Scrap man, your top speed is fixed by your maximum rpm of the engine, the engines do not spin infinitely fast, and adding more engines does not change the max rpm of previous engines. You trade torque(acceleration) for top speed with gears. The more engines you have the more torque you have available to trade for top speed, but that top speed change doesn’t happen automatically
Edit: this doesn’t take into account aerodynamics
Edit: it seems like people don’t understand that I understand that gearing is how you achieve top speed. But given a fixed gear ratio adding more engines does not increase top speed, that is what I was trying to say

    • @1nicube
      @1nicube 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +37

exactly. The comment he made about not gaining more speed with the bigger engine is that both of their max rpm was 5100rpm to 5700rpm. So increasing rpm should increase top sped.

It's not exactly the entire picture as air resistance is in play, if u just put gear for increasing speed, it won't work as the torque needed to overcome the air resistance will not be sufficient and it won't atain speed as now u don't have torque to accelerate to that speed

Time for a bit of a physics lesson:
Your acceleration is the total force applied to the car divided by the weight. When your acceleration reaches 0, you're at a constant speed.
The total force on the car can be divided into two parts, the force going forward and the force going backwards. Backwards is things like friction, and drag. It depends on a lot of things, but mostly speed. The faster you go, the more drag (quadratic).
The force forwards is, not exactly the same but directly related to, the torque you see on the engine graph.
This means that you want the resistance force to be equal to the force produced by the torque provided at that speed. That means you'll have reached your top speed.
All engines have a certain performance graph that shows the torque they gave at each RPM. If you know the size of your wheels you know the RPM you need the final axle needs to spin at.
Now we know both the RPM and the required torque! Slap a few engines on, and make a gearbox such that at the required RPM there's enough torque. For gears: when you use a certain ratio (say, 1:2) the rpm increases by that much, but the torque decreases by the same amount (or reversed, of course). So what happens when you put a 1:2 gearing on an engine is that the theoretical max speed doubles, but the power it has to get there halves.
So there are a few things to do when building a car for this. Minimize drag so the torque required is minimal (although that's impossible afaik in this game). Then pick an engine, I believe the largest combustion one has the highest RPM limit. Gear this down so you're like 90% of the way on to the RPM limit at your required speed (shown in game on the graph). Then just keep adding engines until you have enough torque to actually reach that speed

Hi ScrapMan! After watching your video I've decided to try to build my own car to break the sound barrier. Here's what I've found:
    - Combustion engines are (a bit) better than the electric engines. This is because it's much easier to make a compact engine block with combustion engines than with electric engines. This causes wind resistance to be lower. My car used 8 of the best combustion engines and no electric engines.
    - Turbos and capacitors don't have a big effect on performance but can increase your wind resistance significantly. It could be better to get rid of them.
    - Don't try to over-engineer a gearbox, 1 or 2 gears should be enough. My car only used 1 gear and it can break the barrier. This means that your acceleration will be terrible however your weight and wind resistance will be lower so you'll have more power at high speeds. I used a medium to small gear transition and 3 planetary gears. This allowed my combustion engines to have their maximum torque at around 900-1200 kph. It's more important to have higher torque at higher speeds since wind resistance will have a bigger effect at high speeds.
    - Try to minimize the width of your car. I've found that wind resistance depends a lot on the area so the smaller your wheelbase is the lower your wind resistance will be. The small suspension is great for this.
    - Try to make your car as thin as possible. Big gears cause a lot of wind resistance so don't use them. Planetary gears and small and medium gears should be all you need.
    - Big racing wheels increase your top speed compared to the small racing wheels while having the same wind resistance. You can therefore use your wheel choice to finetune your top speed. This will however NOT show up in the power graph and only in the top speed number.
    - At 23:55 you were stuck at 795 kph. I suspect that this because combustion engines underperform at high RPMs. A potential solution could be to switch to manual shifting to shift to the next gear.
I'm still figuring things out myself and hopefully, these tips will help you to break the sound barrier in your next video. Good luck!

