Aurora came out with some amazing figure kits, no doubt about it. And these Sports Figures are among the most dynamically posed they ever made, (with "Blackbeard the Pirate" coming in a close second.) But I rarely saw any of these Sports Figure kits in hobby shops growing up, nor did any of my model building friends ever have these. And I never saw any built examples at model shows.
The main problem for Aurora was that in the mid-1960's, boys who built models (and it WAS mainly boys who built models back in the day,) rarely played sports. Conversely, boys interested in sports rarely built models. Call it the "Jocks vs Nerds Gap." (That said, my teenage grandson plays on his school baseball team and is also an avid Fortnite player. Times change, I guess . . . .)
RIP Willie Howard Mays Jr., (AKA, "The Say Hey Kid.") May 6, 1931 - June 18, 2024. You will be sorely missed by Baseball fans and model builders, alike.
