I won NaNoWriMo in eleven days a few years ago. I'd plotted out one story, but it was just "meh" when I started, so I decided I'd just give NaNo a miss for that year. Then, on November 20th, I randomly thought about a story idea I'd written the first few chapters for back in the 90s. Apparently, my subconscious had been working on it ever since, because I had ALL the ideas. So I started writing it, and it was done by midnight on the 30th. I really envy the fact that your mom is your cheerleader. Mine is decidedly apathetic about my writing, and when I was in high school, she actively discouraged me (mostly because I was doing it when I should have been doing homework, but still.)
So cool, my first nano, i completed it in 15 days, cause id just pent up so much hype for the book that i plowed through it really quick. Sorry to hear about your mum, I'm in the same boat with my family. You're really impressive xxx
BAHAHA. The mom in you is so right! I'm not saying that's why I got sick, but....😂 I'm making sure weekends are a thing for me, so it's definitely something I'm aware of working on! Sometimes self care is easy and sometimes I forget because I want to do ALL THE THINGS.
I wrote 7,971 words in the passed two weeks. I'd been editing so much last year that I decided to try to write 1k a day four days a week which seemed manageable. So, I'm pretty happy with that. :)
That's awesome! I find that by just aiming for 250 words a day i usually end up massively over performing, today i added 1500 words (though quantity doesn't necessarily mean quality), yesterday i did 14 (just came off a 3 day streak of having almost no motivation to add anything.).
Your vlogs are always in the background when I'm writing 'cause when I am stuck or annoyed I just watch your vlog and allow myself to think that it's just human to wear out. PLUS, I feel like you are a very loveable person (though I haven't met you yet) I just adore watching you struggle, not because I'm a sadistic, because I'm just so pleasantly surprised by your reactions to the situations. You just laugh it off.
Omg what a vlog!! Where do I even begin? I guess first off, I look so bored with the world when I'm in my writing zone lol. And can I just say that I'm addicted to your laugh? It makes me smile every time you do your "Ha-ha!" before cutting to the next scene lol. Can you please do a video on how you write while watching a tv show? I'd love to learn this skill! And omg you wrote before going to Disney?! I don't know how you're able to keep doing this! I'm teasing my hair before I go to the parks lol. You got sooo much done! I wanna try this someday, but I'm scared I'd fail on the first day in lol.
Wow. You are so amazing Kate, 50K in 10 days, however, I have done the same I won in 2017 NaNo in 9 days so it can be done, but it was overwhelming on every level, physically, mentally, emotionally, so I don't know if I am going to do it again. Have a blessed day!
27K is AMAZING!!! You are such an inspiration!! I love that you guys go to Disneyworld so often! I'm so jealous lol! And I use The Bachelor as my background writing show as well hahaha. It really is a show you don't have to pay a lot of attention to lol. Although there have been times where I miss something and a fight breaks out and I have to rewind hahaha! As far as writing, I've really only been working on the joint book with Faith and final edits of Atlas Rising. I'm dying to write this new book soon though. I'm thinking I'll officially start it on our write-in! :-)
I've done a fast draft before during my first Camp NaNo, and I wish that I hadn't of done it. I ended up writing about 80,000 words in fifteen days. Most of it was crap dialogue, and I haven't touched that novel since because I'm too scared to try to fix the mess that I made for myself.
You can edit a crap script, but you cant edit a bad page. Just know that as it exists now, your script is the worst version of itself that it can ever be. Writing that much so quickly is really impressive, but you cant expect the first draft, especially when written so quickly, so be very good on its own. Sounds like a good candidate to the zero drafting method xxx
I just found your videos on you tube. I have been drifting through open heart surgeries and other health issues since my wife's death seven years ago. I think I'm ready to write my autobiography. Your realism and humor help me to relax so I can be creative. Thank you.
Two weeks ago I spent my vacation secluded in my sister's barn. I wrote 49,000 words in 7 1/2 days. First Draft complete. Now I'm on to my 6 rounds of edits. VERY EXCITED!
Hey, I just wanted to thank you for these writing experiment videos, and for providing a playlist of them. Your writing experiments playlist is one of the playlists I will just pop on when I've had a bad or a long day. You have such a positive, kind energy and you're just. I don't know. I feel better, hearing you in the background with all your amazing energy, and (of course) the writery topics.
I love how this turned into a Disney World vlog! Just found your channel and I love your videos. Everytime I watch you, I get motivated to work on my own novel. Keep up the good work!
I can't even imagine getting 5,000 words a day for multiple days, except for the occasional marathon day like once a year lol! Kudos to you for trying! And you made so much progress!! So inspired to write now, woo! :D
Found this on my timeline and loved it. You have a new follower and hitting that amount in 10 days is still amazing. Especially with all the 'drama', you had to deal with. Congrats Kate!