Problem 1 of 3: The teleport seems to (no matter where you enter a map edge) put you at the _center_ of the opposite edge.
1.A: You (probably) want to start at an edge, in order to potentially have one less teleportation event at speed.
1.B: You'll want to aim just slightly inside of the map corner, so that you hit an end of the opposite map edge. Go in a 1-to-2.1 direction (25°-ish from straight). Luckily there's squares on the ground that will help you keep that heading. It looks like that will take you comfortably past the city.

Slimmer car with more power will have more chance to brake the sound barrier. You need to be rear wheel drive and your rear wheels need to be slightly larger than the front ones. The best way to to get a lot of power in this game is to stack engines, you can stack the small combustion engine by putting two "axises" parallel to each other and stacking the engines on them, and the best way to stack the big combustion engine is to put them in a "boxer" formation or a "flat v" formation

@@stableton can use that effect with planetaries going into 2shift with 3shifts fairly effectively. since the whole axle that is connected to a gearshift is considered one piece with the gearshift, you can have different gear ratios being input into another gearshift. you can effectively double the amount of gears you can cycle thru, allowing you to keep the acceleration up for longer. you can add three in total on a gearshift, allowing 3x the gears, but it's unclear if the effect is a glitch or intended feature. experimenting with it may lead you to some very interesting builds :P

I've reached mach 2 in my top speed attempts. A couple of tips:
    1. Air resistance is one of if not the most important factor at really high speeds. You need to make your vehicle as narrow and low as you possible can. Every block counts. Length is free real estate.
    2. You need more power. Remove the electric engine and add several more combustion engines with turbo's. The electric engine is useless in this kind of top speed setup because it caps at a lower RPM than the combustion engines. When the electric engines reach their cap they shut down and do nothing at all, so for a large part of the torque curve (and crucially, when you get near the top speed and your combustion engines are giving their peak power), your electric engine is literally turned off and just dead weight.
    3. Try different tire sizes. Wheel radius is essentially an extension of your final gear ratio and thus affects top speed, but keep in mind air resistance.
    4. As for a clean trajectory so you don't hit buildings/hills: Just drive south following the road but before reaching the southern border move TWO lanes (grid squares) to the left (aim for the center of the second grid square left of the road, at the southern edge of the map). This will line you up perfectly with the road again on the north side of the map.
Note that looping around the edge of the map teleports you to the opposite side, so any corrections you make to your trajectory need to be MIRRORED. If you end up teleporting too far to the left and miss the road, aim more to the right next time around, and vice versa. The central road is slightly offset from the actual center of the map, hence you need to aim two squares to the left. With some practice you can find a trajectory that is ever so slightly angled to the left where you can repeatedly loop around the map and drive over the road and the speed trap repeatedly with minimal or zero steering.

    @davidrobin8700 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

If you wanted to know how the aerodynamics work:
    1. Each block has their own wind resistance engines tile < flat block tile
    2. Because of #1, slanted blocks are the most preferred
    3. It only accounts for the very first blocks in the front that are hit.
    4. Because of #3, adding a slanted block where the wind wouldn't have been hit makes it worse. (Normally even if it means that you have a slanted block where it wasn't before. Creation of tiles for air resistance is almost always bad)
    5. After every block check the aerodynamics. The menu does not refresh on its own. Many times it seems that things should be better when they aren't, or vice versa.
These are things ive noticed through experimentation! Hope this is helpful

okay so i have an idea scrap man to have more room for the engine/power source and be able to use gears in the empty space on the left side of the car you made which means you're going to have more power and you will be able to put gears and stabilize the weight more easily and efficiently.
front wheeled car's engine is mounted sideways inorder for engineers be able to use bigger engine in a width area so the car is not going to be so long like most of the cars you built in the game, so with a corner gear the output/drive shaft is going to be on the left or the right side depending on how you're going to build the engine, and if it's in the left for example you'll be able to put gears on left side, in the the middle and the right side (3 shafts in total) and connect the output to the rear wheels with a corner gear.

