RAM 1500 Max Tow Rating (They LIED) | 5 Tow Ratings You NEED To Know

  • I explain 5 critical tow ratings for your RAM 2500/RAM 1500 Trucks that you guys need to know. I also explained why almost every RAM 1500 truck does not have the "Advertised" MAX Towing capacity. These are the 5 towing tips I would recommend to make sure you are always safe on the road with a trailer behind your truck.
    2022 Ram 1500 TOWING CHARTS - media.stellantisnorthamerica.com
    I hope everyone is having a fantastic long weekend! I figured I would make a quick video about the tow ratings I always consider before ever towing a trailer with my ram 2500 power wagon.
    1. The trucks max tow rating.
    - This may seem obvious but every truck usually has a different tow rating based upon how the truck is configured including what kind of engine is in the truck, the transmission, the gearing and what kind of cab you have. these are all critical to what your tow rating is and can all dramatically affect how much weight the truck can safely pull.
    2. The truck Max Payload
    - Again this may seem obvious but like the max towing numbers, the payload numbers are also effected by the configuration of the truck. having a 4x4 trucks means your payload numbers will be much lower then the advertised ratings.
    3. Receiver weight rating.
    - This will have a tongue weight rating as well as a tow rating. it is important to know both and what nobody tells you is in order to reach the max towing numbers often times you need a special weight distributing hitch in order to not over load the receiver.
    4. The Hitch itself
    - The hitch also has a tongue weight rating as well as a max tow weight rating. now with a ram 1500 with only a class 4 hitch. the hitches tend to be rated pretty low and it is important if you are going to be pulling a lot of weight off the bumper that you have an appropriate hitch.
    5. The Ball
    - Each ball has it's own weight rating and it stamped right into it. but don't be fooled because even the same size ball can have dramatically different weight ratings.
    Bonus. Trailer tire speed rating
    - often times the trailer tires are only rated for like 110km/h so if you are planning on towing down the highway make sure you check your tires because nobody wants a blow out on the side of the highway.

    Very good info., very well presented. When I bought my 2022 Ram 1500 Laramie Sport Ecodiesel, the dealership insisted that it's tow capacity was 12,500lbs. I tried to explain that based on the configuration of the one I was purchasing it would not be that ideal advertised rating. Since I tow a 6300lb Travel Trailer (actual loaded weight), I wasn't to concerned about not being able to tow 12,500lbs. My main focus was payload capacity. The sticker on the door jam made that easy since it showed 1530lbs. I was impressed by that since it has the 33 gal. fuel tank. My real loaded tongue weight for my RV is around 800lbs so that leaves me with about 700lbs for me, my wife, the dog, and a little bit of gear in the truck.

    First, the Ram comes with either the 3:21 rear axle ratio or a 3:92. Not a 3:91 as you stated. Also it’s not true that you have to get a Rebel to have the 3:92 rear axle ratio. You can get it in the Big Horn or most any configuration as long as you have the 5.7 Hemi.

    I knew half ton Rams have very low payload capacity, but I was shocked to see you have less than 1500 lbs of payload capacity with a 3/4 ton. My 2016 Silverado LTZ 1500 had a payload capacity of 1572 lbs. My 2019 Silverado LTZ 1500 has a payload capacity of 1910 lbs, but it has the max tow package.

    A weight distributing hitch uses leverage to transfer load to the front axle through the hitch. However, it has no effect on tongue weight. So a properly loaded 7,000 lb trailer should have a tongue weight of 700-1,050 lbs (10-15%). The hitch will shift the load toward the front axle but tongue weight remains the same. It seems some folks think weight distributing hitches are magic, especially after the pitch from the sales person. And ALL of that tongue weight figures into your payload. Be safe out there.

    Great video. The things you covered here are things that a very surprising amount of truck owners do not know. How many times do you see a 1/2 ton truck pulling a trailer with the bumper almost dragging on the pavement? A dealership salesman will always tell you the truck can tow more than it actually can because they don’t know either. If you’re looking for a truck for work and towing, you absolutely have to do extensive research, or you could make a $60,000 mistake.

    • @TheGettyAdventures
      @TheGettyAdventures  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Exactly! I remember when I bought my 2017 ram 1500. the salesman told me this truck will tow 10,000 lbs and pointed to the sales brochure. turns out the truck could only tow 8,000lbs so yes if you are planning to tow regularly doing some research is important!

All he did was google it and saw that the 1500 with the Hemi could do 10,000, but didn’t try to figure out what that specific truck could pull. Still might pull the trigger on the Truck because it was a good price and our camper doesn’t weigh a ton.

