- Scotland had some famous pirates. This one was as colourful as he was complex and intriguing... and probably not from the era you'd imagine. Was he even Scottish? Scottish history tour guide, Bruce Fummey tells the tale of Scotland's most successful pirate.

Scotland History Tours is here for people who want to learn about Scottish history and get ideas for Scottish history tours. I try to make videos which tell you tales from Scotland's past and give you information about key dates in Scottish history and historical places to visit in Scotland. Not all videos are tales from Scotland's history, some of them are about men from Scotland's past or women from Scotland's past. Basically the people who made Scotland. From April 2020 onward I've tried to give ideas for historic days out in Scotland. Essentially these are days out in Scotland for adults who are interested in historical places to visit in Scotland.
As a Scottish history tour guide people ask: Help me plan a Scottish holiday, or help me plan a Scottish vacation if your from the US. So I've tried to give a bit of history, but some places of interest in Scotland as well.

But who was the greatest Scottish pirate? 😂
🤣😂🤣
Your ability to switch from "Ram it right up them!" to your soothing guide voice is astonishing
😜🤣🤣
Here's a pirate joke, why was it hard for the pirate to learn the alphabet, they had a hard time getting over the high c's. I made this one up, I once told a peg leg pirate a scary story, it shook his timber.
You should be made to walk the plank for that
I thought it was going to be the problem they have with Aaaaaarghs
@@ScotlandHistoryTours 😂
To make it even better, switch "learning the alphabet" for "learning to sing". ;-)
My grandson told it better.
What is a pirate's favorite letter of the alphabet?
The "R"?
No, it's the "C"
There’s no F’in Lemmings! 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
😜
That’s because they all jumped over the cliff
@@DylanTheMattressMan - 😂😂😂
That was a truly great story Bruce. Well told and we'll conceived. That is just not something you're going to get in any old classroom. Thanks for passing it on to us! Good morning from America!
I never forget to tune in to these remarkable small history stories. The delivery and passion is clearly from a professional. Keep up the great work.
Ah thanks man
Love it when you have footage of my hometown, Berwick. And remind us that we once played a more important part in things.
Loads of history there for sure