Weight doesn’t really matter when trying to go for sound barrier aerodynamics more important
you want the gear ratio to give max torque (Nm) just before sound barrier on the final gear
you primarily want to use combustion engines because of the higher rpm allowing for a lower gear ratio
aerodynamic is very important you can use the aerodynamic wings and place them in front of flat surfaces and that decreases the drag
Should be around 60 with 100 the highest it should be and with my Mach 1 vehicle it sat at 47
Horsepower you want horsepower to be 1000 minimum with a maximum at 10k if you can’t get Mach 1 with 10k then horsepower isn’t the problem
I personally used the skinny rubber wheels because they create less drag but other wheels still work

Problem 2 of 3: You just need a higher engines-per-cross-section-area ratio in order to not get overwhelmed by drag early. And if you had a higher engines-per-unit-of-dead-weight ratio, you'd not need as many separate gears.
    2.A: Add more engines.
2.B: Reduce your cross section. Those 5 wide gears that take the power off the different planetary stages could be 1-wide gears instead.
2.C: You can probably get away with taking power out after 2, 3 and 4 planetary gear sets (and dump the extra gear switcher). You only spend 6 seconds in first gear, and you'd really not loose much if that was 12 or 15 seconds instead.
2.D: Reduce your weight anywhere you can. Your 4 planetary gears will probably do more than the size of your wheels or any amount of extra gears. And with not a lot of acceleration and no cornering, your grip shouldn't matter. I'd just go with the _lightest_ wheels (and road suspension). And I'd check if connecting the front and back with _axles_ is lighter weight than making that connection with _beams._

Problem 3 of 3: The "optimal rev range" for the electric and combustion engines seem quite misaligned.
3.A: You probably want to connect them with a small gear on the axle through the combustion engines and a medium gear on the axle through the electrics. That would also allow you to put 2 (or more) of those electrics into your drive train.

Your engine isn't supplying enough torque to achieve your top speed, add more engines, my advice would be adding 2 more blaze 1000s in the same configuration you've already used, then mesh several of the electric motors on the front side with gears
You can also minimise the torque steering by adding the weight blocks to the side without the gear linkages, extra weight improves stability massively in Screwdrivers

It took me 6 hours too break the aound barrier. The map transition is brutal, but there are sweet spots on certain parts of the border. Tips that came to mind:
    1) Way more power. Use many electric engines in series.
    2) Orient your gears vertically in order to improve wind profile and balance.
    3) The first suspension is the best im terms of wind profile.
    4) Plan for other activities while you wait for the game to load a successful vehicle. 20 minutes minimum :/

  • @bouwser02

You just need a lot more engine power to overcome the wind resistance at high speed. I broke the sound barrier fairly easily with a single gear that had the top of the power curve at mach speed and 20-30 of the best gas engines. The gas engines are ideal because their power increases at higher rpms which is when you need the power to overcome the wind resistance. Also keep your vehicle as long and skinny as possible.

I managed 1280Km/h by making a noodle of a car that is basically something around 20 gas engines strapped to a 3 gear gearbox with planetary gear sets (similar to what ScrapMan has done) and some extra gears to make the ratio right and the thinnest large rubber wheels with the smallest suspension... It takes 2 lengths of the map to reach max speed... and the warps require some luck (found it to be more stable by going south on the map where it usually teleports me to the top but a bit to east - forcing me to curve a bit to be aligned to the road)...

Regarding how aerodynamics seem to work in Screw Drivers: Each time a line of wind has to shift up/down/left/right, the air resistance rises. The thing that tends to cause the wind to shift around is the gearbox, since the wind will often hit one gear, shift left/right to avoid it, and then just hit another gear. Using the aesthetic blocks isn't strictly necessary, but keeping the air flowing around the vehicle rather than through it is the best way to reduce your air resistance, and this is easiest to do with the aesthetic blocks (particularly the small 45-degree blocks, in my experience).
In the case of this vehicle, I suspect it's less about the air shifting back and forth (though that's likely still present), and more about how much the wind is being forced to shift in order to go around certain parts. For example, if the wind hits one of the big gears right next to the axle, it'll have to move over two spaces to get around it. This seems to be calculated as worse than just shifting one time, but twice. In other words, wedges are bestest.
(Also, in my experience, the performance gains of low wind resistance far outweigh the detriments of added weight, no pun intended)

Although simple, I liked the straight planetary gear setup. Just extend each axle segment by one, so there's a gap between each planet gear part. Then just connect an electric engine (2nd tier) to each stage. Should apply enough torque to speed you up faster. If not, extend the gap again and add another. Makes use of the way engines activate/disconnect just like the gearing system, but without needing the complex gears to deliver power from a central source to the end.

