When I was a young man growing up in Western Pa. I learned to fish by throwing hardware at trout in the small streams and rivers that abound in that part of the country. My weapon of choice was a Fenwick spinning rod with a Pfleuger Supreme reel. The exact rod was an E60MLF. To this day it is the best spinning rod I have every owned.
I really love your description, and I also love the equipment you’re talking about. Sometimes I forget that, while learning equipment and products, we are also creating memories. THANKYOU!
Hey Daiwa makes a fine rod, the ergonomics of the Fenwicks seem to work well for me. However, I am also a fan of St. Croix Eyecon medium lights, especially the butt length, for really tight small streams with big fish.
@@blindbearoutdoors7644 it’s phenomenal! Buttery smooth with solid drag and line capacity. We have some monster browns in Central Oregon and it handles them no problem.
You have snapped the one piece twice? Man that is bad luck!! I did once snap an original HMG two piece, sportsman’s warehouse traded it right out and I haven’t had a problem since.
I was humming and hahing over, one of these just the rod , but went with the 6'6 medium fast 8-16 line hmx with a Pfluger president 30 on sale for 129 cdn, had a gift card from Cabela's for a fly reel I returned. I have a old made in USA hmg 7 wt fly rod, and started with a hmx 6wt landing chum salmon with it. I'll still get this if there's a lighter weight rod
Thank you for commenting! I have found myself lately moving to the lighter action rods to see just how far I can push them, part of the game I suppose. All I really know is I have not been disappointed, and I’m glad I share that experience with many others. I have several HMG’s in the Medium-fast and I have loved them, but they have become more my workhorses, mostly because I feel like I can drag a semi truck in with them.
@@blindbearoutdoors7644 yeah I was just using a spinning combo I got from the side of the road during spring cleaning. That , and my fly rod were stolen this year ,so I upgraded and got two , ultralight daiwas from the 90's full cork grip with sliding Fuji reel seats , 2-6 and 4-8 ,7 1/2 and 7 foot , very nice rods .
@@JohnJames. can’t hate any of those options, but the theft sucks. I once left my Orvis and Sage fly rig by the upper Provo in 10 degrees, after 20 mins of driving I figured it out and headed back to disappointment. Won’t get that rig back any time soon - my condolences.
Just got one for 180 at sportsmans warehouse, came with a pflueger supreme. Would 6 lbs fluorocarbon be a good choice? I mainly fish in canyon rivers in the Colorado rockies
@@dg7708 you know I’m a big fan of big green Mono. On those shorty rods (and I love mine) in tight spaces with the potential for lots of abrasion, I would run 6-8lb myself. If ripping a ways out on casting (up or down stream) I’d run 6lb, but short and controlled casts, I’d run 8lb.
@TVslee it has an absolutely positive lock up, tip up - fish on. The control of the rod was great, I could feel every turn of the the fish’s head, and could correct to keep the hook set positive. The rod was robust on the cast, and ripped those lures out on the throw. Butt section was nice and stiff, and well balanced in both throw and retrieval, which works for my hand placement.
I liked your review of the Fenwick HMG med/lgt but what length? Please list the code for this rod for my comparison with present equipment. I have a new EAG66M-FS-3 FOR 1/4-3/4 oz. Lure 6-14 lb. Line. to go with my Mitchell 409 UL w/ high speed retrieve reel. The two spools offer minimum and maximum capacity so I will use a light 2-4# mono Hi-vis line and 10# braided, I think. I bought the 3-piece rod to supplant my ancient (1980's) Garcia blue 7' med/fast 1/4 - 6/4 oz. 6-20 lb. line. one piece. I have not fished in fresh water so I am looking forward to a new experience.
@George, thanks for reaching out! This rod is the one piece HMGPX69ML-FS 6’9” Medium Light-Fast 1/8-5/8oz Lure. 6-12lb line (01E21BK). I’m running 6lb Big Game mono on my Supreme XT 30-35 with it. Traditionally Im casting 1/4-3/8oz Blue Fox and or Panther Martin spinners, but it throws the lighter balsa-based Rapalas with easy , though the retrieve can get heavy depending on the spoon. It balances better in the hand with the XT35 than the XT30, but the XT30 is still a nice lighter option, especially in short water.
@@Cornelius798 cheers!! You will not be disappointed, I am still a believer. I would love if they made a model with a shorter handle butt section for those super tight fast stream spots.
Hey MAK, my particular model weighs in at 4.5oz dry, and 12.5oz with a Pflueger Supreme XT35 (SUPXTSP35), and 100yd or so of Big Green Mono. Great balanced setup. Cheers!
Treble hooks for creek trout? Please, at least tell me they're not barbed. The native brook and resident brown trout populations in our creeks are so fragile and the fish themselves so delicate that it pains me to see stuff like this. Maybe those are stocked and robust monsters that can handle that kind of assault.
That is an understandable concern, and thank you for the comment. These fish are aggressive, heavy, fast, and (I like your term better) robust. Not to be confused with their more delicate small stream, soft-mouthed, small creek relatives. And that river holds some truly impressive monsters. I once watch a brown there swimming head-first into the banks repeatedly trying to cram the tail end of another fish (that was clearly to large to be eaten) deeper into its mouth - quite a sight. Thank you for being concerned about those little guys, they need our help.

Was going to get this but was soldout everywhere so I went with the Daiwa tatula xt and it’s also an amazing rod imo

nice video i have 3 hmg's inshore model's in medium light medium and medium heavy awesome rod's for the $$
They totally are! I need to get mine in some salt water and see how they handle those heavy fighters
I have an HMG inshore and it’s my favorite inshore rod I own.
Is it the carbon, or the elite? Also, I haven’t yet used it back home in the ocean - you?
I have the supreme xt 35 on a St. Croix Premier 7’ med light. It’s my favorite combo for big trout.

That clear creek canyon Utah?
It isn’t , it’s Big Cottonwood, but I like that it was deceptive enough to remind you another place!

I have significantly more expensive rigs, and less expensive rigs, but this one is FANTASTIC! If you need expense to fish, you can’t fish.
What action rod?
This particular rod is medium-light and fast action. Thank you for reaching out to ask!
Still liking it? I need a new medium-light rod for a Pflueger President 3000 reel and looking at this.
Absolutely I do! In fact, I’m looking to put a Medium-Fast rod on my Slammer III 4500 as my live bait catching rig when deep sea kayak fishing!
