  • This is the full recording of the excitedly anticipated conversation between Dr. Cuthbert Simpkins, author of Coltrane: A Biography, Archbishop Franzo Wayne King, Mother Marina King and Rev. Wanika Stephens, founding members of the Coltrane Church, and Pir Zia Inayat Khan, grandson of Hazrat Inayat Khan, on the intersection of John Coltrane’s work and the themes espoused by Hazrat Inayat Khan in his classic The Mysticism of Sound & Music.
Christianity, Islam, and Hinduism are believed to have influenced Coltrane and other jazz musicians of his time. In this dialogue, we will hear more about Coltrane’s spiritual influences and in particular how The Mysticism of Sound may have inspired his work.
This event coincides with the Shambhala Publications re-printing of The Mysticism of Sound & Music, with a foreword by Pir Zia.

This was an amazing video for me as a Sufi, a poet, a Jazz musician, and as a Phd. in Literary Theory and Cultural History. I discovered Hazhrat Inayat Khan in the 70's through his book on The Mysticism of Sound and Music, and I immediately related his teachings to the work of John Coltrane, Pharoah Sanders, Lonnie Liston Smith's Cosmic Echoes, and that whole cadre of people in Jazz who were either Muslim, or just on a Spiritual quest through their music, like The Mahavishnu Orchestra, Don Cherry, Retrun To Forever etc. Yes the Spirit lives on in these two sainted men, I truly believe this.

Years ago, I worked for Reggie Workman's sister. He was one of Coltrane's bass players. Met him only once, but he made a great impression on me. All the people I met from the Coltrane circle...well, it's hard to describe. Maybe what I would say is that they had a kind of "aura" of "glowing love" around them. Hard to describe in words...but there definitely was something there...
