This is very helpful! (along with the other Series' videos). Regarding your comment about greys that mix well or don't mix well, from my reading on Daniel Smith, the inorganic pigments don't mix well with the organic ones. D.S. uses this to their advantage in developing interesting mixes like Undersea Green. With your library of paints, it would be interesting to come up with a video on desirable inorganic/organic mixes. Just an idea for your copious spare time ;-).
I have never purchased Burnt Sienna from Daniel Smith. All this time, I have used Quinacridone Burnt Orange as a Burnt Sienna. It mixes with Fr. Ultramarine to create really nice darks. Daniel Smith doesn't sell the Essential 7 set with Susie Short's name on it. But, it used to. The set contained 7 15-ml tubes of paint. It was the most affordable way to purchase those 7 colors from Daniel Smith.
I have Daniel Smith's Quin Burnt Orange but have never thought to replace Burnt Sienna for it. It's darker than Monte Amiata I suspect but now that you mention it I'm super curious to try it out.
I personally prefer quin burnt orange to burnt sienna cause honestly burnt sienna just doesn't spark joy for me if that isn't a weird way to describe like I just hate looking at it for whatever reason and I dunno i seem to prefer luminescent colours more if that makes sense and plus I have burnt umber so I don't think I need another version of PBr7
Hello Teoh, I am currently changing my studio pallet and have many of the series two colors you described in today’s video. I also love M.A. natural sienna and am looking for a transparent cool red so will give Pyrrol Crimson a go with swatches and see how that works. Great video !
Series 2 paints (from Daniel Smith) that I have in my palette (that you don't have in yours).. I still have a couple of tubes of Quin Gold (PO49), I use Quin Burnt Orange instead of Burnt Sienna, Permanent Alazarin Crimson and Quin. Pink... I too LOVE Hansa Yellow Medium, French Ultramarine and Sap Green... I also have a few Holbein colors and Schmincke colors in my palette. I do enjoy your color study videos very much.
I really enjoy this small vid series. Great idea! Is it possible to do a mashup of this series with the granulating one, i.e. how to make a versatile palette of only granulating colours? (For people who are all about the granulation life? LOL) Would be a cool end capping video for your 'granulating colours' video series too.
Awesome video, your voice is so calming and relaxing. I never used Daniel Smith paints because I can't find them in my country (in Eastern Europe) and paying for shipping would be a killer. Plus I got enough paints for the rest of my life anyway. Have a good day!
Great series, really helpful to look at colors by series. I think DS Series 2 Anthraquinoid Red PR177 is also an excellent alternative to Pyrrol Crimson (or Alizarin Crimson), it's currently my favorite crimson mixing color. And just want to mention that LF II isn't fugitive, LF IV is fugitive [ ASTM lightfastness ratings: LF I=Excellent (100+ years), LF II=Very Good (100 years), LF III=Fair (50-70 years), LF IV=Fugitive (15-20 years) ] although, the ratings don't always reflect the reality for some colors like Prussian Blue, Rhodonite and a few others in many brands, they're more of a lab rating than tested in the sun :)
Hi Teoh, I noticed that the ferrules of some of your brushes have lost their chrome coating, I realize they have had lots of use 😉, but was wondering if you think that is from the chlorine in your water or from the chemical makeup of the paint in the rinse water? Thank you for the videos you create. I have learned so much from you.
Thank you so much for another great video Teoh! I was curious if you've ever tried out Daniel Smith's Manganese Blue Hue for that Cerulean slot? It's Series 1 and Daniel Smith has replaced the original Manganese (PB33) with PB15. I know that's Pthalo Blue but Daniel Smith's site says it's a good subsitute for Cerulean Blue.
I've tried Manganese Blue Hue. It's more comparable to Cerulean than Phthalo Blue. www.parkablogs.com/picture/transparent-yellow-quin-coral-manganese-blue-limited-palette
I like to see the colours used to create the mixture. You can of course mix in palette first before applying to paper. That will produce a more thoroughly mixed colour. But I'm not going for those colours
??? Watercolor magic occurs when mixing them on the bloody paper. So we are all here curious about how comes that you are curious about him doing that. SMH. 🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
The only DS colours I have are from the six essentials set so from series 2 I only got fr ultramarine and quin rose :p I love them a lot! (I don't remember if the cool yellow from the set is series 2, but new gamboge definitely is series 1)
Like with how the watercolors are processed and produced and the source of pigments. Denise Soden has an eco-friendly watercolor palette in collaboration with Da Vinci :)
Are these paints cheaper than Windser and newton? I want to start colouring but I can't find many brands in Australia. I went to buy Windsor and Newton, and one tube was $35. 😩 Have to find something more adorable
Price really depends on the country you're buying from. I suggest checking out Jackson's Art watercolour. They are really value for money. They also have free global shipping when you reach a certain amount (not sure how much though). www.jacksonsart.com/jackson-s-artist-watercolour-sets?___store=jacksonsart_en&acc=c9f0f895fb98ab9159f51fd0297e236d
currently, here is my palette: PY154, PR209, PB15:3 and PB15:1... seems like the only series 2 color that I use is Quin Coral (PR209)... Daniel Smith doesnt have PY154 for some reason and both blue is pthalo colors, PB15:3 is Manganese Blue Hue and PB15:1 is Pthalo Blue Red Shade, so they are both in series 1. it turn out that I'm using some pretty economic paint without knowing it.. XD
Looks can be deceiving. This paper is actually not very good for wet on wet. Paint will not move much. I have the paper tilted in this video that’s why the paint was able to flow a bit better. I’m using this paper because it’s whiter and colours appear vibrant, which makes it a good paper for creating colour swatches.
Thanks for these price-aware demos. So many reviewers ignore price, which is important to so many viewers.
I love isoindoline yellow. It waters down to a soft peach. It's beautiful.
Super idea to including the small alternative colour swatches.
I know it's kinda off topic but do anyone know of a good website to watch new series online ?
I really like these videos about which colors you would choose from each series of Daniel Smith colors, very informative :)
That quinacridone coral makes for a nice flamingo bird colours FYI 😁