AWWW thank you so much! And bahaha yeah, there was quite a bit of "drama" but I'm beginning to think that's just life. It's gonna do what it wants and we gotta fit the writing in where we can! :)
Fantastic video-this is such a cool idea. I haven't done anything like this, but I have a lot of drafting to do this year so it sounds like a good idea. My writing has been poor in the last two weeks-moving house has been overwhelming everything. But I'm all set up in a new place now, and feeling in a creative mood.
I have just started watching your challenges and it has helped me get back into my writing mode. Think I might struggle as I have a habit of wanting to go back a chance instead of just writing and not editing it yet so thank you :)
I’m literally the slowest freaking writer everrrrrr! I experiment with writing 5k a day all the time but tbh I never get close to 1K, 3K on a good day and good days aren’t often lollll *sigh* 😅😅 my word count is crying
Bahaha it's totally fine to be a slow writer though! Sometimes I wish I was a slower writer with more words that will move on to the next draft. I end up rewriting the same scene so many times over, even though I'm "fast" hahaha.
You have inspired me! So, tomorrow I will be posting an announcement on my channel titled "Fast Draft Challenge : 50K words in 10 days" and I will link this video in the description box! This is JUST wanted I needed ~ cause girl, I needed a good kick in the ass! Thanks for the inspiration!
@@KateCavanaugh Day 1 ... less than 400 words BUT ...I also did some preplanning (sorta), worked a full time day at the day job, picked up a grocery order, filmed that haul, put that away, edited that video and cooked dinner for my family! IT will be finding my daily writing groove again and like I said ... It was the kick in the ass I needed!
I've been trying to enter a lot of writing contest lately and I've been trying to get my word count up. Last month I was in panic because three days before it was due I only had 2,000 words out of 10,000 (and I'm a slow writer) but I survived. I somehow did it. For some reason, my brain told me that I should compete in a 50,000 word contest that's due at the end of this month. I'm only a thousand ish words thorough so far but I found your video and gained hope and encouragement to keep going through. Thank you for this! It was really entertaining.
I wish I could write as much as you do in a day my word, you should be so proud love! You are pushing me to really buckle down and get those words in 🙌🏻💕
I'd totally try this, have been wanting to in fact. My dream goal is 5k/day, but I generally have a tough time getting past 3. That said, those 3k are an improvement from where I started, having a tough time making 1000, so I guess it's all relative. Ok, I've just binged three of your videos, have to get back to my own writing. Loving these challenges though, will definitely shout out if I ever do some for myself :)
Such a fun/sadistic challenge! I so want to try it too but it's kind of scary, let's be honest haha I think you got some pretty good results considering you've been sick and all, good job Kate!!
Congrats on the 27K!!! You are a rockstar!!! Certainly a successful experiment - 27000 more words than you had before! As for me, I've written more in the last couple weeks than i'd written in the last few months (about 10 pages - baby steps) . I wish the type of writing i do lended itself more to word counts or even page counts- but lets be real; graphs, numbers, etc, just dont really count appropriately lol. But it would help so much with goal setting! I'm proud of the 10 pages I've written, but i know its not really like... 10 pages of work. ugh. I'd love for you talk to an expert nonfiction author at some point to see how they deal with goal setting given all the research, charts, etc in like... a science book! Keep up the awesome work, and I hope your feeling better now! get some rest!
Did I always publish first drafts on Wattpad until now? Yes. Did I get a review telling me about all the things I could do better or just different? Yes. Will I put my fanfiction on hold for editing soon? Definitely. Yep. Publishing first drafts is not good, but I am soooo lazy…so when I put my fanfiction on hold for editing, I will edit my 26 chapters completely…they’re all first drafts…it’s the most successful fanfic I’ve ever written, but I HAVE to edit it…because it’s bad. There’s plotholes galore, and it’s noticeable
I'm late to the comment but I wanted to say congrats on writing all the words. I know I don't get to 50k in ten days because I hand-write my 1st/zero drafts. However, I have had 7k days while hand-writing. Your experiments are really fun to watch.
You did great! 27k is so good for that amount of time. The only challenge I've ever done was 50k in a day. I did it, but the words were terrible and unusable. I'd love to take on a fast drafting challenge again, but with the caveat that I have to write scenes I can actually use, as opposed to... gobbledegook, basically.
Kate Cavanaugh thank u ! it's a ya fantasy novel, and i am Loving the writing process !! i just wrote what i think was my favourite chapter in the whole book so far
First off Hi!! I found you in the TH-cam world because my husband (also a writer) subbed to you. I was watching some TH-cam on the tv with him one night and this video came up. I was so excited that I declared right then I was in. He looked at me shocked and said he would do it as well. We are just north of Austin tx and I saw that you are in Tx too! I was thinking about making a video of it but I would love to chat and get some tips for filming. Wish us luck!!!
