    Your piston rings are dry from sitting years so that engine has very little compression. Take spark plugs out and add a few drops of oil. Spin engine over with plugs out to spread oil around. should help with compression. Also change out points.

    • @ethanross5919
      @ethanross5919 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      And then he could pull it around the yard in gear so he doesnt burn out his new starter.

    • @patmancrowley8509
      @patmancrowley8509 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      With the spark plugs out turn the engine over with a heavy duty drill so that they system will pump the oil through the internal ports to prevent a dry start-up. And like the guy indicated, lubricate the top of the cylinder with some oil so that the cylinder walls get lubricated to prevent scratching.

    • @joshlee7909

      Good point if it rolls over that easy it might be low on compression it might not even start you if you get it to fire

    Am really enjoying this. It a stroll down memory lane for me. At age 15 I bought a 47 CJ2A in simulator condition. That was 55 years ago. One of the first things we did was ditch the 6 volt system for 12 volt using the 6 volt starter is fine. Not that hard to do. You will be much happier.

    Josh I had a 1950 and 1956 Willy's and I ended up putting an electronic fuel pump after I changed everything to 12volt. Made it much nicer starting in the cold weather. I picked up the pump at advanced Auto parts but that was about 15 yrs ago. Good luck with it. You will get if figured out everything was simple back then!

    I worked at an auto garage as a teenager and early 20's. We sent starters and alternators out for rebuild.
    They always came back "totally rebuilt." If it came back like yours, the garage owner would send it back.
    Paint was often on the terminals. We just cleaned it off.

    I have a butter churn like that and yes I have used it. We churned butter with one when I was a kid. (hated it!) Once I had some cream I needed to churn so I put the jar in my cooler for my drive to Texas to visit my dad. When I got there the bouncing around in the car had already churned it for me!! Just a hint for multi-tasking!

    love the jeep. I have to say you cant put a value on memories you talked about running around the farm as a kid on that jeep with your dad. that's something that can never be forgotten and if you restore it and you have kids you can do the same thing with your dad and your kids and hopefully pass it onto them. so to answer your question for you YES!!! the jeep is worth fixing up over any 68 bronco or anything else. family and memories over anything!!

      No need to do a 12V if you don't have to. Restoration means keeping it stock, and if the engine turns and fires then it will work as advertised. Engine turns by hand, should fire on 1st attempt once everything is adjusted as it should be.

    When you're checking for spark with your spark plug make sure it's not sitting on a rubber radiator hose it won't give you any spark if you insulate it... if push comes to shove you can unplug the positive side off of your starter and around a full 12 volts to it shouldn't hurt the starter though being as old as it is you never know you take the positive off of the starter so it doesn't feed the rest of the system with 12 volts only the starter.

    Get the Pertronix, no points, no dwell, HUGE diff in start and run. Oh like others said, ground plug to test spark. Of course I would convert to 12vdc. Resistor for coil, unplug lights/pull fuse. That's it, rest can be done later.

    I think with restorations it's often a case of it being a labour of love rather than the project making financial good sense. Sometimes though it's good to compromise and decide on getting a project to a stage where it isn't concourse, or even strictly speaking a restoration rather than getting it back to a basic functioning vehicle that perhaps be then kept for possibly taking it further or maybe selling to someone else as an ongoing project. Totally agree with you over the starter rebuild, basically anything less than a complete remanufacture with new consumable parts is a substandard service.

  • @Joe6packAmerican
    @Joe6packAmerican 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I'm sure I'm late to the party here but when you're looking for spark at the plug, you have to ground the plug. A better way to check just for spark is sticking a phillips screw driver in the spark plug wire connector and holding it close to metal on the engine, the spark will jump the gap.
    The engine really isn't spinning fast enough for a 30 year first start. I'd look into changing it over to a 12 volt system.

    When an engine hasn’t been turned over in quite some time, i usually use about an ounce of Marvin’s mystery oil in each cylinder and let soak for 24 -48hrs (before turning over). Don’t want to bust the rings on a potentially rusted cylinder wall

    On a vehicle that has been sitting for as long as your jeep, the basics are, new plugs, wires, points, cap , condenser, oil and filter change. Ground to the frame. Confirm spark before you start pouring anything into the carb. It's a great project, but you need to start with the basics. Good luck

    Awesome series, thanks for sharing. Jealous of your wood stove heated shop.
    Try switching polarity, most 6v systems are positive ground. Check for an electronic ignition kit, usually have cheap convert kits available to replace old style points condenser. Might be a good time to convert the whole jeep to 12v. The starter can handle 12v but the coil would likely fry. Get a 12v electronic ignition kit and your laughing. Also A cheap spark tester tool is well worth the money. The plug needs to be grounded out on metal to test for spark, but I think you knew that...

    Josh,
    Replace all ignition parts, set the point gap, use a matchbook thickness as a (rough) gauge if you don't have feeler gauges and check for spark...Ground the spark plug to the block, you'll never get a spark plug to spark on top of a rubber radiator hose...lol
    Make sure there is no oil on the new points contact set, or they will burn (pit) prematurely. A touch of cam lube on the distributor cam wiper is a good idea as well. You got this!

    That canister on top of the engine is the oil filter.

    Yep. My grandmother had 4 of those. I’m sure my mom has them stored away someplace.

    Get an 8 volt battery. The spak plug has to be grounded to get a spark. Get a visual spark plug tester. You will use it a lot on your projects. Good luck.

    If you don't put a dust cover over the openings in the starter housing where the brushes are the starter is not going to last no time. Dirt and grit will get in there and eat up the commutator. If you don't have one make one with a small piece of sheet metal.

      Cool I wonder if they sell a sleeve to go on it...electrical tape certainly isn't the answer in my mind

    Put the positive lead closer to the starter, then connect the small lead in behind the holding nut & washer, you will get better contact on the positive side

    You have to ground the spark plug when you check it for spark. Take your wire brush and clean off a place where you get good ground

    Josh, my Cub Cadet 108 starter/generator is 12 volt, but the shop rebuilt it completely for $120.00 They had another price point about $30.00 more to upgrade the replacement bushings. Ed

    Spark plugs need to be grounded to check for spark. You need to replace the cap, rotor, points and condenser. Plugs and wires wouldn't hurt either. Get the battery load tested, to make sure that it is holding charge.

    I'd get a Jacobs electronic ignition for it. Costs a bit,but you'll be amazed how easy it starts,hot,cold or REALLY cold.

    I've enjoyed this jeep and bronco series and am anxious as you are to see this jeep turn over. As far as input whether you should bother with it or scrap it, you spoke about the wonderful childhood memories you had riding around in it with your dad. He won't be around one day and you may regret not giving it a chance to restore whether completely or partially. My advice is restore both and pass them along to your kids and if they are old enough have them work on them with you. That way they will remember their dad and cherish it as they are adults. Completely restore the bronco as they are worth more but just spend enough money on the jeep to ride around your property with and get the mechanical systems working. Just my 2 cents there. Good luck.

    Everyone has told you to ground the spark plug so that one is covered. You need to take some fine emery paper and clean up those points. Then check for spark.