      $60k mistake? Try $80 or $100k at 2023 prices. Crazy how much trucks cost today and how little they tow in certain configurations. I’m trying to find a good daily that can also tow 14k -15k and thought the PW would be the answer. Problem is most PW with the features I want cost $80K (usd) and can only tow 10K. So now I’m looking at a Rebel, but all of them on the lot are Diesel with the smaller gear ratios and rated at about 12K. It’s a bit frustrating.

    Fantastic that you point out that max towing number requires all those options. Oversize tires probably reduce it too. My 2023 1500 has oversize tires and crewcab and 4x4. Getting 4 people my size in probably max its weight much less towing. Enjoying the video.

  • @jpmaurice00
    @jpmaurice00 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thanks Alex. All very good points. One that may be misunderstood is the cargo weight rating in the fact that fuel weight and passenger weight all goes against that max cargo weight rating as do the weight of that WDH, any bed liner and tonneau cover. The sixth point is the vehicles GCWR or gross combined weight rating witch is the total wight of the trailer plus cargo and the vehicle and its cargo.

    • @AlaskaErik
      @AlaskaErik ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Fuel weight is part of curb weight. Gross Vehicle Weight Rating minus curb weight = Payload Capacity. Payload capacity includes the weight of all passengers, including the driver, as well as the weight of any cargo placed in the truck.

      @@TheGettyAdventures Jeff Bearce. In my experience, yes there are different weight ratings for equalizer hitches. When I bought a heavier trailer last year, I took the truck, hitch, & trailer back to the shop where I bought the original equalizer hitch. They showed me the stamped ratings on my old hitch, then swapped out the tongue that the ball attaches to and the equalizer bars (the new ones were MUCH beefier) and my hitch went from 6000 lbs to 12,500 lbs. Total upcharge was only $120.

  • @brucepeek3923
    @brucepeek3923 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Yes all thats true.. But- to know how much you can tow, as well as how much rear axle pounds you can have for tongue weight you need to put your truck on the scale with you, a full tank of gas, and whatever other equipment you intend to have when you tow.. Then subtract that number from your door sticker rear axle rating. Mine is 3800- minus scale weight of 2450- leaving 1350. empty my trailer puts 800 lbs of tongue weight onto my truck.. With a horse it goes up to 1200 lbs still under my weight rating..BUT- factory weight ratings are usually optimistic. Ideally I'd only want about 1125 lbs on my rear axle. Because horses have high centers of gravity - and they move around a lot so you need more cushion on your weight ratings..
    best

    Pay load ratings are specific to each truck. Look at the yellow sticker on the diver side door jam. Lots to like about ram trucks but they have pathetic amounts of pay load. Best one I found was a classic sport addition that had 1550 on the door sticker. Which was only 45 lbs better than the 2011 truck I was looking to replace. Got lucky and found a max tow package chevy that actually has 2103 lbs. of payload. They add extra suspension and a 3/4 ton axle plus extra cooling and a bigger alternator.

      With that low payload , if you towed a trailer of 10,000 lb you need at the very least 1000 lb on the hitch ball (10%).
      Then you have the weight of the WDH, the driver’s weight, and anything else like a bed mat -50lb, a cooler, etc. so you have run out of payload. So you probably shouldn’t even tow 10,000 lbs with it

I mean my Tacoma's max towing rating is 6,500 lbs but with load range E tires my max tow rating went up to 7,500 lbs. I dont think the general public would know this tho

      Towing in Europe is a whole different animal. It cannot be compared in any way to North American towing ratings and standards, even when looking at the same vehicle.

    The power wagon ia fitted to be off road capable truck ,not a towing beast. Get the rebel for that.

    Buy a 2500 and just send it.

    In other words, you have to buy a real truck to get good towing capacity and many on the lots with four doors is not a real truck.

    Amazing how we have lost all this knowledge. Anyone that actually tows knows all this. Why would you want to tow a trailer that weights almost twice the truck. Good luck on slippery roads. So sad.

    Never buy a half ton

      I mean not never lol but I would strongly question a half ton bumper pulling 12,750 lbs safely

    • @AlaskaErik

      A half ton is more than adequate for lots of people. I have a 5000 lb GVWR travel trailer than I tow with my Silverado 1500 that has the max tow package. I really don't have to worry about exceeding any weight limitations with a trailer that size.

      i tow about 9500lbs max to be safe with my half ton setup, but i would argue, never buy a 3/4 ton, always start with a 1-ton

    My brother in-law 2008 ram 1500 drives a 20ft trailer with mowers or loads with mulch or 🪵 wood and puts loads on his truck it's a monster I see the chassis leveled when he carries a pallet of turf or rocks on his pickup and still its a work truck