Someone incorrectly stated that supersonic vehicles are not possible. This is very much so untrue.
I've made a few myself, with gas engines only even (hybrid really doesnt work well in this game due to the unrealistic way the electric motors work), and there are many on the workshop.
You need a proper gearbox, some decent power, and you want to have a very small frontal area for aerodynamics.
I've done it with a vehicle with 76 air resistance too, so you don't even need to get super fancy with that. Just chuck a dozen to a couple dozen engines because you will indeed need a lot of power. I think I did it with just over 1300 horse power using banks of 6 engines to have as small a frontal area as possible.
Manual shifting (you can set it in the settings) really helps as the shifts don't work as they should and if you try to use automatic, the gears just stop shifting after about 6th gear.
You can be awd, no problem, no need for rear only or different size wheels or any of that. Just proper gearing, enough engines and a small frontal profile.

In my experience with gear ratio and power you have the right idea but you should have the biger gears after the planetary gears going into small or mediums so you get better gear ratio. Also if you would switched your main power going from the axle connected to your engines to a gear ratio would work better too.

The best transmission should look like a y=1/x graph because the acceleration in the stats is the area of the graph but the time it takes to switch gears takes some time and slows you down. Because of this there is an optimal amount of gears which depends but I think it is six or less gears

    • @-aid4084
      @-aid4084 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@tomasmokrys4635 that all depends on the number of gears and the spacing. So there actually isn't an optimal number of gears for all applications. My 12 speed transmission I made has too many gears, because it spends more time waiting to upshift on the first 4 gears because they're so low. But, they are useful gears, because of the traction control in the game. The more gears a transmission has, the more like a convex curve the torque graph looks like. 4 isn't enough for gas motors, maybe for electric, and 6 is exceptable for gas motors. But it's not optimal.

3 tips/ideas ScrapMan: Tight and even gearing, nitro maximalization, engine gearing offset.
Tight and even gearing - try to maximize your acceleration by making 2 separate gearboxes (as You tried in this video) with 3 gears each. Note that gaer sizes are not 1,2,3 but 4,5,8 and those are sizes used for ratio calculation. From my excel file I calculated that optimal and easy proportion between gear in first gearbox should be gear2/gear1=1.25 or 1.28 while for second gearbox it should be …=2. This is compact, easy to achieve 9 gear system.
Nitro maximalization- try using 2nd gen. comb. engines to have small weight and HUGE amount of nitros, they give large boost of power at thin range of rpm. I believe You can abuse it with tight gearing.
engine gearing offset - even with tight gearing nitro power surge is thin, so I advise you create 2 sets of engines connected to main shaft (and from there to gearbox) with very similar ratios, 1/eng2=1.08 is achievable easily. This will widen the nitro surge just enough cover your entire toque/speed graph instead of making large peaks followed by valleys
    Hope this helps

[step 0] You can stack gears vertically. Meaning you can try to narrow your width and make a longer car. In the goals to halve your frontal cross section.
[step 1] as your first iteration: you had a theoretical top speed of over 6000km/hr. You want to take that super high RPM and improve the torque with a shifter. Maybe you need 12000km/hr theoretical top speed to get enough torque. - In that one could calculate this speed. However just iterate a few times.
[step 2] if you are not comfortable driving back through the urban road furniture (along the road), then drive to from the start until you get to the generic repeating pattern (following the line that contains the road). Thus you can turn 90° and drive only in empty space, as you can follow the grid markings to avoid too much deviation from your new driving vector.

Your inclination is in fact correct, Although the power difference isn't all that great. Rwd tends to have Overall higher power than awd or 4wd. Since some of the energy in the system is converted to heat through friction, adding in a transfer case on top of a front axle takes away a very small amount of the overall power. Additionally you have the added weight of the transfer case and front axle. In conclusion awd will give you better off the line acceleration due to the advantage of higher grip, but rwd will generally have the higher top speed do two less energy loss throughout the drive train.