This is crazy! I don't know if I could ever get 5k in one day, but then I've never consistently tracked my word count. Congrats on all your work! You're just a writing machine! If I was on vacation at a theme park, I'm pretty sure I'd get 0 words. As much as I love writing, I work myself to the bone walking around theme parks, so I just wouldn't have the strength. I'd read, but I think that'd be my creative extent. Also I was deathly sick this exact time last year... at my honeymoon in Universal Orlando. ☹ Being sick at a theme park is the worst experience I've ever had. I nearly passed out waiting in each line. My husband and I are using it as an excuse to someday go back and redo it so I'm not fainting all over the place lol-- I think not fainting is a decent goal to have on any vacation.
I love the videos where you challenge yourself 😊 I'm hoping to do a similar fast drafting experiment this month :-) later in the year I'll be doing one of those 24hour challenges too methinks.
Your challenges are cRAZY...I love it Also, question: how do you choose and do accurate research for the location for your novel if you don't exactly live there? Same goes with the culture and language of that place that you might not be familiar with. This may also be a video topic to help us other aspiring authors if you want. Thanks Kate!
When I want to read over my wip as a reader, I export it as an epub and read it in another app. That way I can't edit it if I find an error. I can only read it. I only do this at the end of a draft cycle tho. I don't do it when it's only half finished.
Hi, Kate! I’ve been watching your videos for the past couple of weeks and I love them! The struggle is real for us writers! Lol. Anyways I was hoping you could tell me about the application you use to write. I like how they break up the chapters! Thanks in advance!
Could you possibly show us how you come about your ideas and how you make them stick and begin the writing process? and maybe show us some outlining. I am using physical note cards at the moment and just kind of starting the writing part of everything. But I would love to know other ways to do it for next time or to brainstorm for later in my story :)
I think I might have made a couple videos similar to this, but not one comprehensive video! As for how I get my ideas - that's the easiest/hardest part. They just come to me! I keep a document for all my story/character/setting ideas that pop into my head and when I have time, I start on a new one. I have way more ideas than I'll ever have time to write. How I choose which story to write: th-cam.com/video/0A63GanaTL0/w-d-xo.html For my outlining process - I use Freytag's Pryamid usually! Here are 2 videos on my process (I made during NaNo '17 and one of the Camps in 2018): th-cam.com/video/mx4_LZChy0A/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/yEek3d8TqSs/w-d-xo.html And also I've done the notecard method / storyboarding before too (and especially when I'm concerned with timelines): th-cam.com/video/BVc-a_vvbKM/w-d-xo.html
Aww thanks! Half of my goal, but I'm proud of it. :) It's a win in terms of being more words than I had before but definitely not close to the 50K hahaha.
No, I wouldn’t fast draft yet, still learning to draft. Currently my writing was going at a good steady pace of 1k words a day except then my busy life got in the way. Though, I give you props for trying this! Also, it feels like every big NaNo sized writing project you do, you always are at Disney in the middle of it. How often do you go? Anyways, I gotta get back to writing but great video Kate!
I started this challenge Monday. Monday I got 2000 words, and Wednesday I got 2000 words. Every other day has been zero so far. I think it's safe to say I failed this challenge.
Haha I feel like I'm writing all the time too! Honestly I wish I had a good answer for this; I made a "re-introduction" video where I explained how I'm able to do the things I do, but I don't know how "balanced" my life is either. :/
Apologies if I’ve said this multiple times or if I keep forgetting to share it: I was in Orlando for 8 days the weekend MI:6 fallout came out for Pan American Masters championships at the Delta terminal next to the Burger King MCO has a great restaurant MCO/MKT I’ll tweet some images now... also, don’t forget: the struggle is [STILL] real.
How have the past two weeks of writing treated you? I have just started re-reading my novel and making revision notes and it's already beating me down. :)
I don’t know if I would put as a goal 5k per day, cause that’s crazy for me, but 2k, maybe? I mean, I usually hit really fast 1k, sooo 🤷🏼♀️ Or maybe something in the middle, like 1,5k Hmmm 🤔 idk
Ooooh that's always so rough! So you know exactly what the scene needs to be / what needs to be told but not how to write it? Or are you at a loss for what needs to go into the scene?
if you want to try again in the future, maybe get an equally ambitious writing buddy? someone who is as crazy (me) as you? OOO I know! adopt a slytherin!
BAHAHAH YESSSS! It would be so fun to get another crazy person to attempt the challenge with me. I'll let you know next time I work up to that insanity hahah.
@@KateCavanaugh Hopefully ill have a few completed outlines by then that i can pick from. As a crazy person, and a slytherin id be more than happy to wreak fast paced havoc on my unsuspecting characters.

