Just to let you know, Insider vastly misrepresented the reality. While they aren't factually wrong, they aren't giving you a bigger picture. Sure, to build more batteries, Solar Panels and wind turbines we need more metals. Thats a fact.
However what the didn't mention is that overall mining will actually decrease. So sure, we'll increase our metal consumption by 3 Gigaton's, but decrease our Fossil Fuel related mining by 18 Gigaton's. That seems like a good tradeoff, especially since mining for fossil fuels have substantially higher risk than most metals associated with renewable technology.
Moreover, companies like Redwood Materials have achieved a >95% resource recovery rate at scale when recycling batteries (from consumables to EVs). What's better, is that they've done that while achieving profitability and a cheaper end product (than sourcing the materials from a mine.
Insider, like usual is being a biased news source when it regards the sustainability realm. But I guess thats not surprising given its ties to the automotive industry (excluding Tesla) and oil/gas industry. Not to mention its ties to Qatar.
      Hope it helps

While I don't particularly disagre, I would contend that that's simply not possible nowadays. Society is and has been in a state of advanced ecological overshoot (for an excellent introduction to overshoot see William Catton’s classic, "Overshoot") for some time now.
Overshoot means that even at current global average (inadequate) material standards, the human population is consuming even replenishable and self-producing resources faster than ecosystems can regenerate and is producing entropic waste in excess of the ecosphere’s assimilative capacity.
In short, humanity has already exceeded the long-term human carrying capacity of the earth through our use of fossil fuels and fossil fuel derived synthetic fertilizers. While thoroughly decimating the viability of "living off the land" as wildlife populations continue to dwindle, edible forage is replaced by increasingly sterile monoculture, and climatic shifts continue to disrupt the natural hydrological cycle on a global and regional level.
Synthetic chemical pollution, plastic/microplastic pollution, extreme heat and humidity, and epidemic disease were just the final nails in this coffin.
Ultimately, I'm confident in saying that there won't be a return to Monke, there will be a return to non-existance though as Mother Nature (the awfully lax disciplinarian) finally deems human and livestock population 'correction' to be in order.
Something that will likely play out in the latter half of this century.

Not only is it better for the environment, but it's SO NICE. Imagine going somewhere and not worrying about parking! I live in a rural area, so it's not an option for me, but my university has it and it's wonderful.

To me, its foolish to think that this is anything of a solution to the metals problem. This is just as finite a resource as any other metal being that it takes millions of years for the nodules to reform. The answer is sitting right in front of us: better recycling of the metals we do have. Think up new and more feasible ways to take the scraps we all leave behind and rejuvinate them to an earlier form. This is just shameful logic on the mining company's part.

THIS!!! Solar panels and wind turbines should not be our main source of energy. They are great in many cases but obviously it is unsustainable to power the whole world with them. But often times people don't even mention nuclear power as an option when talking about alternative green energy sources because it's so taboo and the public is so naive and mislead when it comes to this topic. Very sad when the solution is right in our faces and many people just ignore it.

The amount energy needed for this would pollute the earth 100x more than just mining here .Let's not even mention the specialised equipment that we'd need for this that dosent exist .It would cost us trillions of dollars just to get resources the same resources we have on earth, meaning economies would break down and prices would go up.
