Scotland History Tours is here for people who want to learn about Scottish history and get ideas for Scottish history tours. I try to make videos which tell you tales from Scotland's past and give you information about key dates in Scottish history and historical places to visit in Scotland. Not all videos are tales from Scotland's history, some of them are about men from Scotland's past or women from Scotland's past. Basically the people who made Scotland. @@raajeweler6569 In the Highlands (Hielands) they spoke Scots Gaelic which was a dialect of Irish Gaelic (OK, Sorry! Let's not fight when we have the Sassenachs to deal with!) Until the 17th century the literary language was the same; later the "demotic" speech went in slightly different directions. But in the 18th century, both versions of Gaelic were referred to (sometimes) as "Erse". And YES: the "Scotii" were an Irish tribe that colonised south western Pictland (Dál Riada) back in the 5th century CE. So "really" all they Sco's are just geographically misplaced Ahrish!!!!

Learning of the reason(s) for the massacre taking place is shocking enough, but putting names and individual family stories to it was truly heartbreaking. This is the history we should be taught in schools. Thanks Bruce.

I was born and brought up in Tranent. It was never mentioned to us all the way through school, indeed it was only when the sculpture was unveiled in the Civic Square that got me looking for further info. I did have a book many years ago which was both sad and informative, and really opened my eyes to the whole sad tale. Thanks for your video, more power to your elbow sir !!!
I grew up in Paisley. The Paisley Canal disaster was never mentioned in school. I was aware of the Glen Cinema disaster but only through the living memory of my parents. And there are others. The point I'm making is that there's more history to teach than hours in the day and with limited time, you can only teach so much in the hope that the children will get interested enough to find out more for themselves about their local and national history.

Saving that vital detail for the end was paramount to painting the picture of this great social injustice - They're all rich men's wars, aren't they? ...and the working class is always caught up in it 💔.

My great grandad was born in Tranent and brought up and lived his life in Edinburgh, Dalkeith and Leith. None of this history about Tranent or any of these other places was ever taught to us at the school. Thank you Bruce!
As a social studies teacher here in Newfoundland, Canada, I love telling the real human stories behind the "facts." My students love it, and it's what makes history truely fascinating. It's also one of the reasons why I love listening to your stories, Bruce. (Plus the jokes :)!)
Your really sticking your neck out! I have heard MANY MANY examples of history and political teachers who end up in prison for teaching the "wrong" history.
Brings tears to my eyes! How so appalling and evil actions could take place, so long ago but I feel it's like yesterday. Thank you again for bringing this piece of history out into the open.
In my job as a delivery driver I have passed the woman with the drum numerous times and always wondered what the story was behind it.
A very interesting, and horrific, part of history that's too often been covered up, as so many barbaric acts have been.

I think I know very much of the Glencoe massacre story and had the very uncomfortable feeling when I camped near one of the settelments on the anniversary. the massacre was not compacted to one area as the can were dispersed along the glen. Most killed by troops were on the clan chief area which is currently invercoe campsite. The clan graves are on the island just along the loch. sorry Bruce , I have a few whiskys in me so names so names and timelines are confussed at the moment. I got to this after watching a few glen coe massacre videos including yours which well sent me to look at your Tarent massacre vid. As a Scot I was surprised this was not well known I never heard of Tarent.Thank you Bruce. I found this more terrible than the glen coe massacre story though they still have my heart ( my clan is mcintyre and close friends to mcDonald )
Any massacre is caused by 1 group being armed and the other not.
The reason is sometime never established.
The guilty are rarely punished because, strangely enough, they normally originate in the ranks of the authorities.
Still ongoing to this day.
I knew nothing of this case Bruce, being a west-coaster.

I love that you say the names of the people who fell victim to these atrocities, rather than saying "oh yeah a dozen people where gunned down", it just makes it all the more real and impactful.
"Read the Riot Act" was one of my father's most favorite expressions.
Jackie Crookston is one of my husband's forebears - very proud of her sacrifice. I only discovered her role when doing family tree research a few years ago. We live in Australia and both of us have proud Scottish heritage (mine is via the Sutherland Highland clearances)

I grew up in Ormiston and went to high school in Tranent. I never knew about this. Prestonpans yes, but not this. It is truly awful. So sad, when you listed the victims and the manner of their demise it brought tears to my eyes.

As something of a student of Irish history this story comes as no great surprise. Brilliant video have only just found this channel, was recommended I assume because I was looking at some old videos about the Tan War

I grew up in a poor fishing and logging town. After high school, boys had a couple of options to earn a living. Become a fisherman and work on the North Pacific Ocean, work in the woods as a logger or join the military. College was an option for very few. In my graduation class of less than 100, and half were male, about 12 joined the military. Fortunately, there were no active wars at the time, so they all survived their enlistment.
The poor and working classes have always carried the burden of military duties, which may explain why so many wealthy people think wars are the solution to world problems, instead of diplomacy.

My Grand Father fought with the Canadian Expedidionary Force. He was always proud to say that he served in the Black Watch, the Candian Black Watch. I am proud of his service. Thankyou for this video, so good to see, although so sad. I recently discovered Jackie (Joanna) was my 4th great grandmother. She was also one who fell that day. It got me looking into the mining history, so many children working down the mines. They were very poor and did not have an easy life in those days.

Brilliant…greetings from Perth Western Australia….the past few years we have witnessed the stories and history of the slave trade and injustice,inequality and contempt for our fellow human beings and it’s near always about the racial differences yet as I was taught by my Musselburgh born father what always comes to mind was the injustice,inequality and contempt held for our own kind along economic lines was despicable and disgusting…and still prevails sadly to this day.

So much of Scotlands history is hidden from us. There was a village in North Angus called Burnside. It was cleared just before WW1. There is a forest planted over the sins of the landlords. In the middle of that forest is a Celtic cross, put up by two Canadians who were born there. The first line reads, to the destitute people of Burnside

Nice one. I'd never heard of the Trenent massacre. Reminds me of the Peterloo massacre and many others across the empire, drunken cavalry and the absolute contempt of the British authorities for the poor. And yes, I'm familiar with the Riot Act.
My stepfather served with the Blackwatch Highland Regiment during WWII, & he served in Nth Africa against Irwin Rommel's Africa Corps, & he was the inspiration for me joining the Australian Regular Army, R. I. P John Comrie McDiarmid. WO 1, R.S.M, Blackwatch Highland Regiment

Yes you have mentioned the Riot Act before, and that was the first time I ever knew what it meant.
"Read the Riot Act" refers to the statement in the Riot Act 1715 (1 Geo. 1. St. 2 c. 5) which told people "to disperse themselves and to peaceably depart to their habitations" upon the "pains contained in this Act". It was repealed in 1973 in the UK, and 1987 here in New Zealand (where it was last used [to no effect] at the Queen Street Riots in 1984).
Never knew of this massacre. An incredibly sad story.
