Great analysis. We've got the ingredients in Johnson, Laulu and Redmond, Halton and Tarber to handle the interior for Venables' scheme. Then imagine the LB and Edge talent surrounding that. Awesome.
All Im going to say is when we go against a good passing team coach V better not fall back to that prevent defense with all the Corners 10 yards off of the Wide receiver
Brent Venables is the reason the OU defense was great back in the day. Mike stoops took credit for it but as soon as venables left, the defense suffered big time
Bob Stoops brought the “Zone Blitz” to OU in 1999 - which is what is being explained in this video. When Mike Stoops returned to OU after getting fired at Arizona, he didn’t run the Zone Blitz. I am hopeful that BV brings back that aggression and strategy back. The TWO keys to being successful with the Zone Blitz is having the right kind of athletes and the SMARTS of those same players.
Awesome breakdown, thanks a lot. But thanks to Mike Stoops, us Sooners no longer use word multiple when talking defense. Just a heads up. #FUMS #fuTBOW

@@mmmmcolbert8787 That makes sense when you're playing Texas Tech and have a talent gap wider than the Grand Canyon. Scheme starts mattering more when you play teams as talented as you are. Like I said, it's not like stunts and twists are just useless, or that they're always the right thing to do, they're just a couple tools in a DC's toolbox that he shouldn't be overly committed to or afraid to use when the other team neutralizes their usual approach Edit: I think an example would be useful. In the SB Aaron Donald was schemed out of the game early on and the Rams adjusted by overloading one side of the line and also playing the 'games' you're referring to in order to disrupt the blocking assignments and give him one-on-ones. It worked Edit 2: The problem with stunting for OU was that it while it can screw up blocking and make it easier to get home when you've been struggling to, it also takes a little more time. If your secondary play is horrible and the QB can find an open receiver moments after the snap, it's not that good of an idea and any half decent OC will exploit it
Going to take OU a couple years but I feel they are in way better hands. Love seeing defensive juggernaut teams and I have a feeling OU will become that. Which they’ll need in the SEC. Now do the offense. 🤔
@@terrelldavis7308 well they better if they want to compete in the SEC. If not it’ll be fun to watch them turn into another Auburn then have my tide roll them every year.
0:57 No, I don't believe Ted Roof is calling the defense. 🤔 Thought I heard Venables basically say that he would in one of his interviews.. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong on that.
I’m not convinced OU has the horses in 2022 to run this defense successfully. But as long as they are fundamentally sound and know their assignments, they have a chance to be better than last year. The reality though is that we all need to temper expectations. It’s not gonna be an immediate top 10 defense that looks as good as Clemson. It’s gonna be hit and Miss, with some games looking great and some games being a struggle. 2023 is the year where I expect a big jump in defensive play.
He may have the schemes and the looks but will BV be able to pass the whiff test and get the right guys. I don’t see a large swath of five star recruits flocking to OU.
5 star recruits are VASTLY overrated most of the time. If you don't have proper structure and coaching, 5 stars become a sort of locker room cancer. They KNOW they're good (have been told so their whole lives) and often times they become very lackadaisical (see Bookie Radley Hiles). Some of the greatest TEAMS in history were full of 3-4 star guys (non blue chipers in the old ratings). Give me a team full of vicious Dawgs that are relentless over a team full of supremely athletic guys with large egos.
Great OU vs OSU game I am glad we won. However, this is the University of Oklahoma we expect to put out a quality product with a great level of consistency. Having said that, VB now needs a QB coach that can develop. Booth coaches are never champion level coaches otherwise coach VB would have spent most of his career in a booth. High level coaches coach from ground level with their players, the wont to see what the player see and coach them up. Coaching tempo lost or change within the game, otherwise meeting the players where they are. These player deserve better they have done everything ask of them. Not what a coach wants to see from a over head view. "The players on the field don't have this view!!!!" Next come Confidence and momentum.change you need to be on the field to get back when its lost I say coach VB let these guys stay in the booth pay them as analyst and hire a new DC and AC that can coach at ground level.
You do a great job but, your videos would be a bit better if you leave the field a full screen and not dropping back and forth explaining what is happening.
