I like that Kermode mentions that it's "painterly" because that's the word I always use to describe this movie. The gorgeous cinematography, the music, the acting; it does feel like watching a moving, very violent Renaissance painting. And I agree about Mary running to Jesus being the best scene.
Overall, I have mixed feelings about The Passion, but what it does well, it does very well, and it seems to be quite popular with Christian audiences, which I suppose is what matters.

Does anyone know where I can find Mel Gibson: God's Lethal Weapon? I remember it being one of Kermode's better documentaries, with interviews from William Peter Blatty and Christopher Hitchens among others.

I always laugh at people saying that it is the most violent or gory-est movie ever made. There are some pretty nasty movies out there. Schindler's List is one of them. Gibson took a historical approach to the violence and suffering of the time. As a roman catholic I always thought of biblical films as assinine representations of what actually went on. The film is not called the sermon or the wedding at Kana it is called "The Passion" and deals with the suffering of a Jewish man who was set up by some of his own people for death and torture at the hands of a vicious occupying military empire for political reasons. The film came out a few years after the controversy surrounding a group of Canadian soldiers who tortured a 16 year old Somali boy to death and the same year American military personel were implicated in the Abu Ghraib prisoner tortures. It is not a perfect film and reflects some of its director's idiosyncracies, certainly. It also suffers from having too many slow motion sequences and shots. But it is a strange and multifaceted piece of cinema.

André Raymond What did you think about the Recut Version? I've seen both versions and thought that the R Rated Cut had a few scenes that felt unneeded, gratuitous, and excessive. And even though the Recut Version was slightly toned down, and removed the most graphic scenes, it was still mostly the same and very intense.

    Is this from 2013?

No, it's from 2005. One of the very first wittertainment podcasts.

DavidGruwez badhead is the best resource for early Kermode/Mayo reviews. They didn't start doing podcasts at all until March 2005. That's why I've never been able to hear the legendary Sex Lives of the Potato Men rant. If you really dig, though, you can find some older recordings of Kermode on Radio 1 or with Mark Radcliffe in the 1990s.

The film’s acting, direction, visuals & reality is acclaiming & very good, however the film’s writing, excessive graphic violence & lengthy pacing is unnecessary & dull. (60%) (3/5 stars) (mixed)

Mark Gibson is a great director. The passion is an impressive film. Prometheus sucks and Batman V Superman was fun.

It's beautifully shot, very well acted and impactful. But.... you'd need to be the Son of God or Superman to withstand even the first bout of beating Jesus suffers through in this film. There certainly wouldn't be any chance of dragging a wooden cross anywhere. He'd be dead 10 mins into/after the Roman flogging. He was more holes than flesh after that.

It's possibly the greatest, most honest - albeit brutal retelling of Jesus Christ there is on film. No one wants to even analyze the film for its editing, writing, music, cinematography, etc and in all of these area, The Passion is incredible. It's a crime that the masonic organization known as the Academy of Arts and Sciences refused to recognize this masterpiece at the Oscars that year. BUT what can you expect from a Luciferian organization?
Of course, agenda-driven movies like Swindler's List and 12 Years a Slave get a pass for being so violent. But Mel gives us the most historically accurate account of what it meant to be punished under Roman law and just because it's a Jesus film, everyone treats such violence as unnecessary. BUT like the violence in 12 Years, it is absolutely necessary. Maybe more necessary to watch.
Let's just say that Mel was not wrong about who runs Hollywood.

@@LukeLovesRose It's possible to admire The Passion of the Christ for its artistry, and Gibson for his craftsmanship (I do), without falling into ridiculous antisemitic conspiracy theories.
As I recall, this movie was nominated for three Oscars, so it's not like it was even ignored by the Academy. I do think it should've won for Cinematography at least, but a lot of deserving movies have lost at the Oscars. Doesn't mean there's some kind of stupid conspiracy against the movie or its creators.