Maam can you give me some advice on how to write a novel !!
Your challenges are cRAZY...I love it
Also, question: how do you choose and do accurate research for the location for your novel if you don't exactly live there? Same goes with the culture and language of that place that you might not be familiar with. This may also be a video topic to help us other aspiring authors if you want. Thanks Kate!
When I want to read over my wip as a reader, I export it as an epub and read it in another app. That way I can't edit it if I find an error. I can only read it. I only do this at the end of a draft cycle tho. I don't do it when it's only half finished.
Your out of your mind! I need to try this lol.
How I choose which story to write: th-cam.com/video/0A63GanaTL0/w-d-xo.html
For my outlining process - I use Freytag's Pryamid usually! Here are 2 videos on my process (I made during NaNo '17 and one of the Camps in 2018): th-cam.com/video/mx4_LZChy0A/w-d-xo.html
th-cam.com/video/yEek3d8TqSs/w-d-xo.html
And also I've done the notecard method / storyboarding before too (and especially when I'm concerned with timelines): th-cam.com/video/BVc-a_vvbKM/w-d-xo.html
You should do an experiment for how many hours it takes to fast draft.
You did amazingly well!
Aww thanks! Half of my goal, but I'm proud of it. :) It's a win in terms of being more words than I had before but definitely not close to the 50K hahaha.
This inspired me to try 90,000 words in 18 days...
15:00 OH COME ON I just waited for the video to load at 1080p so I could read that!! ☹️😂
not me binging all Kate's videos because I'm on summer break and have written 7k words in the past two days
"I just don't wanna do it" - mood :- D
I started this challenge Monday. Monday I got 2000 words, and Wednesday I got 2000 words. Every other day has been zero so far. I think it's safe to say I failed this challenge.
ur hair is beautiful
So writing but fundraising an for film was oer for screamfest also in LA thiugh there was a website but made a donation dont know if its over
Can you make a video about how you balance work, social time, and writing? It seems like you write all the time!
Haha I feel like I'm writing all the time too! Honestly I wish I had a good answer for this; I made a "re-introduction" video where I explained how I'm able to do the things I do, but I don't know how "balanced" my life is either. :/
*watching writing challenge*
*suddenly Disney vlog*
Apologies if I’ve said this multiple times or if I keep forgetting to share it: I was in Orlando for 8 days the weekend MI:6 fallout came out for Pan American Masters championships at the Delta terminal next to the Burger King MCO has a great restaurant MCO/MKT I’ll tweet some images now... also, don’t forget: the struggle is [STILL] real.
I don't think I can do that in a month or two
How have the past two weeks of writing treated you? I have just started re-reading my novel and making revision notes and it's already beating me down. :)
I'm going for 70k words in 17 days in spring break (22 april till 8 may)
5k in a day seems impossible. What a great challenge!
At 9:12, she says "I don't have a lot of *friends*..." lol. take that outta context and put it on a Tshirt! XD
I don’t know if I would put as a goal 5k per day, cause that’s crazy for me, but 2k, maybe?
I mean, I usually hit really fast 1k, sooo 🤷🏼♀️
Or maybe something in the middle, like 1,5k
Hmmm 🤔 idk
1:26 I think I love you hahaha
My fastest 50K was 17 days.
Wow! That's still so many words for that amount of time. You freaking go! 😄
If I tried I would probably fail by day 1.
late January - early feb 2019 - you were super sick? in retrospect, Kate had corona virus :D
what is a live write-in?
15:17 I CAUGHT THAT
I'm sitting at 23,968 words right now.
WOOHOO! Way to freaking go, Sonya! :)
@@KateCavanaugh I wrote a total of 633 today.
I have a skipped section in one of my stories... Can't figure out how to write it
Ooooh that's always so rough! So you know exactly what the scene needs to be / what needs to be told but not how to write it? Or are you at a loss for what needs to go into the scene?
Cannot figure out how to write it and make it believable... Been trying since camp nano to figure something out
I know what I want to do
How do you join the live writing streams?
You just click on the video! A chat feature pops up so you can chat with the streamer AND all the commenters at once. It's super fun!
Remember to drink plenty of water
ALWAYS.
if you want to try again in the future, maybe get an equally ambitious writing buddy? someone who is as crazy (me) as you?
OOO I know! adopt a slytherin!
BAHAHAH YESSSS! It would be so fun to get another crazy person to attempt the challenge with me. I'll let you know next time I work up to that insanity hahah.
@@KateCavanaugh
Hopefully ill have a few completed outlines by then that i can pick from. As a crazy person, and a slytherin id be more than happy to wreak fast paced havoc on my unsuspecting characters.
Kate Cavanaugh itd be cool if you did it like a cabin ??? // live write???
Missing this quirky kate 💔💔💔