Again, thank you so much for doing all the mixes, this really helps me. I especially love the purple mixes.
I think this is one of my favorite videos.. so much information. You've definitely helped me build my custom 12 color DS palette!
Series 2 have some of my favorites.
Now I finally understand why it's called "Burgundy Yellow Ochre." I saw on your tube the Ochre comes from Burgundy, France.
I'm a sucker for my burnt siennas 😩 I'm also dying for the Cerulean Blue/Quin Rose mix.
Might have to consider buying these.

So much great info! Thank you.
Thank you for showing how the Cerulean Blue Chromium mixes. I will have to try this paint.
Thanks Teoh. I’m in the process of buying my first Daniel Smith WC and this helps a lot
Yay! So glad you were able to do this video. Not sure if lots of people asked but I really wanted it :). This is super helpful :)

Very helpful. The color suggestions are nice and cost effective. 👍 😃 Thanks Teoh.

Re-visiting this video since im planning on saving up for some Daniel Smiths! Great review and vid

The sap green and the French ultramarine are so beautiful 😍

You can check out Jackson's Art UK. They have rather good prices and reasonable shipping cost
This has been super helpful!
Thank You for this. I bought the winsor and newton cotman field box but would like to replace the colors as soon as they're empty.
Nice! Thanks!

I could really use some advise with a Daniel Smith color Palate for painting landscapes and village scenes while in Tuscany. I would love some help.
I love your videos and voice thank YOU
Thank you for the information. I bought the burgundy yellow ochre and was kind of disappointed in it. I guess for landscape it's good though.
Love the colors
Hey, have you tried the genuine hematite? Is it worth it as a black, and, how many of these are good to use straight of the tube VS filled in pans?
Hi, Teoh ! Please check the line-jitter when u will be doing huion 16 review :)
Not sure about the chrome thing. But it doesn't really affect anything. That part is going to get dirty anyway with use.
These colours are making me hungry 😂
Thank you so much for another great video Teoh!

Pyrrole Orange is one of my palette staples.
Pyrrole Orange or Transparent Pyrrole Orange?
The granulation is really interesting
I'm curious as to why you mix the colors on paper instead of in a palette for a better blend of the two. Thanks.
I like to see the colours used to create the mixture. You can of course mix in palette first before applying to paper. That will produce a more thoroughly mixed colour. But I'm not going for those colours
👍🏻 got it. Thanks. I’m a curious learner 😀

Drumaier J because I felt like it.
I like how they granulate when mixed. However, I find the selection very confusing
The only DS colours I have are from the six essentials set so from series 2 I only got fr ultramarine and quin rose :p I love them a lot! (I don't remember if the cool yellow from the set is series 2, but new gamboge definitely is series 1)
The cool yellow from that set is Hansa Yellow Light
This made me create my own palette from cheaper series of other watercolor brands. How about an eco-friendly watercolor palette?
What do you mean by eco-friendly?
Like with how the watercolors are processed and produced and the source of pigments. Denise Soden has an eco-friendly watercolor palette in collaboration with Da Vinci :)
It says the series 1 video is unavailable?
Yay - first like! Hey Teoh🙋🏻
Are these paints cheaper than Windser and newton? I want to start colouring but I can't find many brands in Australia. I went to buy Windsor and Newton, and one tube was $35. 😩 Have to find something more adorable

Hmm i like the palet
Good!
What paper you using here please?
Daler Rowney Aquafine. student grade paper.
@@teohyc thanks Teoh... That looks like really good paper, for student paper! I like the way the paint moves in the water on the paper surface.
@@teohyc ahh! I normally use Arches but for practice paper, I'd probably use the Daler Rowney one you have here now... Thanks for the heads up Teoh 👍
Arches is way better than Daler Rowney. I only use this paper for colour swatches, mixing, testing colours.
