockup - for me that’s been a #6. If #8 works for your style, don’t let anyone sway you from your own experience telling you that. Sometimes outdoorsmen forget we are all a little different how we set a hook, and we might think our own way is the best way - it’s really just “a way” with many outcomes for other anglers. FISH’ON!!
@@Justin-zw1hx never underestimate the aggressiveness of trout, especial Brown and Tiger trout. I once witnessed a 18 inch Brown attempt to swallow a 12 inch brown, with half the fish hanging out of its mouth, by running its face into the bank repeatedly. I bought the original HMG the carbon one you have in the videos then I seen they came out with the new HMG same color as the Elite and I was looking at them and there was only one Elite and I thought they messed up so I bought it they are really hard to find if at all so I'm glad I grabbed it
Nice Grab, I’d have done the same thing on chance alone, I still haven’t seen any available in the state. I have however, seen the Elite Walleye, and it looks like a fine rod - possible I may have to get one to try it out.
Hey petty good vid. I would just like to point out that newer Hmg,has a smaller eyelets distance to the shaft then the older HMG. Maybe that helps with the eyelets cracking.
Dave, I took a minute to check this out and found that the eyelet length was fairly margin compared to the Carbon HMG. Do you think that minimal distance would change how the resin reacted to flexing?
Great video! I just ordered the HMG from Cabela's. As I understand it the current "HMG" is the same as the Elite HMG in your video, I think they just discontinued the old HMG and made the Elite HMG their base HMG model.
Excellent commentary, thank you! I wasn’t sure whether it was a replacement model, or a new model, but either way I have been enjoying it! Are you enjoying yours?
You know, I love them both for different reasons. I took my 1st gen rod out last weekend again after extensive time with the Elite. It wasn’t quite as sensitive, and a little heavier, but I enjoyed it! Sometimes I want more finesse and light action in a rod, and sometimes I want speed and power - I fish fast and aggressive often, and when those days are on I’ll grab my 1st gen HMG. I just bought an hmg from Cabela’s in Lehi, they had a huge selection. And I can’t wait to use it this weekend
@@jonathanderbidge598 Excellent!! I’ve gotten a few myself from that location, went out today and froze, but caught an absolute HOG!
@@jonathanderbidge598 reach out to us when you’re around, maybe we can get on some hogs out here!

Thank you for the video and review this rod! 😉
Do you think? I just wanted to give an opinion that was somewhat valuable, thank you for the compliment!
very nice, what treble hook sizes do you use on the spinners?
Sorry for the late response, I use #6 treble (round bend) - I seem to get better hookups with the round bend.
@@blindbearoutdoors7644 thanks! I thought size 8 was a little big for trout, seems like 6 is still a good size

sounds good, I will give size 6 a try, I just compared 8 and 6, they are really similar.@@blindbearoutdoors7644

Dave! oh man Thank you, i love to hear about design intricacies, I didn’t consider that may affect the flex on the eyelet joint. Great info!