First thing, you really don't have to use so many gears for the 3 speed shifter. You can use 2 large, 2 medium, and 2 small gears on two axles and it'll work great, like this with the shifter at lower right:
    L S
    | M
    M |
    | L
    |
    S
Now, some things I've learned in my own attempts at breaking the sound barrier (I've only gotten to 1060 so far). The map seems to mirror both your North-South and East-West coordinates, so if you were hitting the edge at 1000, 10 you'd come back in at -1000, -10. Unfortunately the road is just off center, and you have very little time to adjust once it actually starts showing buildings. But what does work is to parallel the road well to the side of the buildings, you'll then stay parallel to the road and just alternate sides. I've also found that the large gear generates far too much drag, I ended up almost doubling my drag by using it, and drag seems to be the main thing. And finally, use lots of engines, I saw someone saying they'd done it with 12 of the largest piston engines, so I've been trying with 16 and thinking I might want to use more.
Edit: So I did pull it off, with a few different variations on a design. Generally a 3 speed shifter with planetary gears followed by 2 2 speed shifters, driven by 16-20 of the top combustion engine, and driving all 4 small suspensions, with just under 50 wind resistance. I also determined that following the road requires moving over by exactly two of the empty circle patterns on the ground, but having enough control to do that at 1200 kph is its own challenge and it costs 10-20 kph each time if you can.

More power (hp) equals more torque.
Your theoretical top speed is good. Just add more power so that the power delivery system can handle the power needed to make it there.
You can “only” change the top speed via gears. The top speed without gears is capped by the motors rpm, we cannot add more rpm to the motors.
That means if your train line of gears have a certain ratio, then the amount of engines WONT change the top speed cause it’s already maxing out its rpm. BUT adding more power via more motors WILL increase the power delivered via that train line of gears. Giving it more torque throughout every gear. Cappish? 🤪
    Easy peasy.

    My suggestions:
I think you're power limited and need more engines.
For the gear switch you could have the different gear ratios in between the planetary gears (planetary gear - large - medium - small - planetary gear - etc) if you can figure that out.
For aerodynamics it's highly likely to be based on the surface area on the front of the vehicle, so the smaller footprint you have looking from the front likely the less air resistance there will be, so try to build as thin as possible.

  • @ShadowWolf2508plays

Wind resistance in screw drivers is calculated pretty weird, the more times air needs to be pushed out of the way, the more drag you'll have. That sounds normal but the amount of blocks air gets pushed up doesn't actually matter, so the best way to reduce your wind resistance is to have a flat wall infront of your car that covers every part behind it. This has been tested by me and a bunch of other people in the discord and is the easiest way to reduce drag

The best speed I've had so far in my supersonic attempts is 1177km/h and that was with a brute force approach with lots of engines. 4 E-motors driving a central shaft with medium to small gears then a fifth e-motor and seven IC engines driving that. in this approach You will always have some torque at each stage due to the each of the electric motors being in its power band when that stage is below the max rpm. you will continue to have low acceleration at high speed but you will hop up the low end acceleration.
also... you really should think about the vertical as well as horizontal when it comes to gearing.

    I got 1460+ km/h.
4 planetary gears, plus a single small-to-medium regular gear reduction. Theoretical max speed of 1503.
Chassis is twin runs of four 15x beams spaced five apart (so you can fit a 5-long beam between them), connected on the outside with 1x2 beams (they don't appear to increase drag as they're behind the front wheels). Ten turbo-volt TX 300 (red) electric motors with double capacitors, in pairs facing each other longitudinally, between the 15x beams, offset to one side, with the power transmission going down a shaft alongside them. The smallest, most basic suspension, "Suspension Small". I have both front and rear suspensions a single space apart (connected by a 3-long shaft) with a medium gear in there to transmit power into the narrow gap. Racing Wheel Small. No shifting, only single speed.
Total wind resistance of 39. The car's as long as the build platform. Could probably extend it further with more power and slightly higher gearing for possible speed gain.
I had some iffy bumps during the map wrap-around teleportation but it never caused me to crash or lose much speed.

    thanks for the idea,
I created a car which can go 1590km/h.
    ~1230 km/h is a nice sound effect :3
