I like overwold encounters. The world feels much more real and alive. You can see the pokemon move around in the wild rather than imagining that they exist when all you see is just grass.

in the safari zone you can stand in the grass and change the direction you face, you don't move you just change orientation by tapping the different direction buttons, it allows for encounters and doesn't count towards your steps taken

I have mixed feelings on the encounter thing. I absolutely agree that it can be a lot more fun to see the Pokémon pop up and the shiny reveal is so much more amazing. But I also like overworld spawns. It's also nice to feel like I have a bit more control over when I have to go into battle. There were some routes where walking through them is pain, caves in particular. I don't imagine this can help you now, but you can hunt in the safari zone by turning your character. If I recall, this doesn't use up your steps but you can encounter Pokémon this way.
Yes you can. That said. As a horribly colorblind person, I need the damn sparkles to see Shiny pokemon OTL. I'm sure you've missed dozens by now because I can't tell the difference in the overworld
@robliw ah okay, I didn't even realize Tangela was in the safari zone in yellow lol. I played that game a lot as a kid, but the safari zone was always a drag so I never really did much other than the story requirements 😅
Overworld Encounters are genuinely the worst thing Gamefreak ever did to the series. It literally takes away the challenge & mystery of what you're about to battle when you can just walk up to it. Even aside from all the gimmicks they've been shoving in since Gen 6 (which were all completely unnecessary) it's just another example of them wanting to make the games even easier than they technically already are. I'm convinced Gamefreak think children are getting stupider. Ngl, they probably are, but they shouldn't be encouraging it with these literal baby-games.

Each area of the safari zone has its own 1% encounter, Tangela is a 4% encounter rate in the area where Chansey is a 1% so it wouldn't count