The moral of the story:
Catching Crabs is a bit of a problem.
It's easier than you think😜
@@ScotlandHistoryTours Yikes....
"The Phlegm really stuck in Edwards throat"...👀
😜
I hope someday I get to go to Scotland! I'll not be coming back here to America that's for sure!
Nothing is exciting as Saturday Story time with Bruce 🥳😀😊 moreso as we draw the line at Geordies, but don't say I said so 👀
😂
What a series of twists and turns in this man’s life of adventure. Very well done history! Thanks very much sir.
My pleasure!
You always make me laugh with your jokes and innuendos ! 😂
Lovely to see such an apolitical view of Scotish history. A totally unbiased, neutral, and fair perspective. Well done, sir.
FREEDOM 😜
@ScotlandHistoryTours
You are a fantastic storyteller. I have 3 questions. 1) If you could go back in time in Scottish history, which event would you go back to witness and why? 2) or, who would you go back to meet, what would you say and why? 3) or, if you could change just 1 event to turn the tide in favor of Scotland and out of English rule, what would it be and how would you go about it?
I'll contact you when I build my time travel machine. The tardis was occupied.
Your answers would make 3 great videos though I have to say, all of your videos are fantastic. I listen to your stories often. Thank you very much.
Thanks Bruce
I'd never heard of Crabbe before. The man had an interesting life to say the least.
To think how we complained in the 21st Centry about our problems with the Supply Chain issues between the Covid Shutdown & the cargo ship stuck sideways in a major Canal was nothing compared to ships being captured with all those various products on board.
Bruce.
You are a bad man.
I have a migraine today. "No F in Flemings" "I know they all..." hurt my head when I laughed a lot.
Thank you though.
😜
i have learnt so much about Scotland and i honestly have to say i always want to learn much more!
I'm glad you are so good at telling true stories.
And with humor!😜👏👏👏
You need to cover the history of James Douglas " the Black Douglas". That guy was a bad ass dude. Also an ancestor of mine. Love your channel.
He mentions him at the 3:00 mark..
Almost thought there was another Scottish hero i was unaware of ...until about the 13th minute....when Judas was reborn... Great Story Bruce 👏
😆
Bruce, sir, I can't believe how green the grass is in Scotland in the Winter. Here in South Carolina it is brown and dead from November to March, except for some course wild native grasses.
And the weeds; they are amazingly green & healthy. Myrtle Beach area resident.
I love history and I love learning it from you. You teach it so well. Keep it up!
Bruce, you had me at " Let me tell you a story."
😜
You brought up pirates, not me. Scotsman John Paul Jones, fighting for American independence, was charged with piracy for his attack on Whitehaven. I believe that was the last time an enemy invaded Britain. I was in the museum when I saw that JPJ had been pardoned by Mayor Geoffrey Blackwell. Which is how my brother spells his name!
As an American I was hoping this would be about John Paul Jones, but I'm here for the story.
We keep expecting stories to be about us, blame Hollywood.
There's no f in lemmings!
Love it! 🤣
😜
You touring the Commomwealth, teaching the facts, as you do...See you Alberta, Canada??
I'll be there
Thank-you fer a wee treat, the video was a great wee history lesson.. wish ma history teachers long ago had your skills. Anything on Scotland getting the grandslam in the 6 nations...
Maman.
🤣I could tell the tale of my hangover on the 1990 weekend
I'd never heard of Crabbe before. Thank you.
Another excellent video. The convoluted story of John Crabbe is fascinating and, like your other videos, well told.
Many thanks!
There's no F in lemmings.... near gutted masel.... brilliant
As someone from Flanders thank you for this video very interesting!
Your always have the best in Scottish history .. hand's down ! Thank you for all you do !
My family were indentured in VA in the 17th century for what could technically be considered piracy. Interesting stuff.
As was mine.
There's nobody I like to hear history from more so
Always an entertaining watch, thank you 👍
Thanks 👍
Hey Bruce
have you done a story on Scottish golden age pirates?
No, but I'm sur I will. This is a long term project.
Well Duncarron are doing a Pirate Weekend at the beginning of June for a back drop as a thought
Also I am working a Glasgow Cathedral this summer lots of stories there
Great video as always Mr.Fummey. I liked it very much as it is your most "Flemmisch" video date. But I have a question for you : where there knights templar at the battle of Bannockburn and did they saved the day for the Scots? Greetings from Flanders and there is no "F" in lemmings!
I don't believe so
One of my favourite historical Scottish characters is Thomas Cochrane. Reading his endeavours made me think he had missed his calling as a pirate
True
I might be biased, cos I was named after him, but I'd argue the greatest pirate out of Scotland would be John-Paul Jones..
th-cam.com/video/H3rMtMJfewU/w-d-xo.html
Yet another terrific tale. Thank you.
Oh, and victuals.... pronounced 'vittles'. ;-)
It is now. Was it then?
@@ScotlandHistoryTours From what I have gleaned from the best etymological sources I could find... very probably. It stems from the same Latin root as Vit-ality. The C is a relatively recent artifact.
I saw this and screeched to a halt with merry cries. A pirate video is the perfect touch to my weekend!
Were there any Scottish female pirates?
Great video Bruce. Is there a chance of a video in the future about Sir Andrew Wood? Would love to hear you tell his story.
Yet another interesting story told with your usual humour. I’ll be in Berwick on the 13th of next month. I’ll drink a toast to you 🌞
Splendid
A pirate, a buccaneer, and a privateer walked into a pub, and the bartender said: "What is this, some kind of a joke?" ☠
I always look forward to your videos keep them coming ☺
Yay! Thank you!
@Brian Connaughton
Same here , he (i.e. Mr. Fummey) always has something new to bring us into the Scottish History Tours table
Wow! What a story. Thank you, Bruce.
Is that a jelly knife youre holding??! 😊 so cute!
Well it certainly wasn't Kidd, poor bugger basically bumbled into piracy by misfortune.
Sounds like my career
@@ScotlandHistoryTours I'll join your crew if you have a ship!
Another great presentation!

Luv it!!💃❤💃Scots we've eh!😂 But it be known..? Lizzy the First, was the biggest Pirate of all!
Doh..predictive text lah! Meant to be..'Scots wa'hae!😉
As a Flemish history nerd with an enormous love for Scotland, I really love your video's! Especially, offcourse, the ones with a link to Flanders 😉
Fun fact about te battle you mentioned in the beginning that makes it even more amazing: a huge part of the Flemish army weren't even trained footsoldiers. They were serfs and craftsmen! They were being seriously abused and downtrodden by the rich merchants they worked for, who's power and wealth knew no bounderies and who were the best of friends with the French King. They rebelled against their employers/abusers and around the same time the Count of Flanders, who didn't agree with the privileges these merchants were given, rebelled against the French King. He was captured by the French, and in response to that the Counts' family and loyal vassals openly chose to side with the serfs and the craftsmen in their rebellion. An alliance between the highest nobility and the poorest of the poor! Such an alliance had never happend before, let alone it being a successful one!
We still celebrate their victory on the 11th of July, the Day of the Flemish Community.
How fortunes change, loved the big smiley face on the building behind you, was that deliberate.
Excellent ,cheers Bruce !
A great story, really well told.
What a great story! I really love your presentations. 👍
Thank you so much!
Another excellent history lesson.I appreciate how you help us understand how complicated things were.
Thanks for sharing; take care
Thank you too
Sir High Admiral Andrew Wood's life was very interesting also. He is known as Scotland's Nelson and lived from 1455 to 1515.
And he was lucky enough to not witness Flodden.
Love your enthusiasm for underdogs Bruce!
Doesn’t everyone have that?
Please come to Wellington NZ too. We'd love to have you here.
Sorry, maybe next time
A'reyt Bruce. The trouble with privateers is that they were in it for the money and make much better villains than heros. I think I will stick with my childhood hero, Alan Breck Stewart, who sorted out the seafaring baddies, even if it was just a story. Today's story was a goody though, as always on this channel.
Always best to sort a flem problem out before a trip away. Mind you, I thought we were about to get a rendition of "When the Boat Comes In" at one point.
Love your channel.
I thought that you would talk about John Paul Jones. He was a Scot who turned American rebel & is widely celebrated today as the father of the US Navy. He stole so many English ships & reaked havoc on these ships. 1 of the towns in Sheffeild England, gave him an honorary pardon in 1998.

Great to watch this, sat in a hotel room in Brugge :)
Not sure I can share your Flemings jokes here with the Flemish staff :)
ah my ancestor Crabbeke 🤘
Hi Bruce
Enjoyed the video as always
For some reason having watched this video I am prompted to ask if you have done anything on the Darien Expedition?
Many thanks Bruce!

Thanks for interpreting what they would have said.

Way off topic Bruce - I really liked The Lost King. You were really good in it.
Yay
@@ScotlandHistoryTours Did you get to meet Phillipa Langley? I admire her.
Imaging, watching Scottish history and learn about your own country... There are a few details my history teacher forgot to mention and it is not the 1302 squirmish, obviously
Possibly the most influential pirate in Scottish history was an Englishman, Hugh atte Fen. He's the guy who captured James I and handed him over to Henry IV. :-(
Depending on what the definition of a pirate is the greatest Scottish pirate is....
John Paul Jones.
Ruari the Turbulent is the greatest Scottish pirate who ever lived
Still no Sydney?
I was hoping there would be a show, Sydney has graves of some of members from the Radical war who were transported over here.
I'll be in Sydney, I just didn't manage to get a show organised
@@ScotlandHistoryTours go for a pint then?
Possibly. We'll be there round about 11-14th April. Still to sort out details
We talk about Tavish Dhu (also known as Black Tom) in county Antrim. What facts are there on him ? He was meant to be associated with Edwards decision he needed a crown like his brother.

Hmmm John Crabbe, I knew about Grace O’Malley and some of my Scottish ancestors were inclined to raid Man for cattle, but that is just cattle stealing by sea something they had apparently decided to take up when stealing cattle from friends and neighbors got too easy or maybe unprofitable. Piracy is promised a twenty first century renaissance since the US has decided to stop guarding the sea lanes for the first time since World War II!
9:00 Damn, if ye want t' be kleppin in Vancouver, I'll fork o'er a wee bit o' the falthy lucre jist t' see ya.
Maybe next year
@@ScotlandHistoryTours That would be amazing. Fancy a wee dram?
Let's get the trip organised first😂
Piracy is a Celtic tradition .😊
The Pirates of Wales and Cornwall often overshadow the Pirates of Scotland and Ireland in the modern memory. Many forgetting that the Scots and Irish were just if not more successful, and a few mer equally brutal ends as well.
Dalzeel, Barton, Gow, Wimund, and later, Ruari Og MacNeil of Barra all plundered ships from Scotland, Ireland, Jolly England and the countries across the English Channel long before Kidd and Teach, and were. It's just a more profitable version o' Cattle Reiving after all. 🤪
Ah I thought the video was going to be about Ruari the Turbulent and the MacNeils of Barra clan
Maybe one day
